There's no default anger anywhere. That "Sorry" ish was coined out from locals. Igbo will say Biko what time is it? While Yoruba will say Jo and Hausa will even beg you with Allah Dan Allah what is the time.

We are very apologetic as a Nation. It is an inferiority complex. It affects me till today even though i moved societies for years now.

Everybody is angry, so it is proper to say "Sorry"before you can get fervent attention.

Sorry is another word for Excuse me. Politeness. Ask Britain before you guys continue saying nonsense.

It does sound weird though. "Excuse me" sounds better for politely calling someone's attention...

Ironically, in Nigeria, people use "excuse me" to either angrily tell someone to go away ,that they are going away or that they will start ignoring you immediately after!

I guess the poster is local, even in developed countries, they say sorry before asking strangers questions, the reason is being polite and some people might be thinking of other things or busy and you're like disturbing the person, you need to add "sorry" "please" or "excuse me" before asking your questions.

It's the standard way of speaking English.

A British man will start most sentences of seeking favour with sorry please.

Official way of asking a superior to do something in a memo is 'please kindly'

If it's a subordinate it starts with 'please'

In informal settings it's 'sorry please'

It's also common to answer thus;

Sentence : 'sorry please, what is the time?'
Answer: 'I'm afraid it's past noon.'

'Sorry please when does the bus arrive?'
'I'm afraid the bus already left.'

We picked that way of speaking from our colonial masters.

this is a good observation..... Really many people are found of this..... "apology" b4 question or throwing their observation or contribution.\

Most of the people doing this have self intimidation and self defeat..., fear of faces and places, in fact all fears

Before you approach someone as such you need to compose yourself... No one can just scold u out.... composure matter sssss.
How do you expect one that is busy or under pressure to just attend to another who is not bold... Delete self intimidation before such approach.

Lucario007:

Sorry, but, do you know what you are saying?
Sorry is not a word indicated for politeness.
sorry
ˈ/sɒri/
adjective
1. feeling sad or distressed through sympathy with someone else's misfortune.
2. feeling regret or penitence.

See you forming intelligence but u cant see the no.2 of the definitions is more of an excuse me. People often say excuse as a form of pernitence, like when they sneeze or belge. What is sorry if its not a word for politeness in english? Okpo.
