Since we quickly forget our History in these parts -

A Channels Television news reporter Enenche Akogwu has lost his life in the Kano bomb blasts that took place a few hours ago this evening, January 20, 2012.

According to Channels TV official website, Akogwu, 31 was said to have been shot by unknown gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, outside the Kano state government house while in the line of duty.

He had just returned to Kano two days ago after spending sometime in Lagos. He is said to have missed his flight twice before switching airlines.

Akogwu, who before his death covered the northern region uncovering breaking stories and events across the troubled northern region, is said to have been a ‘resourceful and fearless reporter’.

‘The management is deeply saddened by the death of their courageous reporter’, the statement read.

He was the winner of Channels Television’s 2011 Chairman’s award and was honoured at the station’s end of the year celebration.

Journalists, including New York Times photographers Tyler Hicks (R- in glasses) and Lynsey Addario (far L), Getty Images photographer John Moore (2nd L), freelance photographer Holly Pickett (3rdL) and freelancer Philip Poupin (4th L) run for cover during a bombing run by Libyan government planes at a checkpoint near the oil refinery of Ras Lanuf March 11, 2011.

Hicks and Addario, along with NYT correspondents Stephen Farrell and Anthony Shadid, went missing after falling behind the lines of Muammar Gaddafi's advancing forces two days earlier.

Two days earlier or two days after this photo was taken? This paragraph is very unclear.

Lets not forget Charles Erukaa of Channels, too.

I remember he was stabbed during attacks on an APC rally in Mama Peace's hometown.

you are right... but it still doesn't change the risks involved..

There's a level of risk in every job... The military takes more risk... this post won't make me fill an ounce of pity for journalist... infact... ordinary folks takes pictures better in riskier situation than journalists these days...

Nigerians!!! Some of you mocking Naija photojournalist...yet I've never read on this forum from a single person praising a Naija photojournalist who get brutalized by polithiefcian security details..No Not one.

Rather you condemn and insult them, taking pictures of corrupt policemen and women, soldiers brutality, SARS over handedness, etc and for what? "not realising this is Naija and power brokers are accepted by the people to do as they please".

photojournalism is a very high risk career. Dying in the line of duty is a harsh reality unfortunately.

i think its high time journalists start making use of drones to cover chaotic areas instead of having to go there and risk their lives.
