There's nothing quite like the sound of a finely-tuned engine. When you hear a strange sound coming from under the hood, you may panic. A knocking sound can be worrisome – here's what it might mean and what you should do to fix it.

Knocking in your engine, also described as pinging, can be related to one of several problems. Some may be easily fixed while others may indicate major damage. The knocking sound often occurs when the fuel and air mixture is incorrect, which causes the fuel to burn in uneven pockets rather than uniform bursts. Left untreated, it can cause damage to the piston and cylinder wall.

Causes of Engine Knock

Low octane rating

If you put in fuel with an octane rating too low for your vehicle, it can create a knock. To prevent this, use petrol with an octane rating at or above what the manufacturer recommends. An octane booster, which can be bought at an auto parts store, can help restore the correct octane rating and stop the knocking.

Carbon deposits

Fuels for vehicles are required to have a carbon cleaning detergent, but they may not prevent carbon deposits from forming. This reduces the amount of volume inside the cylinder and increases the amount of compression. Using a fuel additive can usually cure this problem.

Incorrect spark plugs

If any spark plugs other than those recommended by the manufacturer are used, they can cause the knocking sound you hear. The spark plug has a certain heat range, which means it withdraws heat from the combustion chamber. Using the wrong part can prevent it from working correctly.

Deep knocking

If the sound is a deep, loud knock, it indicates that your rod bearings are worn out. Pretty soon, the bearings will fail, which means your car will likely break down and leave you stranded. If you hear such a noise, contact a certified mobile mechanic from YourMechanic for a diagnosis.

I feel using the wrong engine oil can also damage your engine. I advice using recommended oil rating and not listen to the mechanics that tell you Nigeria is too hot.
We have oils blended in the EU on our site www.mrparts.ng

How can you be checking the properties of gas in Nigeria.

In one word... poor maintenance.

My 2011 nissan murano suddenly start given a knocking sound... I gave the car to a mechanic to service then. Suddenly they brought back a faulty engine back to me. I was advice to get a new engine. Mind you this faulty engine is just 54000 mileage.

So confused of what to do right now.

The number one cause for engine knock in Toyota Camry and Corolla is the engine oil getting dried up. Users of this car brands should always check their oil level. Unlike other cars the oil gets burnt out as you drive the car.

Most reasons I know are not here, boss.

1. Overheating: Starving the engine of coolant/water. \I have personally lost 2 engines to this.

2. Poor lubrication - Inadequate or no engine oil. The next thing na 'kakakakakakaka' you go dey hear o. Na engine funeral be that

3. 'Over-revving' - When you like toying with the red-zone of your car's RPM. Many Kazeems will not own up - You know how they love to 'raise' (rev) cars especially when they are done working on it. inexperienced Kazeem go just say, 'Oga, that your car, na engine dey do am o'. Gbege don shele be that.

To prevent ENGINE KNOCK, always look at your dash board for unusually lit indicator light.

Car Engine knocks very fast when you;

1. Drive at high temperature for too long without knowing. This is caused by leaky radiator, forgetting to return the radiator cover after filling with water or checking, bad water pump, bad radiator fan, etc.

2. Drive at high speed with very low or near-empty oil level.

3. Drive with bad oil pump.

If you drive your car without engine oil it can also cause the engine to knock

Oftentimes a nut might be losely tied thus causing engine oil to leak out. Now if you are unaware of such issue and continue driving the car with that leakage one day might be on the road or sum other place your car would just knockout.

It is pertinent to note that if you are the type of driver who fails to check your engine and gearbox guage every morning you are bound to have this problem one day.

Engine oil shortage and lack of water / coolant knocks an engine faster than any of the other reasons you posted there. Most people don't check their coolant or oil gauge regularly. Every morning, that's the first thing I do before starting the car.

I do not feel the type of oil matters, even if you use Mobil 1 or Toyota oil 5w 30, the oil will still get short with time. I have used different Corolla and Camry models same issues.By the way which Total are you using?

My engine already has the knocking sound. People have advised me that I have to replace the engine. It works but not totally perfect. My car is always below 1,it vibrates but when it goes above one, it stops. It dries up oil and the fuel dries up soooo fast. It brings out smoke too. What can I do?

So you have no idea some unscrupulous auto mechanics can swap your perfect functioning engine with a faulty one?

Good reason why its best to go for your car repairs only when you have time to wait till its done or better still send a trusted friend to go wait on your behalf.

Bad roads can cause engine knock. Wierd but true. I found this out first hand this January.
I drove over a presumed shallow pot hole only to be surprised it was very deep. The impact created a resonance which caused the crankshaft and engine block shift from allignment. This resulted in the crankshaft not turning properly thereby creating a knocking sound. I had to replace the engine block and the wounded crankshaft.
