Loooool grin

It's just that it's complicated teaching guys who don't know the different between those two textures why it has to be cut. I have to explain what natural hair is and what relaxed hair is, why I have to cut it etc

And after explaining and explaining they still don't understand

Wow I didn't know you could donate African hair or dreadlocs.
My friends wanted to donate too, we went to their website and it was written there that they don't accept afros/dreadlocs.

And daaaaamn waist length is pretty long. I think your locs will be longer anyways because your hair will be stretched. So you might have longer hair than you thought, to begin with
Yes, it's possible to donate them but it varies from location to location, I guess. You're in Germany, right? Yes, my hair will be stretched, thanks to my henna-ing it last month.

lovelygurl:

It's a love and hate relationship. I try to do twist outs or bantu knots so the two different textures won't be visible. But then my natural hair is like "yay let's go" and will come out really good but my relaxed hair is like "uhn uhn, no way, not happening, we have to make her look like a mad woman " grin

And that's its current length
Awww, your little head embarassed. You're trying with your transitioning; I'm proud of you. Your hair looks healthy. Have you decided when you're going to cut off the relaxed ends?

LOL I totally get what you mean. I decided to transition around march so I wouldn't have sparse hair when I cut,but after putting my hair in braids and twists(with extensions) continually for 3 months cos the relaxed part was just opposing any naturally induced hairstyle I just vex and cut everything last week.

Penetrating/Moisturising oils vs Sealing oils

Your choice of oil could be the key in achieving a certain length or growing your hair out faster.
Knowing the difference between
moisturising oils, which are capable of penetrating the hair shaft and sealing oils which just give your hair healthy shine goes a long way

Monounsaturated fats tend to be better at penetrating your hair than polyunsaturated fats, so moisturising oils are mostly monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats are the sealing.

Moisturising oils can be divided into 2 sections. The
highly penetrating and the average penetrating ones.

Highly penetrating oils:

Coconut oil (for every hair porosity)
Olive oil (for medium and high porosity hair)
Avocado oil
Sunflower oil (low porosity hair)
Ucuuba butter (high porosity hair)
Babbasu oil

This oils are the best when it comes to growing your hair ESPECIALLY your EDGES, since they can penetrate the hair shaft. You can use them to preproo, add them into your deep conditioners and your leave in conditioners for best results.

Note: A little goes a loooong way.

Average penetrating oils:

Castor oil
Sweet almond oil
Aprocot kernel oil
Argan oil
Shea butter (high porosity)
Grapeseed oil(low porosity)
Safflower oil

They are in between moisturising oils and sealing oils and can be used as both BUT they'll never be as penetrating as the highly penetrating oils

Sealing oils:

Rice brand oil
Mineral oil
Jojoba oil

They do not penetrate your hair at all and are more likely to sit on your hair. They are the best to use when it comes to sealing a leave in conditioner or just to give your hair a
shiny healthy look. A little also goes a long way

Hello guys, so I big chopped around September last year, I had serious issues with my edges, I'll attach some pictures below, my hair has grown to that awkward stage where it's too long to be a TWA and too short for a full Afro. I don't know what to do to it most of the time, I've been so busy with school these days I just plait it into 4 myself and I'm a terrible plaiter lol so it looks unkept most of the time.

the last time I left it for about a week, it tangled seriously and I went through a lot of troubles getting rid of it. Also I feel like my edges are starting to thin again, I hope I'm being paranoid.
I've been tempted so many times to just relax it.

My hair gets really dry, really really dry, I have to wet it about 4 times a day, I hope you guys can help me with this.

I'm so happy there's a topic like this for us where we can help each other.

I feel like your edges are good now compared to when you were still relaxed. I would recommend massaging castor oil on your edges daily if you feel like they are thinning out

This was me exactly last year. So to avoid manipulating my hair all the time. I just braid my hair and personally it helped me a lot in growing my hair out

Also I feel like you should section your hair each time you want to detangle to reduce breakage. Use water and coconut oil with wide tooth comb. Coconut oil softens the hair which makes it easier to detangle

Another alternative is applying a lot of conditioner in your hair. It also makes it easy to detangle and you will experience little to no breakage.

If you are getting any protective style. Just make sure your edges are not too tight and always cover your hair with satin scarf or bonnet before sleeping

Your hair gets dry because you don't seal the water you are spraying on your hair in. Water is moisture but it evaporates quickly so you have to seal it in with a leave in conditioner/butter/oil. Which means you apply them after the water is sprayed on your hair.

