Freda stopped on hearing her daughter's voice from her room. She was obviously making a call. Out of curiousity, she stopped to eavesdrop.

'oh honey, thats not it! I'm very sorry i've been rejecting your calls, so many things on my mind.... Oh Choudhary! How could you say that? You know you're the only man for me, you know how much i truly love you and how much i want to keep being by your side... Nothing's going to change. You have absolutely nothing to worry about dear... No i havent gotten the chance to speak to her. You know she's an extremely busy woman, one of the most important women of our community, i told you the last time she's a Chief. So she's always busy.... My mum would never object to me marrying a white guy as far as i love him so dont worry... Mia's alright... No she isnt home... Alright dear, talk to you later... I love you too Choudhary, angel of my soul' And with that she stopped talking, Freda knew she had ended the call.

She felt anger well up in her. The marriage was in three days and yet Shivani was fooling around with a useless and no-good white guy.

She placed her hand on the knob wanting to barge in and knock some senses into her daughter but she restrained. She thought of a better way to go about it.

Aha!

She opened the door gently to see her daughter unclasping her bra obviously wanting to take a shower.

'ouch!' Shivani exclaimed when she noticed someone was in the room. She quickly reached for a red blouse on the bed and wore it, letting out a sigh of relief seeing it was her mum 'mum! You should have knocked'

'so sorry dear' Freda took calculative steps towards her daughter. She really wanted to look sad, noticeably sad.

'mum, whats wrong? You look sad'

She sat on the bed and wiped the fake tear that had fallen off her eyes 'its nothing'

Shivani grimaced. Was her mum crying? No. Her mum was a strong woman and she rarely cried.

'dont tell me its nothing mum' She sat on the bed besides her mum, her voice laced with worry and concern 'something's eatin' you up mum. What is the matter?'

'its nothing' her mum said again.

'mum...'

'its just that i oveheard your conversation over the phone with...with your Choudhary' She looked at her daughter scanning her face for any reaction 'i can tell you really love him. I dont know what to do seeing the fact that its him you want to spend the rest of your life with. I cannot deny my daughter the happiness she deserves. I cannot force you to marry Dike if you dont want to. Its just that, i feel and i know Dike's best for you my child' She touched her daughter's chin affectionately.

Shivani looked down at her laps toying with her fingers 'mum' was all she could mutter.

'its just that...its not as if i'm sad that you're going againt my instructions. Its just that...well i know, you're grown up now and you're old enough to make your own decisions and i have little or nothing to do about it. Its just that, i've always fantasied being the Igwe's mother-inlaw, thats, when Dike becomes king. I wasnt born in royalty. I was born in a home where we could hardly feed. And it was through hardwork that i was able to attain this great heights today. I've never wanted any of my children to suffer the way i had to suffer. To go through the pains of poverty. I've always wanted my children to be royalty. I've never wanted them to be trampled upon. I've always wanted them respected in the whole community Shiv, that was why i wanted you to marry him in the first place. But its obvious you're in love with someone else. What can i do? My only duty as a mother is to support you in whatever choice you make, just that....' She sniffed.

Shivani felt her heart tear apart. She had never had her mother speak to her in such a sad tone before. Heck. She had never seen her mother that sad before. To the extent, she was speaking and shedding tears.
Tears began to well up in her own eyes as well.

Her mum continued 'i just hope this Choudhary guy is worth it, really. I just hope he deserves your love. Whats his name? I mean, his full name...'

'Choudhary Juman' she said in what sounded like a whisper. She looked at her mother and saw her force a smile.

'daughter, so...so you cant do this for me?'

'mum, its not as if...'

'shhhh...' her mother said placing an index finger on her lips 'dont worry i understand. But it will give me utmost joy if you'll just make me the proudest mother on earth by marrying Dike'

A tear dropped from her eyes. She has always wanted her mother proud of her.

'please do this for me daughter, please. There's nothing that Choudhary guy would give to you that Dike would not. He's a very good man and you'll like him. You'll even grow to love him and you'll be very happy dear'

Shivani closed her eyes and made her decision. Her mother was everything to her. She was going to have to call Choudhary back. She was breaking up with him.

'i'll marry him mum'

Meanwhile, outside the door, Mia's car keys fell from her hands.

Shivani sobbed 'Choudhary, i'm so sorry. But..things cant work out between us anymore, i've very sorry. I'm getting married in three days'

'what?! Shiv, what da Bleep is wrong with you? How can you do this to me?' His voice was shaky.

