Atheists, Is The Act Of Committing Murder Wrong? by Nobody: 11:15pm On Apr 24, 2017 |
I just want to have a civilized debate with any atheist on Nairaland who is up for it. The subject is simple. Is the act of committing murder wrong? Do you think taking the life of someone else is morally impermissible? If yes, does this notion apply to every instance or circumstance under which such act is committed? If anyone is wondering why my title is addressed specifically to atheists, well, it's because I think they don't have any workable framework for objective morality and as such, morality seems to be more of a subjective quality to them. So I want to see how their moral intuitions are calibrated on the question of murder. Still, opinions from theists are also welcome. |

It is not wrong. but when you drink the blood, that's where the problem sets in . last month I killed 3 animals (men) and nothing happened you see, we are all animals. but with different mentality some of the animals I kill are just like you, they ask stupid questions a lot 2 Likes |

That atheists do not believe in the existence of a Supreme Deity doesn't mean they don't know the difference between right & wrong 1 Like |

Foxyn: More like an incoherent, badly written reply that bespeaks of a remarkable inability to pass across your opinions effectively through writing. I couldn't comprehend the first four "paragraphs" of your post. I couldn't even understand the point you were making. Reading your response was really excruciating. 2 Likes |

thesicilian: I would like to know how you arrived at this distinction between right and wrong. What's your basis? What's your definition for what's wrong and what's right? And I find it a bit odd that you seem to be speaking on behalf of every atheist. Are you the spokesperson for the Association Of All Atheists On Planet Earth? Or are you somehow clairvoyant that you know the mind of every atheist in the world? Wouldn't it be better if you addressed the question from your own perspective, instead of purporting to know what you don't know? 1 Like |

chemystery: I think I'd prefer if you made independent arguments rather that borrow lines from internet memes to respond to a question that was cleary addressed to Nairaland atheists, in order to get THEIR OPINIONS on a very slippery subject, and engage with these opinions through dialogue. I want to know YOUR thoughts, not some words on trite memes that don't even address my question. |

Murder is wrong It's quite simple pure empathy alone would make that a highly untenable proposition and also not to mention you wasting the remainder of your short life in prison But mr OP done since you subscribe to divine command then murder isn't actually wrong because it's wrong its only wrong cuz God... Pardon.. The abrahamic god says so. It is arbitrary and controlled by his preference. There are many times the abrahamic God approved of murder in the bible -the flood -Canaanite genocide -murder of boys by bears -Levites killing Israelites who worshipped the golden calf All these were commanded and endorsed by the Abrahamic God So if the Abrahamic God exists murder isn't actually wrong Afterall he has an ultimately good divine plan na 4 Likes 1 Share |

jonbellion: Lol. Where did I state that I was Christian? So let's talk about empathy which seems to be the core of your main argument. Although empathy is a predominant trait among humans, it's also a trait that is expressed by humans in varying degrees. So there are people that express higher degrees of empathy than others. And there are also people who don't express any empathy at all, by dint of the wiring of their brains. Now, how then can you classify an action as wrong based on a trait that is expressed in varying degrees by some and not expressed in any degree by others? Is the moral obligation to not kill a responsibility of only those who express empathy? Do people who possess greater levels of empathy have a greater responsibility to not kill? Should people who don't express the trait of empathy have no moral obligation to not kill? 1 Like |

Stewie101:Lol Why isn't murder wrong? Anyway Don't u think that atheists should be more afraid of murder, we have law that governs everybody, since atheist believes in no afterlife meaning their current life is all they get, so are they going to ruin their small lifetime in prison? They might even be killed, so u think they still gonna bet it huh Maybe u should direct this question to ur God who drown millions of innocent people cos few bad people, gave a man strength to kill thousands. Or maybe out of hypocrisy u went ahead to ask useless questions, don't u read ur bible Ecclesiastes 3:1-15 1 Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses. 2 He sets the time for birth and the time for death, the time for planting and the time for pulling up, 3 the time for killing and the time for healing, the time for tearing down and the time for building. 4 He sets the time for sorrow and the time for joy, the time for mourning and the time for dancing, 5 the time for making love and the time for not making love, the time for kissing and the time for not kissing. 6 He sets the time for finding and the time for losing, the time for saving and the time for throwing away, 7 the time for tearing and the time for mending, the time for silence and the time for talk. 8 He sets the time for love and the time for hate, the time for war and the time for peace. 9 What do we gain from all our work? 10 I know the heavy burdens that God has laid on us. 11 He has set the right time for everything. He has given us a desire to know the future, but never gives us the satisfaction of fully understanding what he does. 12 So I realized that all we can do is be happy and do the best we can while we are still alive. 13 All of us should eat and drink and enjoy what we have worked for. It is God's gift. 14 I know that everything God does will last forever. You can't add anything to it or take anything away from it. And one thing God does is to make us stand in awe of him. 15 Whatever happens or can happen has already happened before. God makes the same thing happen again and again. u don't even trust your God or maybe u still yet to know about ur God Hypocrite. |

obinna58: I hate to break it to you but I don't believe in your God. He simply doesn't exist and there are a lot of rational arguments that substantiate my claim. I can present them to you but your inordinate level of credulity, and invulnerability to evidence and rational arguments is going to be a massive stumbling block to persuasion, so I am not even going to bother. An extremely naive, fatuous and uncompelling response like yours is why I was specific on the crop of people I wanted to have this debate with. |

Stewie101:good point I believe that's where secular laws come in We have evolved quite a lot in morality a thousand years back slavery, human sacrifice etc was not considered wrong by many but today we have the United nations...ironically those things were when religion was at it's peak. Religions like Christianity have evolved to suit modern times as well unlike the other abrahamic religion "of peace" Morality is a really complicated concept it's not all black and white like world religions paint it out to be I personally feel that anything that males life pleasant to yourself and others does not cause sorrow pain or anguish to a human being can be considered as moral. Murder by this definition cannot be moral so people that don't have this trait will have to deal with the law |