You also have to deep condition every time you wash it. It's a must to regain moisture

Jigba already said it all when it comes to detangling and your edges

And there are actually a lot of hairstyles you can do, that won't let you dealing with your hair for 1/2 weeks, since you seem to be busy.

Here are some videos on how to do then

Maybe you could mix honey, coconut/olive oil and avocado together and then apply like you will apply a relaxer. You are supposed to feel a "slip", which means slipping your hand throughly into your hair and the mixture should be creamy.

I hope it works for you. If not tell me and we'll figure sth out

And oh you are welcome

Lovelygurl you should help me biko, seriously natural hair is a war. I am thinking about relaxing it but the hair it's like a motivation to me to never give up on a task.

1) my hair is really really thick at the bottom (to comb it through to the top is a big obstacle)

2) it tangles at the top thereby causing hair breakage.

3) I'm lazy lazy lazy and tired to even comb it (why won't I when after combing it only to wake up in the morning to see my hair looking like a football field?)

4) my hair shrinks, oh lord!!!! Why?

5) I don't have any ideal product to use (I'm currently using Indian hemp hair cream. Only that.

6) at lost of hair styles to make to make my hair grow faster.

7) it hurts, oh my God! I had to leave it for five days without touching it cos it hurts down to my scalp.

I'm tired, wanna relax it. I have come way too far so I don't wanna quit. Biko, save me from my miserable chore. Sometimes I think my hair hates me or we just don't like each other. embarassed

*my hair at 8 months* you won't blame it for not growing, I literally abandoned it. Had it fixed for the first time ever last month.

@ Ginaz, lemme contribute d little I can.
shrinkage is normal......learn 2 embrace it,I deal wit mine by threading it immediately after washing. threading stretches natural hair a little.

U could pre poo wit warm oil(coconut, olive, Castor, and watever other oil u can get).then deep condition and wash. I use gentelle hair fruits for now and it's ok, though most of d peeps I know use vo5 for deep conditioning, and it's works for them. I finger detangle my hair in other to retain length. I shampoo wit dudu osun and it is ok,am planning 2 buy these natural black soap made by women wit local materials.

I fix hair that last for 4 to 6 wks....so I would give my hair enough rest.

Note: this is just wat works for me, and my hair type is 4c........wat works for u might b different.

Oh dear you don't have to comb your hair grin grin grin. Looool
Like NLchikeeto said, prepoo with coconut oil, which means before your wash day, you apply coconut oil on your fingers and FINGER detangle with it. It takes time but believe me, less pain, less stress, less tangles etc. I'll post a video that shows you how to finger detangle properly. She isn't using coconut oil though BUT, coconut oil goes a long way at softening it, so it's definitely a bonus. Make sure the coconut oil sinks in too by leaving it for 30 mins. That way it will be able to really penetrate the hair shaft.
Prepooing will make your hair easier to wash and then you deep condition which will also soften the hair. NLchikeeto said gentelle hair fruits is good, so you might want to try it out. Or use vo5 products

4) my hair shrinks, oh lord!!!! Why?

You just gotta embrace your shrinkage grin
But there are ways of stretching it out

5) I don't have any ideal product to use (I'm currently using Indian hemp hair cream. Only that.

6) at lost of hair styles to make to make my hair grow faster.

Any protective style will do. Braids etc just like you were relaxed. Erm make sure your hair is well detangled and deep conditioned so they won't pull out your hair. And if it hurts tell them to be more carefully, especially when it comes to your edges. Protective styles should be carried for 4-6 weeks and then it's time to take care of your hair again .

7) it hurts, oh my God! I had to leave it for five days without touching it cos it hurts down to my scalp.

Maybe 'cause youare combing it embarassed

Thanks for your detailed response.....i usually leave my hair after washing it for weeks before I make a hair do. I'm a lazy girl when it comes to hair issues, I'd rather leave my hair without touching it for a whole year. grin

About threading it, I don't like the local rubber threads. Can I thread it with wool? Will it look cool? Those local hair styles (puffs?)

I use hair fruits conditional only, I don't use shampoo(I don't like it, will have to change to another one). I think I will go to the market today to get the black soap you suggested.

Oh thanks, I will give you feedbacks. Muahhh kiss
