Tradition...

'you know you've been really carrying your face so hard throughout this evening' Dora said after the Lolo had left.

As usual she had come to lecture them on how they should take care of their new cowife who was coming in three days, and as usual scold them for not taking good care of her son or making the house clean.

'it is about what Chinny said today? You should know her by now, she's isnt scared of you' She playfully pinched the stubble on his chin.

'Chinny's the least of my problem right now Dora' He sipped from his glass of scotch 'she's just a fool, inborn. She's been a fool right from birth'

'now that was harsh'

'maybe' He shrugged 'mum said they'd be setting a meeting between myself and the new wife-to-be. I really dont want to see her, i dont want to marry her but mum's sworn to do something drastic to herself if i dont meet her' He sighed heavily 'i'm so confused. You know i dont care too much about my dad. But i care so much about my mum. And she's really taking advantage of that' He complained.

'Dike, permit me to say this. But you've been through the first, then the second, third, fourth, fifth, and the sixth, its just one remaining for everything to be completely over, why are you struggling?'

'you really dont understand at all Dora. I dont want to be king'

'its your birth right Dike' She sat comfortably opposite him as Flora walked past, an envious look in her eyes 'whether you like it or not, its your birthright to rule Umuzulu. I dont know why you're fighting it. Do you know how many people would die to be in this position?'

'those who are ready to die for this position could as well take it, i dont care really'

'Dike, dont say that. Even if you dont want to rule, at least do this for Lolo. Do you know its the pride of every mother to see her son rule? Everyone wants her son to be a great and renowned person you know'

'i run a business worth hundreds of millions Dora'

'thats way out of it Dike and you know it'

'i know' He slapped his forehead tiredly 'i dont wanna rule'

She squeezed his palms 'you've got to. And you have me by my side. I'll always be there for you'

'that doesnt change my mind though. But i'll see what i can do. Meanwhile, i'll have to retire to bed. I'm fucking sleepy'

'goodnightie'

'you too' He picked his glass and left.

***

Freda stopped in front of the door just before knocking. She was hearing her daughter speak over the phone.

'Choudhary, you've gat to stop calling me. I belong to someone else now' She heard her sniffle

Exactly my fear. The way red ashes ended drained me of all the excitement I had reading the story, right now I'm reading this one with caution.

Freda gripped the door knob tightly. She just hoped this Choudhary guy wont destroy her plans.

'Choudhary i belong to someone else now...' Freda pushed the door open immediately, walked to where Shivani sat in front of the mirror and snatched the phone from her hands.

'hello Choudhary, you listen and listen very carefully'

'mum...'

'stop calling my daughter's line. As said earlier, she belongs to someone else. If you ever think of pestering her again, i'll make sure you're arrested for stalking over there, watch and see, rubbish!' She quickly ended the call and threw the phone on the bed staring at her crying daughter.
'for goodness sakes Shivani, whats wrong with you? Why do you keep speaking to this guy? I thought you've agreed to marry Dike?!'

'i know i've agreed to marry Dike mum. But that doesnt change the fact that i actually love Choudhary. I love him so much. And we actually had plans of getting married. I cant help but feel i'm...'

'betraying him?' Freda scoffed 'so you actually want to betray your mother and please him? Is that what you want Shivani?'

'no mum, thats not i want, just...'

'you know what Shivani? I'm tired. I'm tired of trying to convince. You're 25. Its your life. You can do whatever you want now. You feel Choudhary is good for you, excellent! You feel your mother wont decieve you and that Dike is perfect you, still excellent. You're torn between two choice now daughter. But be reminded, if you choose Choudhary over Dike, then i'll never really forgive you, never!' She stomped out of the room in anger.

Shivani sobbed. She never really liked seeing her mother this way. Looking disappointed and angry. But what could she do? She loved Choudhary.

'if you really love him, then call him and tell him you love him'

She looked back to see Mia standing by the door, hands akimbo. That was when she realised she had actually voiced out the thought. She looked away guiltily. Her sister wasnt exactly happy with her. And it didnt make her feel better. All her life, she had always wanted the people she cared so much about happy. She'd do anything to please them. Just to put smiles on their faces.

She had Mia's footsteps coming closer 'Shivani, i never knew you to be this cowardly. And i'm telling you now Shiv that if you choose Dike, then i'm never going to forgive you for what you did to Choudhary'

Shivani froze.

'it'll only tell me that one day you'll be forced to kill me or someone else because you want to please mother someday' Mia ran a hand through her weave 'what are you thinking? What exactly is going through your mind right now? I expect you to be more matured. Infact, when mum first told me about the fact that she wanted you to marry Dike, i laughed within me because i knew, or rather, i thought deep down you werent going to pay heed to her. But now that i think of it, i think she has you wrapped around her little finger! Whatever happened to please yourself first before pleasing other people?'

'mother has gone through alot for us Mia!' Shivani spoke fiercely as she turned to her sister 'i've had enough of you. Yes, i know i'm hurting Choudhary. But mum means the whole world to me more than Choudhary. I knew mum before i knew him. I love mum even more than i'll ever think of loving him. And if sacrificing Choudhary would make mum happy then i'll readily do it over and over again without batting an eyelid, do you understand?'

The look on Mia's face showed she was taken aback but Shivani didnt care. She had hardened her heart now. She was doing this for her mother, no one else.

She looked at the three dresses she had spread on the bed 'maybe this is the time where your opinion becomes important sister. Which dress do you think is better? Because i'm meeting with Dike today' She looked at Mia.

The look on Mia's face was as though she wanted to kill her. It was as if her eyes were capable of shooting her dead that instant. Shivani felt bad. She had never seen her sister that angry before.

'you might as well tie a buba to the meeting place, nonsense!' Mia hissed and walked out of the room.

Shivani took a deep breath and stared at the dresses. A peach sequence jumpsuit with silver linings around the waist. A green moderate length gown with a sleeve that stopped at her elbow, body hug and it always brought out her figure. She remembered Choudhary presenting this to her as a gift on Valentines day. Tears welled in her eyes.

The door of her room opened and Mia burst in immediately, almost as if she was panting.

'whats the problem?' she asked concernedly.

'i have a better solution to all of this sis' Mia panted 'it just struck me now'

'alright' Shiv listened.

'lemme get married to Dike in your place'

'huh?'

'since mum wants one of her daughters getting married to Dike, i'd readily do that. For you. Not for her. So you can be happy and live with a man who truly loves you and who you
