I created a thread in 2015 concerning the Warri ownership saga and it even made FP then.

Warri is a very volatile place but let me attempt to present you with some facts:

1. The traditional "Warri" is an Itsekiri enclave and the name seems to be derived from Itsekiri as well.
2. The modern Warri is largely made up of Urhoboland, with some parts of Itsekiriland.
3. The cosmopolitan Warri is 80% Urhoboland (extending to Delta Central LGAs such as Uvwie, Udu and Okpe).
4. The Olu of Warri title has attracted criticisms, litigations, etc between Ijaws (who also occupy riverine Warri areas), Itsekiri and Urhobos.
5. It was finally resolved that the Olu of Warri is JUST a title and he has no hold over Urhobo land or Ijaw land in Warri.
6. Traditional Urhobo homesteads in Warri include: Otovwodo, Ejeba, parts of Okere, Ugberikoko, Ogunu, Iyara, etc.
7. Itsekiri areas in Warri include Upper and Lower Erejuwa, parts of Okere, Ugbuwanugue, parts of Alder's town, NPA area, etc
8. Itsekiris use the term "Warri" to refer to their entire land, including those areas NOT in the city of Warri.
9. Urhobos use Warri to refer ONLY to the Warri City where their land is situated and its adjoining areas. Urhobos have never claimed to own all of Warri but ONLY where their land is located.
10. Both the Urhobos and Itsekiris are MIGRANTS to the Warri area. Itsekiris migrated from Yorubaland while the Urhobos there migrated from Olomu and Agbarha. The time of the migration and who arrived first is a subject of controversy and lost to history.

Point of correction"iyara" is not an urhobo area.

I can't believe someone would come out in the open to state the emboldened. THERE ARE THREE MAJOR ETHNIC GROUPS being Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba. In all, there are 256 ethnic groups in Nigeria. Other ethnic groups are considered minorities and there are sharp differences between tribes and ethnic groups even though they are linked.

The ethnic group submission thing used to be the thoughts of regular Yoruba folks who believe you must be Igbo if you are neither one of them or an Hausa. There is more to the complexity of Nigeria than the three MAJOR ethnic groups.

Fratermathy, I apologise. For some reasons, the mention wasn't visible and I didn't see it. I have seen a whole of lot of folks when don't have a life outside of here and they take pride in forming keyboard champs, you should clearly use the report button some other time, particularly if you don't have any interest in engaging them. Kudos, Oniovo.

Yes, but you said it yourself that why is the South East the only Zone that contains one ethnic group, while all the other geopolitical zones are multi ethnic.
That is why I asked you to list the tribes n the SW for us to hear.

I was just trying to tell you how wrong you were.

There's no point made, there's no meaning detectable in ur post. Please enlighten me

Drawing from your logic then, Igbo is also a tribe. Igbo is a tribe of Hausa (the major ethnic group in Nigeria). EOD.

You guys just think you can wake up and balkanise people's ethnicities in order to propagate your reductionist delusions? Your logic is very clear and if I am to subscribe to its flawed application, then you would also have to agree that Igbo is a tribe of Hausa.

There is only one ethnic group in Nigeria: HAUSA! All others are merely tribes!

Just be sure I won't follow ur lane on this.

My point is very clear. ethnic group is not same as Tribe.

There's nothing more to add.

I understood your post and I'm correcting your assertion which is wrong. There are over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria contrary to your opinion.

You must first understand the difference between ethnic groups and tribes before claiming there are three ethnic groups in Nigeria.

First off, ethnic groups are made up of tribes that share certain things in common. Certain things such as belief, culture and tradition, language, and sometimes, religion. You cannot tell me, as it stands, that Urhobos, Isoko and Itsekiris, for example, belong to the Igbo ethnic group since we can neither belong with the Hausas or Yorubas. This argument of your is horribly flawed and should not be heard from a Primary School student, no harm meant.

Nigeria comprises of a complex people and it would be wrong in every way to claim the country consists of just three ethnic groups. How about we talk about the various origins of these tribes and groups to determine their roots?

Just because you know nothing about the history, religion, and language of the minorities, doesn't mean you should assume that they are the same with that of Igbo.

Let me educate you using ONLY Urhobo now:
1. Urhobos speak Urhobo language. Igbos speak Igbo. Both languages are not from the same roots, not related, not mutually understandable and share NOTHING in common. Even in the phonetic makeup of both languages, there are no similarities.

