noncy21: -You need a shampoo (without sulfates and silicones) -You might need a clarifying shampoo (you can also use a black soap) IF you have low porosity hair -You need a conditioner IF you have high porosity hair -you need a leave in conditioner -and oils. The type of oils you need depends on your hair porosity If your hair is moisturised properly then it should be soft and easy to detangle If there's something you don't understand, you are free to ask 2 Likes |

RealJaneDoe: The thing is I don't live in Nigeria and when I checked the price of the products I use in Naira I almost got a heart attack lol BUT I searched for some Nigerian bloggers on the internet and some of them were using Topklass, which is waaaaaaaaaay cheaper since it's a Nigerian product. I think you should try them, it seems to be working for them And I'm not sure but I think it will be cheaper if you buy it offline instead of jumia. As you can see both said the bought it for 350 Naira but it's 800 sth Naira on jumia 2 Likes

RealJaneDoe: I wasn't sure about the kind of conditioner you need. Topklass only has a normal conditioner for deep conditioning but I found a botanicals leave in conditioner. This might also be cheaper offline 2 Likes

Hajeeyah: It's dry because although high porosity hair accepts moisture pretty well, it loses its just as fast. -You can pre poo and detangle with coconut oil or olive oil before washing, so the shampoo won't make your hair super dry. -Wash only twice a week -If your hair gets dry before two weeks is over co wash, which is washing your hair only with conditioner OR you spray some water on your hair and seal with an oil and leave in conditioner -Deep condition (you can use the topklass conditioner) -USE a leave in conditioner (e.g botanicals) -Do the LOC method -Oils and butter like shea butter, olive oil, coconut oil will really help soften the hair -Use a silk scarf or bonnet at night. Imagine moisturising properly just to rub it off on your pillow, not cool. The silk helps trap the moisture in 3 Likes |

Low porosity hair Low porosity hair has very tight cuticles and is prone to build ups so: -Use a clarifying shampoo ONCE A MONTH or every 6 weeks/ or you can just use the African black soap (dudu osun, cut a bit and let it melt inside a bottle of water so it will be liquid) -Shampoo every week (gentle shampoo, no silicones and sulfates -Deep condition with INDIRECT heat. By using heat your cuticle layers will lift so moisture will be able to get into your hair (Use indirect heat covering your hair with a shower cap, then wrapping it with a silk scarf in order to create heat. Do that for at least 30 mins before washing off. -After deep conditioning use a hair milk or light leave in conditioner -Avoid heavy styling products because they contribute to build up. -Don't use heavy oils because they just sit on top of your hair and aren't fully absorbed beyond the cuticle layer. So AVOID coconut oil, castor oil and olive oil etc and use lighter oils such as apricot kernel oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil etc -You can either use cream or oil to lock in the moisture or use both - If you use both then the cream comes BEFORE the oil -Do the LCO/LO/LC method to moisturise. L= liquid/water C= cream/leave in conditioner/hair milk O= oil The method shows the order on how the products should be applied. 3 Likes

High porosity hair Having high porosity hair means your hair absorbs moisture very easily BUT loses it just as fast because your cuticle is raised. You have to: -Deep condition every time after washing. This is very important -Wash your hair every second week because high porosity hair is very dry and is not that prone to build up -Avoid heat. This is very important for every natural hair but more important for high porosity hair because it might lead to dryness, so wash your hair with lau warm water or cold water. NEVER with hot and stay away from flat iron etc -Detangle frequently because your hair is more prone to tangles. Just rub your fingers with a little oil to remove any tangle -Protein treatments are very important because it helps to strengthen your hair and minimises breakage, since your hair is more prone to breakage. -Use heavier/creamier products(conditioners etc) and oils like (shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil etc) to moisturise you hair -Do the LOC method to moisturise L=liquid/water O=Oil C=cream/conditioner (leave in) The LCO method states the order on how the products should be applied, 6 Likes 2 Shares

NosoChic: Instead of pinning the sides down, you can twist it Instead of leave the back hair just like that, you can make a bun 3rd pic : you can also part it in the midle and do big flat twists on each side 4th pic: Or you just part it TILL the middle, make two high buns in front, leaving the back 1 Like

Medium porosity hair Since this is the perfect balance of high and low porosity hair all you have to do is: - Use lightweight products/ or oils (jojoba oil, aloe vera butter, sunflower oil etc) to moisturise your hair -->to avoid build ups -doesn't matter if you do the LOC/ LCO method L=liquid/water O=Oil C=cream/conditioner (leave in) Or L=liquid/water C=cream/conditioner (leave in) O=oil

