On recommendations, I mixed and matched 2 academic and 2 non-academic. For my successful school, it will surprise everyone that I used 1 academic and 2 non-academic. It was the first app I submitted and at that point, I had no feedback on my request from my 2nd academic which was supposed to be my strongest recommender. I guess God works in mysterious ways. I am totally grateful!!! My prayers for scholastica16 and the rest of us waiting. Good news must surely come!

That recommender must be from your UK school, perhaps your MSc supervisor. Can one ever get letters of recommendation from UK lecturers in good time?

This Lecturers can be so selfish at times, a friend recently ask his graduate Supervisor (MS) to do a reference letter for him, deadline was approaching with many calls and text message, somehow this Man refuse to write a reference letter for him. I had to advice him to cancel the request a day to application deadline and look for someone else to do it. He has gotten his admission with or without him, some people think they are God.

Hmm...Sometimes, developing a very good rapport makes such request for recommendation easy. However, some lecturers are ever busy and tend to forget. Disappointments from people we think are in the best position to help are just one of those features of life. The bottom line is we should give thanks to God that he got the admission.

abeg don't massage this lecturers ego....some of these lecturers want you to ass-lick them before they can do you any favours...when I wanted to apply for masters,I went to my HOD..he said I didn't call him at all since I left school,why should I ask him for reference?... ..so all students should be calling their lecturers abi....when I was in school, did he dash me mark or what?......some of these lecturers want to be pampered before writing reference letter...thank God I saw someone else,that did it..this person even only taught me once in school....these lecturers should take it easy

I had a similar experience.
I was interviewed by a potential supervisor at Michigan tech for my PhD in Chemistry. Everything was set, just 3 letters of recommendation and one must come from my undergrad supervisor; she had already done the online evaluation but they needed a letter. The two other lecturers already wrote their letters without informing me but my supervisor started giving me excuses. She told me to write the letter and email her so that she would just put it on the letter head paper. After a month, mama no gree do am o. She said no letterhead, no light, internet and all sorts of excuses. So, I rapidly completed my other 2 MSc applications and got admitted. Mama still no gree do the recommendation till today, lol. It even got to a time she told me to stop calling her again. Here I am, it is exactly a year this thing happened, lol. I was so sad mama fall hand gan.
Most Nigerian lecturers think they are god,lol. Although we have few good ones, atleast I still chat with some of them on whatsapp.

It's the God complex syndrome. I'm an applicant for the Commonwealth shared scholarship scheme. I notified my hod early enough, since September last year precisely. Despite the fact that I personally gave him a prepared reference format, he couldn't provide. He couldn't even give me the paper I gave him. He later promised that he'll send it via email. He later stopped picking my calls, probably because he felt that I was disturbing him. I am still waiting for his reply till this day.

I think its the way we are conditioned to act in naija. If you are compassionate and understanding and free, you will be regarded as soft, etc.

Sebi one of the reasons why baba was voted in was because he was perceived as a hard boiled general who didn't listen.

The country has a long way to go.

May be hard to get through to them. But when you eventually do and they agree, the letters are sent with speed of light. Unlike the Naija counterpart that you need to buy goat for, call and beg for eternity.

Good day Mr Olu, I have been following this thread for about 8-9 months now. The last advice i got from this thread pertaining to informing my UG project supervisor about my graduate plans has been of enormous help to me. Presently, i do not only work with him as an UG-research assistant but also get invited to some of his MS lectures. My current profile goes thus;

Bs : Economics and Statistics
cgpa: 4.1/5.0 (after 7 semesters, my final semester just commenced)
proposed degree: Phd
Experience: UG research assistant
proposed Area of specialty: Econometrics, Quantitative Economics
GRE: work in progress
TOEFL: work in progress
proposed schools;
UNIVERSITY of Texas, Dallas
Binghamton University, NY
University of Houston, Texas.

I would really love to know if these aforementioned schools suit my profile/field. Also, i would'nt mind if you or any other person could as well help recommend some schools too. Thanks.

there are quite a few people on the whats app group for students that are eager to come to LSU. Others that wont come to LSU have also asked me to add them and I have been able to give valuable advice on funding. Also, I did my master and undergraduate in London so I can give anyone who is looking to go to school there valuable advice too and I can also tell you what uni to go to and put you in contact with some people. You can email me on kisha_baby@hotmail.de and email me your number so I can add you to the wats app group. I am here to help. And people are getting this funding thing wrong.When you are doing a masters the possibility of getting funding is close to none. But there are other ways that I will discuss when you contact me.
I see people have made use of my idea to do a whats app group but did not get scolded by the person who created this thread. If you do not see me messaging again then you know andraeze has blocked me off this thing.
Anyway, any more questions regarding universities in the UK or here or funding then let me know.

Naah. You missed the point. Creating that whatsApp group to address funding opportunities etc. will take people away from NL which is essentially why this thread was created. You can use your whatsApp to contact those in LSU so that you all can meet up, but when you want to discuss gaining admission and funding into LSU or schools in US in general then here is where you need to make such posts and address such enquiries.

I find it very difficult to understand, in fact inscrutable, why you cannot give these information to everyone on the thread. Everyone wants to hear about how to get funding. From your post, you need people's phone number and email. At first, it was for LSU. Then you encompassed the whole south of USA.

Now, you have lived in Germany for 22 years. And also have information for studying in UK and Germany. Please madam, drop the hidden agenda attitude,prove me wrong and give us all the information pertaining to USA on this thread.

You can always do the German and UK advert on their respective thread. Please do not derail our dear thread.
