The Federal Government says it has finalised plans with South African investors to commence mining operations at the abandoned coal mines in Enugu.

The Director General, Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu who led South African investors Simang Group said the new development is in fulfillment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s promises made to Igbos to revamp coal for power generation.

Which is why the investors are in Enugu to meet with the Governor and discuss modalities of operations.
The Managing Director of the company, Andrew Mosangwa emphasised on the need for local partnership and its importance to job creation and power generation.

The Governor of the state, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi expressed his readiness to partner with the group for the realisation of the goal.

Coal mining in Nigeria since the discovery of oil has been relegated as a source of revenue and power generation but has returned on the front burner of both state and Federal Government.

Coal mining causes more environmental damage than oil exploitation. This is not a good news if true. Environmental damage on top 13% derivation? ?

Most SE have abundant oil reserves, federal govt refused to develop them . It's actually a good thing because the stress is not worth it.

Nobody going to give you extra for environmental damage just have a reclamation plan in place. Other states are mining tons of coal without adversely impacting environment too much. If you feel it isn't worth trouble some one should run and tell governor not to bother. He's the one asking Fayemi Kayode to revive these mines.

The oil could be done by government or many private companies in Nigeria or abroad. Just like the bitumen in Ondo not being utilized currently. There may be more factors at play.

Another bloody deceitful lie.

They should just allow Enugu state government to bring in investors. But they wont because they truly dont want the progress of the state or her people.

Are you suggesting that Channels TV is lying?
Or are you simply angry that there is a possibility that a hated Hausa man is about to do what a combination of our people and your clueless hero could not do in over 30 years?

Stop bellyaching and support the move... It doesn't matter whether the cat is black or white, what really matters is to catch the mouse ... Chairman Mao Zedong.

Compared to sitting in darkness, umemployment due lack of power, and burning generator it's good. Coal plants don't release much besides trace elements of heavy metals abd methane. The rest is water and CO2 so as long as you have good scrubbers you'll be ok. Alot of world still uses coal especially South Africa.

Oh well if that's case Nigeria will mess up anything it touches. Look at the roads, power, and environment in Niger Delta. They still flare gas as a millions and a half resolutions to stop. If this makes you feel better coal is mined in 3 states and you don't hear much about adverse environmental impact.

However, Edo coal is sure Banker.

Enugu Coal will serve a greater purpose in republic of Alaigbo where it will be better managed.

Federal Government awards Mining leases. They have the control over mineral. States are allowed to go into mining though. Enugu want to partner with company. He's a picture of them shaking hands.
