5 Reasons Why Men Commit Suicide Than Women In Nigeria-from A Female Perspective by onismate: 8:37am On Apr 14, 2017
Few days ago we entertained a female visitor in our house. While discussing on the increase rate of suicides, crimes and kidnappings in Nigeria. According to her, the suicide rate would still go up if care is not taken because the Nigerian environment, economic woes.
Years before, it’s hard to hear that a Nigerian committed suicide, but things has drastically changed. We hear of so many attempted suicide cases. People taking their lives due to depression. Our female guest was able to buttress some points why Men are prone to committing suicide than women in Nigeria.

Now here are 5 points why the suicide rate is more in men than women in Nigerian society. Note, this is from a female perspective and her own opinion.

Societal Pressure on Men: Society has so much put pressure on men that when they can’t meet up with demands they become depressed and consider suicide as an option. They won’t want to face the shame. Imagine where society assumes that the man has to provide for his family, wife, children. He also has extended families too. Work pressure is on him, and some other pressures. If he couldn’t take care of his families, society term him “lazy,” condemn him for not being able to take care of his family. Women will condemn him more. So men are on pressure to meet up expectations. When they can’t they become depressed and so men will harbor negative thoughts, some consider suicide as options.

They Empower The women and leave the men: We have so many women empowerment programs by the Government and other organizations, while the men are left out. They empower the women and leave the men. The society made it in a way that most times women are being favoured in some cases because they are the weaker sex. They see the men as strong without knowing what men pass through.

Society have forced the men to accept some responsibilities they can’t handle: There are so many responsibilities the society has placed on men. Society made it that men shouldn’t cry, they shouldn’t be seen as lazy and weak. The men will be habouring pain, pressure and don’t know how to express it. When they cry society will mock and condemn them for crying. Men shouldn’t be seen crying. For God’s sake we all are human beings and have emotions.
According to research, women tends to live longer than men. Societal responsibilities on men are much more which will make men commit suicide if they can’t meet up.

Economic meltdown: The economic hardship in Nigeria is not helping matters. Many men are on pressure to succeed, get married, have the good things of life. It’s easier for the women because what some of them believe is that there would be a man somewhere waiting to marry them, or take care of their needs. The men hustle so hard to make life better for themselves and people around them.

Situation/Depression: So many people are depressed. Anyone can face depression but in the current Nigerian system, men are the most committing suicide. The pressure falls more on them.
From the words of our lady visitor, I was able to put the above 5 points why it seems the men commit suicide than women in Nigeria

The worst of it all is the pressure to succeed. Imagine you running into an old school mate only to discover that he is made while you are still hustling!!

Being a male in Nigeria is not a day's job!!

God help us!

Let me blow your mind... all of those things you read about the Colonel that started KFC are not REALLY true. Most of them are just speculations.

You can ask google.

To think that he was broke and all of a sudden started KFC is a total lie. So please research before you conclude.

I know that no time is late to become successful... but how many people can have such perseverance without giving up? smiley

The main reason men commit suicide more is because men might be physically tough, but not psychologically/emotionally tough.

Emotional rigidity comes in handy at some point, if we were to talk about societal pressure_ all the single women that are constantly reminded of menopause, wives of community horsebands, the DILs that are steadily harassed by MIL, women that have been tagged barren, victims of rape and molestation, etc... would have all committed suicide. 'But you rarely hear of that, highest they cry, pray and hope for the best.

*Most men will watch their wives give birth and become unstable for months, but the woman that passed through it, will be warming up for second round after few months.
*A widow would naturally hold on better than a widower, the worst problem she might face is finance, but under 2mths...most widowers are already looking for another wife.
*How many men can live with the fact that their wife be steady collecting another dick? Compare it with the number of women enduring and praying for community horsebands.

My dear, no be by muscle, there is strength in lots of women. When a woman's beloveth kids are involved, the strength becomes double. Women naturally hold on longer...a woman would most times think of the effect, her actions would have on her kids, friends and family.

Suicide rate is higher amongst men worldwide than women.

Women usually only attempt suicide.

They don't "just do it" √

It all has to do with the methods.

Men are more action oriented and use more lethal quicker- acting means/ methods to take their lives, like using firearms while women use gentler methods like poisoning/ overdosing on medicines. They'll also probably let someone find them, and they are rushed to the hospital.
Another factor determuning the choice of suicide method is Women are concerned with appearances and possibly don't want to be found dead with their throat slit or their brains splattered on the ground. They'll rather be found dead 'peacefully sleeping' on their beds.

Funny enough, women suffer more from psychiatric conditions associated with suicidal thoughts, and do have suicidal thoughts more than men.

Another reason is that men are more impulsive than women, alcohol abuse (commoner in men) also increases impulsivity. Some impulsive decision to commit suicide is carried through before they've even had time to think of the implications.
Like I said earlier, they just do it√.

I agree with the posters above me. Men may appear tough, look tough but sincerely they aren't as emotionally tough as women.

Women cry out their pains, they scream out their frustration and pray out their pains. Men on the other hand always want to appear cool and tough but die within.

Men get depressed and frustrated when things don't go their way, they feel like lesser men in the process.
Meanwhile women endure and overcome much more challenges.

I admire women so much each time I reflect on my mom and I hope every woman realise the deep inner strength in them.

Let me say that a man will most likely outlive the age of Methuselah if he has a woman that always have his back irrespective of the situation or the dynamics of life.... (of course, he can't pay her in the opposite coin).

Statistics has shown that the vast majority of men who commit suicide are either married or in relationship with a woman.

Also gay men and single men rarely commit suicide.

Deductively, the major cause of suicide among men are the women in their lives and not those written up there

So basically women are more resilient and stronger than men.
We are not selfish, we always take into consideration the things and people that matter.

minus the manhood and money, Men really feel less and like they have nothing to offer the world or anyone
This is the summary nne. OP is only trying to sugar coat it... grin

OP would have done well to back up his/her assertion about suicide rates among men with facts and figures (and also that of women),only then we can conclude if the OP's assertion is true.

Until then, this post is driven by sentiment.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree with the OP as regards to the challenges we face as men.
