This is an interactive discussion. We are going to be looking at reasons why software projects fail in Nigeria.

I will like people to share their various experiences on this thread so that we can all learn.

Personally, I will start by putting the primary blame on:
- Low budget
- N.E.P.A

This ones are just a TIP of the ice berg, let us open the discussion guys.

To be honest, I don't think NEPA should even be considered a factor, we are all used to the epileptic power supply in this country since childbirth, if you really wanted to undertake a software job you should be ready to provide alternate source of power steadily be it power banks, Inverter, Generators they should be made available. Funding and motivation are what I would consider a major factor.

Hmm, great topic...

Like someone said, since we're in Nigeria, issues like electricity should no longer hinder us because if you intend to create a software, you should have in mind that there won't be power always, so you have to provide an alternative source of power.

I think one of the reasons why software/apps/etc fail is that they're just not good enough and that's because of funding issues and lack of due diligence and proper research.

1) Low Budget: Clients will be begging you with little money (Baba Oko mi) my Inlaw abeg do am now, na small money them sign out, only to discover that along the line the budget does not meet your expenses (Fuel and Internet Cost, among others).
2) Scope Creep: Some Client can be so cunning, that they will tell you to develop a custom Blogging platform for them when they discover that you can program login for them in minutes.

Now, how do we move this thread to the PROMISE LAND?

Plenty of road side/quacks are in the industry. They'll tell clients that they can build a robust software in 3 days for just peanut fee. This is one major factor I see in the industry. Very few good and capable programmers, but plenty people who claim to be software developers because they know small HTML.

The topic "why software projects fail in Nigeria" can u be more explicit by the meaning of fail, do u consider projects like facebook, watsapp, twitter as successes if yes then don't u think it is the idea and sponsorship (first d idea) behind these projects that made them succeed ? my opinion though, if u have the right idea, do you think we will have a failed project no matter the location worldwide, again my opinion.

Imagine a client wanted me to develop a site with the functionality of MMM from the scratch in 3 days. I pointed them to a website they can download an MMM clone and walked away, just imagine the KONKOBILITY!

I think we've gone beyond the era of ideas doing the magic. The problem these days is mostly funding and putting the proper structure in place. There are a lot of smart people who can whip up ideas anyhow, so ideas are really not it these days.

I will never forget dhtml18
that guy is the reason my bank account is smilling today

I use to develop desktop app

until I start monitoring dhtml18 I discover that this guy knows many language but html na his selling point I start emulating him I start learning html 1week. css 1week getting to php I discover it was almost same with c language my favorite language

so I just look at it once download a reference pdf for php

head over to sql and mysql under one month I finish am ready to test my skills learnt so far

few weeks later a close friend hook me up to program huawei modem unlock code calculator in php I was paid 15k

it was like a movies

less than 2weeks I landed a farm website and a website for organization this two website landed almost 150k in my account in less than one month

I have coded in c,c++,python for 4years with total gain of 80k for almost 3years

but in less than 3months in web developing I have earn more than 200k

the reason people fail in programming world is not solving a real problem with your code

you have love calculator, scientific calculator, love calculator, bank software, school, hotel software

they are good but have you actually been to hotel to see how hotel systems work have you been to school and ask lectures and teachers what they need to help them do there work and suggests ideals for them

before I dive into web programming I have offline software which I have do for individuals that help them carry out there daily task fast and easy

this people are the ones that referred to me almost 40% of my web clients

so here is my reasons why people fail

1.not making a usefulness software

2. not knowing your niche ;

believe it or not nothing sells than online and mobile software in Nigeria

200millions active internet users Bro

why develop for offline if you are sure 200millions are waiting online for your web app

3. cheap price

I was once guilty of this
under charging a client later you will discover that only gas money have finish all the money that the beginning of not meeting a dead line

you don't need to kill your client with price

but try to calculate the cost before telling a client the final amount and always to extra 50k or 40K we dey Nigeria even if you tell Him 1k he will still price it five hundreds

it is better to be called over charging programmer than to be called a quack one who always fails to deliver

I will save the lest for another day

Re: Why Software/web/mobile Application Projects Fail In Nigeria by romme2u: 1:32am On May 24, 2017
1. Lack of proper funding and commitment from project owners.

2. Lack of experience and understanding of project requirements/scope by developers.
Most developers over estimate their abilities and undertake jobs far bigger than their skill set especially the newbies who feel they can build anything with their little knowledge which triggers number one point. This in turn destroys the confidence prospective clients have in developers and their ability to deliver complex projects. Reason most firm outsource jobs abroad.

3. Lack of specification and requirement analysis of the project by both parties before commencement.
No proper agreement on project details which leads to misunderstanding between clients and developers during execution causing delays, friction and extensions/freeze.

4. Not keeping to agreements by both parties.
Developer bungles deadlines without proper communication with the client. Client fails to deliver information/content when needed and also fails to assess/approve project milestone on time.

5. Underestimation of project cost and duration which is mostly due to 2 and 3 above.

i would have added lack of proper communication but that depends on a solid agreement between both parties.

Our mobile apps fail to gain traction because we don't have an African-based app store. You could have the best mobile app but it will never show up on top page of google play or apple store. That is problem number 1 for African mobile developers.

sometimes the best programmers ie the one's who could build the next Facebook are the really poor (financially) people. its the responsibility of the Government to at least support programmers by providing these basic amenities.

I repeat, Google, Facebook Whatsapp are powerful apps but have you wondered why Africans don't create viral apps frequently?

sometimes, the problem is lack of collabos.

Most programmers like their 3D/CGI peers feel like Bronze Gods.

They never belive in working together, forming hubs, you know, that sort of thing.

they become too encased in the program they learnt and feel an intense, almost suffocating need, to guard their skill.

They forget that collaborating more breeds innovation and sharpens intelligence. Nigerian programmers should adopt the MIT model