'i'm very sorry believe me. I never planned for this to happen. It was just too sudden. I'm very sorry, please find a place in your heart to forgive me. I dont think i would be coming back anymore,' She sobbed harder 'pardon me Choudhary. You'll find someone better'

'Shiv, dont do this to me. I cant live without you!'

'i cant too. But i've got no choice. Perhaps we were never destined to be together after all. I'm very sorry'

'i'm sorry Choudhary'

She heard him sniff and she couldnt take it anymore. She quickly hung up.

'what the hell do you think you're doing Shivani Obianuju Oke?'

Shivani spun around to see Mia standing by the door with bloodshot eyes. She matched towards her in fury.

'what do you think you're doing now Shivani? What?!' Mia practically screamed.

Shivani remained silent.

'i never thought you'd be so cowardly sis. You've allowed mother manipulate you for the umpteenth time Uju, what is wrong with you?! What?! What?! What?!'

She folded her legs and brought it to her chest, then rested her head on her knees.

'for how long are you going to allow mother control your life?! For how fucking long? How long are you going to continue being her puppet Shivani? How could you do this to Choudhary?'

Shivani sobbed.

'i've spoken to that guy over the phone several times and he has good intentions for you. He loves you Shiv, how dare you repay him in this manner? This man is ready to do anything for you. Anything! Just so you're happy. But you're going to toss him aside because of a useless man you dont even know? Do you even know how that man treats his wives? Have you ever had one of them complain to you? I bet you havent, because if you have, you would have known where you putting your legs into' Mia blew out hot air from her mouth, sweating profusely. She just felt like eating her sister up. How dare she do this to her? How dare she try to take away what she desired the most?
Shivani had stolen everything from her. A mother's love. A mother's understanding. A mother's warmth. Heck, even when their dad was alive, he practically adored Shivani more. Everyone seemed like Shivani more than herself. Everyone felt she was better off. Everyone wanted the best for her, but she? She didnt deserve the best. What did she ever do to God? Hadnt she any right to be happy too? Didnt she deserve happiness?

She had never held anything against Shivani for the way her parents favoured her more. Because Shiv was such a wonderful soul. One that was so hard to hate. She loved Shivani so much too and she was ready to give her everything.
But this...this was way above limits. She loved and practically worshipped the ground Dike Ikemba walked on. He might not have noticed her but she did love him more than every other thing in the entire world!

She didnt care that he treated his other wives like trash. She didnt care at all. What she cared about and what she wanted was to be his wife.

Umuzulu had seven clans; Abamno, Bidemiri, Casarom, Dekele, Ekanma, Filimiri and Gozzam clans.

And every four-five years, a wife was picked from each clan for the crown prince.

The first wife, Adanna who had been her classmate and friend even till now was from Abamno clan. Adanna had been married to Dike when she was just nine. Then everyone had been envious of her, being the crown princess.
Mia had always hoped they'd choose her as the second. But Benita beat her to it. Benita being from Bidemiri clan. Then Chinemerem, fondly known as Chinny was chosen being from Casarom clan. Then Dora. She couldnt remember the names of the other two wives for she didnt know them personally.
But this year was the turn of Gozzam clan. And she had hoped and had hoped and prayed that she'd been the chosen one. But as usual, Shivani stole it from her again.

It was never happening this time. She was never giving up on what belongs to her this time around. Shivani wouldnt steal what belongs to her anymore, never!

'Mia?' She heard her sister call softly.

She turned to her with so much anger and hatred in her heart 'what is it?'
Her sisters eyes were bloody red and she could tell already that her sister was plagued with guilt.

'am i doing the wrong thing Mia? Am i doing the wrong thing by trying to make mama proud?' Shivani sobbed.

Somehow seeing her sister this disturbed tugged at her heart. But she was past caring. She couldnt continue being soft. She had been soft all this while and that was why Shiv had stolen everything from her.

'you want a honest answer? You're doing the wrong thing. Like, the wrongest thing in the entire world! Infact, just deal with it! Its your life. Remote control!' She eyed her sister and dashed out immediately.

'have you seen the girl Dike would be marrying?' Chinny asked as she chopped the onions. They were expecting the Lolo that day so they all had to prepare something.

'no' Dora said 'how does she look like?'

