A Bill seeking to provide for free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills by youth corps members has passed second reading in the Senate.

The Bill which is titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act 2004”, is aimed at equipping corps members with entrepreneurial skills to help them after service year.

Sponsor of the Bill, Senator Stella Oduah, emphasised that the period of the NYSC is to prepare Nigerian youths to rediscover their passions, talents, and skills.

According to the Bill, the NYSC service year will now be split into two, with the first part to be directed towards gaining experience in the work environment while the second part would be geared towards free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, urged his colleagues to remain committed to overhauling the NYSC that suit the present day Nigeria.

“When the NYSC was introduced, the focus was integration and strengthening of Nigeria’s unity but it is clear now that there is need to incorporate vocational skills acquisition to equip our young graduates for better service to the nation and to themselves. I thank Senator Stella Oduah for sponsoring this Bill,” Saraki said.

The new Bill is seeking to insert a new section 5 to provide for a compulsory vocational training for corps members.

Other goals and benefits of the Bill include, securing the future of corps members through the acquisition of relevant skills for business success, learning in a conducive environment with state of the art teaching materials to maximise the service year.

It would also provide access to several funding windows towards starting or improving one’s business, and learning to develop a winning, investor ready business plan, among others.

If they feel there is a need for NYSC members to acquire COMPULSORY skill during service year, then it shows how substandard the quality of tertiary education is in Nigeria

Stupid Bill! Why wait till the youth finishes university to now give them vocational/ entrepreneurial skills. Why not have this incorporated right from primary school to secondary school so that by that time the youth can make an informed decision on their career path. To decide if they want to go to university or polytechnic. To decide if they even want to further education or go into business!

And they'll be thinking they've made the best decision. Our law makers are becoming too dumb for our age.

These skills are supposed to be learnt at basic levels, we have people with excellent abilities who can't afford to go to school. Interprenaurship should be integrated to schools and colleges.

When one graduates into the university or high school or college, it should be he is going to perfect what he is. After school during service it should be that he is using his skill or ability to serve the country, not learning again.

After service the govt should empower him/her based in her skills or group them to set up an industry or company sponsored by the govt until it is established.

When it is established it will create employment, and revenues too to fund other govt project.

Na for youth service dem won go learn skills, such dumb idea.

Stella Oduah. This woman is very intelligent and nice.

When I saw that the NYSC Act was being amended, I expected to see that it has been made optional. NYSC serves no known purpose now: just a complete waste of one year.

But with this present Bill sponsored by Senator Stella Oduah, the program may start serving a little purpose.

The way this thing is headed,

I think the pragmatic thing for middle class parents to do now is set up a long term savings for children, give them quality primary and secondary school education, teach them basic life skills like moderate to advanced computer proficiency, driving, international exposure etc and afterwards set them up as entrepreneurs.

That is if they cant afford better.

University education in Nigeria has lost value.

Instead of them to increase their allowances. Why is Senate fond of falsely raising the hope of prospective Corp members. That was how they clamoured for 48k allowance in 2015 that was not implemented.
