jarkbauer:BIG LIE! The fine for bypassing is N50,000 and the Discos invite the Police to arrest a perpetrator if they want to deal with you. Only very few people bypass and it must be done with the connivance of a DISCO staff like hotel owners. Those who bypass are those without prepaid meters. You realise that if without meter you spend N5k a month with meter your expenditure will reduce to N3k |

BlowBack:The problem is the discos They hate prepaid metres I have never heard of anyone whose bill went up after being liberated from estimated bill to prepaid metering We are told that normally a monopoly either determines price or quantity, but not both Under estimated bills, discos determine both quantity and price. Bills will still if people don't enjoy light Discos know their revenue will fall should everybody be metered They want sky-high tariff approved by government before prepaid metres go round Fashola can speak for himself; he is a SAN But I think the discos are TOO powerful and have become arrogant - Fashola cannot control them Although I believe that Fashola want tariff that will kill most small people |

BetaThings:The logic of granting seperate concessions to GENCOs, TRANSCOs and DISCOs was to eliminate monopoly and abuse. But as things stand out now the DISCOs are the ones corrupting the whole system. While the GENCOs are plagued by lack of spare parts, funds and gas or lowering water levels, the TRANSCOs are also suffering from an old outdated grid system that will require huge investments. But what are the constraints facing the DISCOs? They hardly maintain transformers or power line cables and will quickly pass the buck to the affected community by demanding money is contributed. The seemingly lack of pre-paid meters and a very weak regulatory system in place is what the DISCOs are using to extort Nigerians. I think it is high time they consider collapsing the tri-chotonomy in place of regional or state power companies. The DISCOs dont invest in power generation or transmission and are just out to extort. |

Lanretoye: The DisCos were allocated a total of 75,021mw within the period but they accepted 65,729mwIn a month, 3,000 x 30 will give 90,000MW |

thecommunist:their is a contract in place before the privatization of Nepa that is taking care of that issue already and generation is never stopped it is continuous. that is where the percentage sharing comes into play which takes care of the load each disco get. the percenatge take care of the capacity of the discos |

The report is incorrect and I believe that the OP need to reconfirm the figures and measure from the source. There is no country in Africa that generates 75,000MW not to even suggest that distributors will reject 10,000MW! I will rather assume that the original report must have been about 7,500MW with rejection of 1,000MW which will still be ludicrous as we don't generate up to this yet. Or more believably, I'd assume the OP meant 75,000MWh rather than 75,000MW which is a completely different proposition and lot more believable. This said, I will comment that the supposed privatisation of the unbundled power companies by the GEJ administration was wrong and that the beneficiaries of these GENCOs and DISCOs are unqualified technically and lack the financial capacity to turn around these companies. The DISCOs have only remained cash cows for the new owners who are all PDP faithfuls/cronies and past Nigerian leaders with influence. Not one of the 6 DISCOS was sold to a real power concern with existing profile to handle turn around of the magnitude required to make a miracle of our power sector as we did when we brought MTN and Econet into our Telecoms sector. |

ifeanyi317:power generating stations can shut down part or all of thier generating plant. it happened more than twice when i was there. you see, there are times that the national grid can be so oversaturated that some GENCOS will be called by NERC to shut down some of their turbines. |

BlowBack:lol bypassing is easy, but it's not worth it. if caught here in Abuja you can pay as high as #200k my neighbor's prepaid meter was stuck by a thunder lighting I guess and the thing brain loose control. it will be reading and when it reads down to 0 units, the light will not troop off. |

kjhova:Thank God that the privatisation of telecoms happened under OBJ. If it had been done by Jonathan he would have messed that up too the same way he messed up the sale to discos. At least d telecoms privatisation under OBJ is more stable than Jonathan's power privatisation. |