'she's a completely sophisticated human. Omo! If you see the girl eh! I saw her and Mia at a shopping complex, was it, two days ago? The girl's hot. Abroad just dey shine for her body' Chinny said and giggled.

'dont worry, by the time Dike gives her a does or two of his madness, her freshness would turn into something else' Benita said as she pounded the yam with ferocity with the pestle.

Edna and Flora had gone to the shopping mall to get some drinks for the Lolo's visit, so it was just Dora, Adanna, Chinny and Benita in the kitchen.

'i saw what he did to Adanna couple of days ago when this his friend was around. Frankly babe, you should have been lucky he didnt pour the hot peppersoup on you. So much for being a goodwife' Chinny said with a snort.

'oya Chinny, stop that' Dora chided. Chinny could be mischievous at times.

'but seriously i felt sorry for her. You needed to see the way she was running around the kitchen to hurriedly prepare the peppersoup for him, jumping up and down the kitchen like a frog' Chinny continued.

Adanna only sent a glance her way. Then continued with what she was doing, whistling her favourite tune.

Dora chuckled 'you really do not want to provoke Ada now, wouldnt you?'

'she shouldnt get angry because i'm saying the truth nah!' Then she started laughing again 'but seriously, when i remember that day, i feel like laughing by ass out! I dont know whether to tell Adanna good for her or something. I was actually begging her for a taste of that nice-smelling peppersoup but she refused. And after every every, Dike rejected it. I was just watching from my window, it was a very funny one'

'tell me something' Dora said 'where was i that time?'

'you were out to see your bobo nah'

'this Chinny eh. She can talk!' Benita said with a small laugh 'cho cho cho cho cho, you no dey tire?'

'talking is for the living jhor!' Chinny hissed with a pout.

'the Adanna you're even laughing at is even ignoring you' Benita said again.

'eh, its because she knows i'm saying the truth nah. Truth is bitter. Its high time we began to understand that in this marriage, we are meant to suffer. There's no backing out oo. No one can get on Dike's good side except our darling Dora here'

Adanna increased the tone of her whistling, obviously trying to shut Chinny's voice out.

'i would never waste my time trying to please Dike, never! It will never happen again. Imagine, he has never even touched any of us since he married us. Or has he tasted your apple Dora?' she asked unashamedly.

Adanna stopped whistling and hit the sink impatiently 'whats your problem Chinny? Cant you give your mouth a break for once?'

Chinny chuckled 'finally she talks. Well, i cant give my mouth a break. Thats why it doesnt smell'

Dora and Benita erupted in laughter. Everyone knew Adanna sort of had a mild mouth odor, mild though. You wouldnt know when standing away from her, but when you go close, its very easy to perceive.

Adanna eyed her in embarrassment 'shey you know you're just looking for my trouble and i'm tolerating you? Because when i'll start eh...'

'ahn ahn, sorry now. I didnt mean any harm oo. Infact i was not even reffering to you sef. I dont know why yeye Dora and yeye Benita were busy laughing upandan. What i meant was, when you open your mouth and speak, it wont smell' Chinny shrugged with a smile.

Benita stopped pounding and rested her head on the pestle laughing her head out. Chinny was always fun to be with. Her loud and sharp mouth would go about yabbing everyone she came in contact with in a way you wont be able to get angry. It was no wonder why Dike hated her so much.

'are you all going to continue laughing like inbred idiots or concentrate on the food you're preparing?' Everyone froze on Dike's harsh tone as he entered the kitchen.

Adanna and Benita tried to put on a smile, Dora continued with the okra she was slicing while Chinny continued grinning.

'sorry oo, we didnt know our laughter was disturbing you oo. But sorry oo Dike, dont you think laughing would ease the ugly wrinkles you've had on your forehead recently? Everytime you keep on carrying your face like its the heaviest thing you carry, ease up a little nah!' Chinny grinned.

'oh God! This girl and her sharpmouth!' Dora whispered to Benita.

'i wonder what Dike would say to her now' Benita whispered back.

'would you get back to what you're doing you foolish animal?!' Dike barked hoarsely 'dont you dare say a word to me today, you hear?'

'you should know by now that i cant do without talking sir Dick'

At this point Benita and Dora, even Adanna couldnt help but laugh.

'what did you call me?'

'Dick...i mean, Dike, Dik, for short, Dick, you know...'

Dike eyed her and left shaking his head.

They laughed again.