2. Urhobo culture has very few similarities with Igbo culture. Igbos, for example, have a high bride price, in contrast to the low bride price of the Urhobos. Our traditional dressings are different, our foods are different, our outlooks are different.

3. Urhobo religion is centred around Oghene, Edjo, Orhan, etc. (God, divinities, witches). Urhobos also practice Igbe religion (white chalk religion). Igbos, on the other hand, practice Odinani as their traditional religion. There are no similarities, save for modern Christianity which binds all southerners and many middle belters together.

Now that I have deconstructed your flawed argument on the basis of culture, language and religion, what more idiocy do you have up your sleeve to prove the flawed argument that Urhobo is a tribe of Igbo?

But here's a question;

Has anyone been able to know why Yorubas call everyone else Igbo apart from Hausa? Don't you thing they see some similarities even though you may deny they exist.

I can't believe I'd be arguing this but here goes... However, remember our argument was basically on the number of ethnic groups in Nigeria. You claimed it is just three while the others are simply tribes under these groups.

What is an ethnic group?
An ethnic group is comprised of people who share the same history, culture, language and physical characteristics.
http://www.answers.com/Q/What_is_an_ethnic_group

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a category of people who identify with each other based on similarities such as common ancestral, language, social, cultural or national experiences. Unlike other social groups (wealth, age, hobbies), ethnicity is often an inherited status based on the society in which one lives. In some cases, it can be adopted if a person moves into another society. Membership of an ethnic group tends to be defined by a shared cultural heritage, ancestry, origin myth, history, homeland, language or dialect, symbolic systems such as religion, mythology and ritual, cuisine, dressing style, art, and physical appearance.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_group

With the above in mind, do you mind explaining how the Urhobos share common ancestors with the Igbos, for example, or how the Ijaws share theirs with the Yorubas?

There is no argument here, please.

So, what you're saying in essence is that there are millions of Ebira people in the SW?

this migration has been happening before colonial times.

Intermarriage has happened.

we have Ebira people settlements in states like Ekiti and ondo, and they now see those states as home.

basically, we cannot give a specific number!

Truth is, there are no similarities. Most Yorubas are uneducated when it comes to the complexities of people in Nigeria. They are so close-minded that you must be Igbo if you are neither a Yoruba nor a Hausa man. And save we choose to live on lies, there are no similarities that are glaring. Deities and ancestral roots, foods, religions, political orientations cum systems, rites and practices, fashion, etc., are not in any way related, not in the eyes of a Yoruba man, but in the eyes of both an Urhobo man and an Igbo man.

So, how come they're able to tell an Hausa man. They may not be as ignorant as we think. as a matter of fact everyone is ignorant o one subject or the other. To Igbos, especially those in the east, if you're from any state in the north, you're Hausa and if you're Yoruba and also a muslim and go to mosque, you may make the cut to be called Hausa as well. So, the ignorance is a national and even global issue.

Well, you have a point, but believe me when I say the Yorubas are more close-minded in this area than other folks. An Igala man or someone from Otukpo is a Hausa man in the eyes of the Yoruba man, just as an Ijaw, Urhobo, Ibibio or Efik folk is an Igbo man. To them, there are three ethnic groups in the country (the same mentality PrecisionFx is exhibiting).

Sadly, it is a national issue, particularly to those who don't travel. I would not say it is a global issue because the world at large understands origin, race and tribes far more than we ever could. If you frequent Quora, you would know this.

Egun is one

Eguns are basically Yorubas with a twist from Dahomey.
They were under the Oyo empire for Hundreds of Years, they have deeply intermarried with the Yorubas, They all SPEAK YORUBA language, Bear Yoruba names or a mixture, worship same gods as Yoruba, eat same foods, etc.

Even when you go to Porto Novo, Benin Republic, the Eguns have heavily blended with Yorubas even there as well.

Now How about Igala in Anambra? and Idoma in Enugu?

In some places , they are indistinguishable from Yoruba. Egun communities in Nigeria call their rulers Oba, while those in Benin call their Kings Aholu.

So, you are now the Master of Egun tradition or what? The last part of your statement shows How IGNORANT you are, because Eguns believe in Mawu-Lisa just the same way Yorubas have their Oduduwa. Mawu Lisa is the mother of all Humanity. According to them, Mawu created all things as she was being moved around the primordial earth in the mouth of Ayida Xwedo.

Olukumi villages of delta should be moved into Edo, while Igbanke village of Orhiomwon should be moved into Delta/Anioma.
Itsekiri should also be moved to Edo state, so that the Eddos can have a coast, and also share a state with their half brothers.
