That's right, safety should be the operative word when shopping for a tyre. Things to lookout for is the date of manufacture, tread wear number, temperature resistance, speed symbol, maximum load capacity and traction.

The date of the manufacture is important for the buyer to determine its expiry date, which is normally four or five years depending on the brand. The manufacturing date is represented by four figures on the side wall of the tyre. The first two digits indicate the week of the year while the last two digits stand for the year. Tread wear number indicates the tyre’s wear rate. The higher the tread wear number is, the longer it should take for the tread to wear down. For example, a tyre graded 400 should last twice longer than a tyre graded 200. The temperature resistance, which is represented by letters “A,” “B “or “C,”indicates a tyre’s resistance to heat. Letter “A” is suitable for hot climate. Letter “B’ is meant for normal weather areas and while “C” is for cold areas. M+S is used to indicate that a tyre is suitable for mud and snowy terrains. It is popular in Nigeria and the SON said that it is appropriate for the Nigerian roads.

What are the most popular or needed tyre types in Nigeria?

I believe CoC by SONCAP is a good wya to determine, whether a tyre is safe and suitable to Nigerian roads.

You could also check for prices of several brands of tyres such as Maxxis, Archilles that are good for Nigerian road. To make tyres last, we need the right pressure in the tyre always, proper wheel alignment and balancing.

I recently bought a brand new tire double king size 205/70/R15 goes for #10,500 while 215/70/R15 goes for #11,000.
A transporter using toyota picnic says the tire is durable he uses his car for carrying heavy loads and recommended it.

I don't know about SUVs but I am currently using MAXXIS P205/65 R15 for like 18months now and I've never had it flat for even a day.
I bought the 4 tires during the Lagos int'l trade fair of Nov '11 @12k each.
The most important thing is to buy your tires from the genuine importer with warranty
. So many fakes out there.

I went with "it is not about where the product was made but the quality I will derieve from it and over all the tire has not given me any course for concern"

The only complaint I can say is the side walls of the tire is too thin compared to savero or maxxis that I have at the back

MAXIS is Chinese,
I don't understand your argument here.
Maxxis is currently a global company with presence in the US, EU, Australia, Thailand, SA, etc. The ones I buy however are made in Thailand.
I had retired the first 4 sets I used on the saloon after two years, and bought another four early this year, the tire rocks with pride.

Funny enough, this last week, I picked up another four set, P225/70 R16 for my SUV because it has been tested and trusted.
Caveat: I only buy from the companys' rep in Nigeria because I heard that some dealers are bringing in replicas from China.

As an automobile repair practitioner, I will suggest you dont go for brands, just lookout for the tyres suitable for Nigerian roads. For your Suv which brand and model is not stated, Buy any tyre with a V speed rating. Even Starfire, Innoson or Appollo, as long as they are V, then they are suitable for Nigeria. Michelin and Pirelli comes with all season tyres and reduced speed capability. The issue on burst tyres on our roads is mostly caused by fitting tyres that are not suitable for Nigerian roads. The Kogi State Governor's road accident was caused by a burst tyre and when a car gets to a certain speed and the tyre does not support that speed, it either melts or burst while on motion. Most Brands of Mercedes and BMW are fitted with Y, Z or ZR and you will find out that these tyres are not even sold here in Nigeria. My Jeep has W speed rating and they are tokunbo tyres and date of manufacture is 2011. I rather buy used tyres than buy new substandard tyres.

I live around Agege where do you think i can get very good Tokunbo tyre size P225/70R16?

Dude, How did you come up with that ranking u just pulled it up?. U guys never cease to amaze me. When u buy a tire, check the manufacture date, tires more than 6 years old are a safety hazard.

Go for high profile/quality tires as listed above by Chynx. I use Bridgestone (japan 2013 manufactured) two yrs now and there is not yet a scratch on the tires even after going Lagos - Enugu severally. my other car came in new with Michelin (made in USA) it is still very sound and smooth even after going 52k miles. these tires are sold in Lagos trade fair tires section.... they range between N32K to N45K and their life span is more than 8yrs. In fact, my Honda pilot owners' manual in page 498, under Tire service life (as shown in the attached pix) specifically recommended that, and I quote, "all tires, including the spare, be removed from service after 10 YEARS from the date of manufacture, regardless of their condition or state of wear"
This is supposed to be the worst case safety scenario..... Then at times I wonder who actually set the life span of tires in Nigeria to 4yrs, when even the manufacturers did not state so, or do we refer to those "China" tires for this 4yr life span?

Please @KA24DETT, cecegorz --- etc pls assist clarify why u change your tires every two or four years. maybe I need to be educated.

Well... After about two years running your tires on these our terrible roads, you notice the threads are already wearing away, you may also have head several punctures added to it. So to be on the safe side, I move them out and move in new ones.
On a good silky smooth roads, tires can stay up to 5years, provided they are still within manufacturer's life warranty

Re: The Best Tyre For Nigerian Roads by Nobody: 6:01pm On Jun 15, 2015
I read through this thread and it is amazing how very little anybody knows about tyres.

Even those giving others hard knocks for their supposed ignorance dont know any better either.

I hear people talk about things like expiry date and brand. Those are the tiniest details you should worry about when buying tyres.

The more important details are things like speed rating of your tyre, load capacity, maximum permissible dimensions that your car was designed to carry by virtue of the radius of you wheel arc, tyre pressure, thread longevity. It is after you have considered these things that you can begin to talk about expiry date.

Besides, a tyre is built for the next 6 years. There's probably still plenty of time left on that toks tyre.

If you can afford it. Try Michelin Super Sport Tyres...they are usually designated ***/** ZR** e.g 245/45 ZR18. That's what I use right now and i must confess that the driving comfort I'm having on this tyres is unprecedented considering out rough roads. I hardly feel the effect of rough and bumpy roads. The tyres are softer and quieter than all the ones I've ever used. On wet roads during the rains? the handling is quite great and on corners too...the stopping distance is shorter.

Like I said. If you can afford it go for it...its quite expensive.

kumho and prolly Hankook are korea, stay away from it. most hyundai and kia brands come default with them, better remove it and replace Asap for your own safety.
those tires aint meant for Nigerian roads

I second that. Had a nasty experience when I just bought my car. A Hyundai that came with Hankook tyres. Tyre popped at high speed on Ikorodu road. Got robbed by area boys while changing to the spare. Been using Pirelli since.

Can you please connect me to the company Rep.in Nigeria. My partner is a Thai who is a tyres exporter and would like to get importers from Nigeria for his tyres. Asides Thai brands,he also exports Japanese brands too to interested buyers. Please incase you have any question or comments before connecting me to them, this is my email address and phone numbers.

After using Double King 205/55 R16 for at least 4 years, I ran into a deep pothole on the way to Minna that got me worried about the tyre sometime last year but to my surprise nothing happened! I even thought the tyre will become useless because I felt the slight hit on the rim. Recently, I replaced the tyres with the same product again. Relatively cheap and dependable.

I heard Maxxis is of a very high quality too. I bought it this month on another car that had Michelin but I haven't used it long enough to say much about it.
