What job prospects can a bunch of uneducated kids with no skills have. The state needs to figure out to do with these millions of children. You can't be a career begger.

It is noteworthy that Northern leaders are beginning to speak up about some of the ills in their society. Almajiri is a feudal creation that was not always part of Hausa culture until the Sokoto jihad subjugated the kingdoms and created theocratic emirates.

Three key policies that the governors can agree to introduce jointly which I feel could help in the medium to long term are:

1) Ban on admission of children who are below 16yrs into quranic only schools.

2) Introduction of free and compulsory education from Basic 1-9.

3) Institution of a board of islamic scholars/clerics/traditional rulers to set doctrine and influence the eradication of antisocial philosophies emanating from worship centers.

If they can pull these through and if there's enough political will to back it up, the Northwest can still pull back from the brink and cure itself of the twin ills of ballooning population of out of school kids and religious nut heads.