Re: Embracing The Beauty Of Your Natural Hair by Nobody: 2:36pm On Apr 10, 2017 |
NosoChic: Lol..no not shea butter alone. You have to condition too. You moisturise depending on your hair porosity. -wash, -moisturise according to your porosity -style (e.g twists but NOT too tight, bantu knots, rolling with rollers etc) -wear a shower cap for at least 30 mins to create indirect heat so products will sink in -finally let your hair air dry. -when taking the twists/Bantu knots down, make sure you are gentle and your fingers are 'oiled' first less frizz If it gets rough during the week, spray with water and seal with an oil/a leave in conditioner You can use any product, as long as it works for you. Just make sure your hair is very moisturised, that's the key. Try it out, you'll be surprised. Any product works as long as it moisturises the hair properly 2 Likes |

Natural hair dictionary Porosity: describes how the hair absorbs moisture. Your hair can be high / medium / low in porosity. Pre poo: necessary before shampooing. You do this by using an oil (which is chosen according to your hair porosity) to finger detangle and massage into your scalp. This helps minimising breakage and stripping of your scalp's natural oil. After detangling, wear a shower cap and let it sit for at least 15-30 mins for the oil to penetrate every strand. Detangling: removing the tangles and knots of your hair. This is achieved by using your fingers or a WIDE tooth comb (if it's not wide, you are going to pull all your hair out). The best and easiest way to detangle is by serperating your hair into 4 sections and then carefully using your fingers to remove the knots Shampooing: washing your hair with a shampoo. Make sure it's your scalp that you concentrate on because that's where the build ups are. It's your scalp that has to be clean. Dividing into four sections helps the hair not to tangle when washing. Once a week for low porosity hair and medium porosity hair . Every second week for high porosity hair. Clarifying shampoo: Only for those with low porosity hair. It's used once a month to clarify the scalp because low porosity hair is prone to more build ups. Co washing: Washing with a conditioner instead of a shampoo. Beneficial for those with high porosity hair . Since people with hair porosity hair shampoo every 2nd week, you can co wash in between those weeks. Note: Everybody's hair is different so 'listen' to your hair. If you find out that shamppoing your hair every 2nd week makes it feel dry then shampoo every 3rd week or once a month but co wash in between Deep conditioning : Extremely important! Helps moisturise the hair, soften it and strengthen it. It's done after washing. Apply a conditioner (which is chosen according to your hair porosity) to every strand of your hair (you apply just as you would apply a relaxer). Wear a shower cap and let it sit for 30 mins before washing it away. If your hair is low in porosity , you have to deep condition with INDIRECT heat. After conditioner is applied, wear a shower cap, put a warm towel on it and wear another shower cap so the conditioner will be able to penetrate every hair stand (since the cuticles of low porosity hair are closed, it's very difficult for moisture to get in) Proteins: Proteins in conditioners are very good for high porosity hair because they help lock in moisture. Medium porosity hair should avoid not using too much though. Too much moisture causes hair strands to weaken, which causes breakage. So it's best when you just use a conditioner that contains protein once a month Low porosity hair should avoid proteins because it makes their hair bristle or straw like Sealants: are e.g Leave in conditioners, hair milk and oils. They seal in moisture and should be applied when the hair is DAMP (not soaking wet & not dry) and after washing your deep conditioner off Moisture: = Water. So make sure the first ingredient of every hair product you buy is Aqua/H20/Water LOC Method: For high porosity and medium porosity hair LCO Method: For low porosity and medium porosity hair LC Method : For low porosity hair LO Method : For low porosity hair L= Liquid (you can keep in a spray bottle and mix with a leave in conditioner/hair milk) C= Cream/Leave in conditioner/hair milk O= Oils (use oils according to your hair porosity ) Protective styles: help protect the hair from harsch weather and breakage, also helps grow the hair e.g braids, twists, bantu knots etc. A protective style should be removed after 4 weeks to 6 weeks so you can take care of your natural hair. If you don't build ups will occur which can lead to breakage Big chop: Cutting all relaxed/heat damaged hair off Transitioning: Phase of letting your natural hair grow out and gradually cutting the relaxed ends off Trimming: Should be done if you notice your ends are getting thinner 3 Likes

Wow I love this thread.space booked for ma petite & I Godbless you for starting this thread ma'am @ lovelygurl, big weldone First question pls I didn't see any post concerning using hair moisturizers like pink oil etc or is it not necessary? Thanks |
Re: Embracing The Beauty Of Your Natural Hair by Nobody: 6:23am On Apr 23, 2017 |
tatacherie: Awww thanks The problem with pink oils is that they contain mineral oil. Mineral oils block the hair follicles, making the scalp dirty, which can lead to the hair not growing as fast as it ought to 2 Likes |
