STOP Comparing Nigeria To Smaller Countries. It Is DAFT. by Rosskii: 10:11pm On May 06, 2017
I have noticed a trend on this site of late.

People come on here and claim how countries like Ghana, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Rwanda etc are all ''more developed than Nigeria''.

Someone even claimed that the Republic of Benin and Togo, were ''more developed than Nigeria''.

I mean, really...... this nonsense has to stop.

You see, by the same criteria these folks use, one can equally claim that GABON is more developed than India.

Why? Because India has more slums, more poor people, more power outages, more corruption, more bad roads, more violence, more illiteracy and deprivation, than Gabon. In fact millions of times more.

The average Gabonese has a higher standard of living than the average indian, as shown by the UN HDI:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index

Gabon's GDP per capita is $14,600, compared to India's $7,000

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Gabon

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_India

Gabon has a population of 1.7 million, while India's is 1.3 billion.

SO, IF YOU CLAIM THAT THOSE SMALL COUNTRIES LIKE ZIMBABWE AND GHANA ARE ''MORE DEVELOPED'' THAN NIGERIA, YOU MUST ALSO ACCEPT THAT GABON IS MORE DEVELOPED THAN INDIA.

Discuss.

Sir, what should be used to decide which country is more developed than others.... The county size?!

Just because a country is bigger, it doesn't change the fact that it could be LESS developed than a smaller country, duh!

You must compare countries that are ALIKE in terms of population. That is the NUMBER 1 thing.

Comparing a country of 200 million with one of 10 million, and saying ''Look! In country B they don't take light, but in country A they take light. So country B is more developed than country A''.

If that is your argument, then that means you believe Gabon is more developed than India. More advanced than India. Ahead of India.

Discussing politics other than "Jonathan was bad, " Buhari is good" is like discussing politics with molluscs.

Why on earth would Nigeria and Zimbabwe or Togo be placed on a scale of development and claiming the latters outweigh Nigeria on the scale

Are you therefore saying that we CANNOT compare Gabon with India?!?!?!?!?!

Here is a clue: let's say I wanted to move to the most developed country between Gabon or India. Will you then tell me that it AUTOMATICALLY has to be India because its bigger?!?!?!?!

one doesn't necessarily need population to determine development except for the strength and per capita.

No, I will tell you that it AUTOMATICALLY has to be India because India is far more developed than Gabon.

Just like any right thinking person will decide to do business in Nigeria before Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Ghana, or any of these other tiny countries you people claim are more 'developed' than Nigeria.

Population don't determine development.

US is 323,995,528 yet more developed than less populated countries

Nigeria is one of the richest countries in the world ... No doubt
But the irony here is that many Nigerians are among the poorest people on planet earth
Who feed on less than a dollar per day
Nigeria is truly undeveloped
No power
No clean water
No shelter
No good roads
Poor air transport and rail systems

We only clout over our population which have been a curse to us
All Nigerians do is to procreate as if it's an achievement
We can't seem to tap into our human capital

The minimum wage in South African when converted to naira is 120,000 while Nigeria prides herself with 18,000
We all should say the truth
Nigeria is a sh.thole

We are referring to DEVELOPING countries. But even among developed countries, the same criteria I used is applicable.

Kuwait, Macau, and Brunei, can claim to be ''more advanced'' and ''more developed'' than the USA, Germany and Switzerland, because they each have higher living standards than the latter.

If we continue with this mindset, we will never get it right in this country.
We like to boast of our large number forgetting that we cannot point at a single thing that makes anyone happy about this country.

We take our blessings for granted. The other day I was in Jamaica, and I guarantee you, no less than 3/4 of every household there has a Nollywood DVD in their house. Such is the popularity of Nigerian films there. In fact when you say you are a Nigerian in Jamaica, they treat you like royalty. Why? Because of Nollywood. This is based on personal experience. In other places like Barbados and Grenada, Nigerian music fills the clubs.. These are cultural assets that are worth more than gold.

Dude, face the topic and stop digressing and lamenting. It is because you have been soundly defeated in your ''Rwanda and Kenya are more developed than Nigeria'' logic, that you are now resorting to lamentation.

Nigeria is like Father A that has 10 children of whom 3 are rich, 2 are just trying, while the remaining 5 are struggling.

Rwanda/Kenya/Zimbabwe, etc are like Father B who has 2 children, with one ''just trying'', and the other one struggling.

Father B then comes out and says he's ''better'' than Father A.

But is he?

The same Nigerian movie that is surviving under the mercy of piracy.
What has the Nigerian government done to curtail piracy?
Do you think the actors are happy?
You can be happy just because you get 16 movies for 300 Naira on a DVD.
The issue is not seeing Nigerian movies outside the country but are the actors making what they are supposed to make?
I am currently in another country and i can tell you that Nigerian movies are everywhere.
Let's tell ourselves the truth, nothing is working down there?

It is high time we all supported restructuring.

You barely made sense.

What matters in development is the standard of living. This isn't measured by size but by certain indices like power, transportation ease, education, doctor to citizen ratio etc and those small countries have better indices compared to the giant with cancer, hiv, aids n typhoid that's Nigeria. Get it?

So Gabon and Rwanda are more developed and advanced than India, correct?

You do realise that by those indices you stipulated, those two African countries surpass India.

The problem is that many Nigerians are quick to compare Nigeria(with a population of 180 million) with another country B(with a population of 20 million) and say,"see, country B has constant light!,chai,Nigeria is a failed state!", "can you imagine, minimum wage in country B is 150,000!,Nigeria is a cesspit!".
If you were to find out how much power country B is generating, you'd discover that it would be vastly lesser than Nigeria's(as in the case of Ghana,Rwanda,Zimbabwe),because they have a very small population and landmass, its enough for them.
Nigeria is definitely underperforming, but it would be a deliberate act of mental redundancy to begin comparing small African countries with us,anyone who does that needs psychiatric evaluation.

Using HDI,the standard of living and quality of life in countries with small population is usually higher than in countries with large number of people; you cannot compare the US with Luxemburg,Luxemburg will sweep the US into the gutters in terms of standard of living.
