I think what we should blame is the notion that marriage is a symbol of social standing and achievement, meant to be pursued by everyone. It is not. But somehow we have reduced marriage to a medal and thereby depleted it's value.

Some marriages are filled with lies and make believe paparazzi
Some are filled with strife due to stubbornness and envy
Some are filled with passion to hurt and not to love and care for the other

Now tell me , if one have a conscience he or she wont lie continuously face to face to the one he or she claim they love about what's not real.

If one has a conscience, he or she won't be thrilled to cheat on their loved ones

If one has a conscience the woman will be true to herself and ask herself. If I marry this man , will I see him as the head of our family ? Will I love and respect him? Or will I rather see him as beneath me ,if not for his money and status ? I won't even near him, how much more marry him. Such lady ? Her conscience is dead , so anything can happen .its just a matter of time ,before everything packs up

A guy who beats his wife at any slightest provocation ? His conscience is dead !

A guy who forks strange women at will even after saying his vows on the alter to be faithful and loyal to his wife ,his conscience is dead!
Likewise the wife too , if she sleeps with strange men during marriage .

Remember if u have a conscience ? U will think before taking any drastic step that could hurt your partner or loved one .

Lol! I think that's a bit extreme. But following your thinking, if there was a decree to abolish marriage, it would relieve the pressure on a lot of young people. It would probably prevent a few suicides as well. But what impact would it have when one gets older and needs the companionship of a spouse, sit around and recollect memories made - shared.......it would feel futile, won't it?

It's better to let people chose. And society shouldn't take it for granted that people automatically will.

Look back into history, when men are the head of the family, with authoritative control over everything, and women are the family keeper, ensuring that everything is in order. See, it would have looked like i was trying to talk down an entire tribe for the personal example i made earlier but can you imagine someone of 9ice's status still desiring a woman who would kneel down and serve him food?
