Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by aamstih: 4:58pm On Jul 07, 2017
Hello bro, I would advise to go through this thread from page 1 as your first step towards the USA dream.

The best time to write the GRE would be when you know that you've prepped well and the session that you're also targeting.
Are you targeting spring 2018 (January) or Fall 2018 (August/ September)?

As regards tutorials, I don't know about your basic grasp with Basic Maths and intermediate/high level level vocabs but I could say that you don't really need a class room tutorials, there are various smart ways to do that and magoosh videos is a great alternative.

hello gurus in the house, I am planning on writing GRE in Oct and I need some material. I have gotten barron, gruber and the official ETS material. I don't knw if anyone can assist with 5lb Manhattan series and Magoosh materials.

Secondly I have a Bsc (3.86/5) In geology and Msc in petroleum Geosciences (4.84/5). I Have a published paper in a well recognised journal (NAPE). I intend going for PHD but if not possible I can go for another MSc spring or fall 2018. What are my chances of getting funding and I need advice of safe schools that offer geology.

Honestly, there is no hard and fast rule for categorizing safe or ambitious school these days. It all depends on your field, for example FIT may be a safe school for others but for I/O psychology its top 10. Look through each departments publication record online, see association rankings, get in contact with current students and alumni, then you'll be able to choose which is safe or ambitious for your profile.
Same thing goes for your publication, check the journal's impact factor online, did you pay to publish? Is the journal indexed on a reputable repository? Publication is encouraged when its really in a reputable journal (i am not a specialist in your field).
Your chances of funding for a PhD study are better than for MS, however, there are no guarantees. Apply to as many programs as you can afford.
Finally, for prep materials, go back through each page of the thread you'll find a multitude of them.

Google PhD in Petroleum Geology in US and start ur search from there. Majority of the schools I know are top schools. University of Michigan, Texas A M University College Station, Pennsylvania State University, I think you should look at Louisiana State University!

Good one, please can you share details on the GRE registration by Mafit? I have since two different sites claiming GRE by Mafit with different layouts but same contact info. I think one is testportals. I will appreciate your quick reply. Time to start believing our citizens. grin
mfarad:
My GRE experience:

Apologies for the delay, I've been extremely busy of late.
I sat for the GRE on the 11th of May.
I stumbled on this excellent thread in the course of running background checks on B.Y Mafit (ended up registering for TOEFL and GRE through them)
Back then, I knew nothing about funded grad study in the US and had already set my eyes on some fully funded programmes in the Mid East for Fall 2017...
Weeks later, after reading the entire thread at the time (you don't know what you're missing if you haven't read it all), I started prepping for the GRE towards Fall 2018 admission as the GRE wasn't required for the Mid East programme (or so I thought).
Days after submitting my applications, I was contacted by the grad coordinator that following a review, the GRE is now required (minimum of quant-155), and a month extension was given to sit and report scores. Hence, my prep time was cut short from the intended 3 months to about a month of rigourous study (I also reduced my expected verbal score from 160 to 155 and from 165 to 160 for quant, had no set expectations for AWA )...

Prep:
I made use of this site : www.greenlighttestprep.com
(when the registration was still free, subscription is still less than magoosh's though)
Interestingly it's the same guy (Brent) who did the magoosh quant videos. Obviously, he now runs his own platform.
For practice, I made use of the famous Manhattan 5lb practice questions, making sure I practice thoroughly immediately after watching the video explanations of the topics (don't fall for the illusion of competency, thinking you've mastered the concept by just watching).
Also used the original GRE guide and the two practice questions books (verbal and Quant)

Since my prep time was limited by the looming deadline, I focused more on quant, especially when I scored a fair 159 in verbal in my diagnostic test. Surprisingly my verbal score was higher than my quant in all my practice tests (Manhattan, Kaplan, powerprep 1 &2, paper test 1), ranging from 157- 159 while my quant was 154 - 156...
Prep Apps:
I downloaded "Ready4gre" (very good app for quick practice, it shows your expected scores based on performance and has leaderboards showing how you rank compared to other candidates. I remember RexCheeng also pointed it out)
Magoosh vocab app (used it sparingly, felt my verbal was good enough for a 155)

For the AWA, I managed to read all the issue topics about two days to the day and skimmed some responses on quora and other forums, I felt the argument was easier since I just had to find the fallacies.

Test Registration (BY Mafit)
I must commend these guys for their excellent service (especially when their fantastic pricing introduced me to this wonderful thread).
However, they almost gave me high BP when the first attempt at registering me for my selected date failed, I received an email from ETS saying "order failure"
For some strange reasons, I felt BY Mafit's "scheme" was busted and was already preparing my argument if asked to pay any extras to the 50k (turned out I was only paranoid).
Also, my test date was almost shifted a week closer by the rep, saying the previous date was filled (that would have translated to less than 3 weeks of prep time). A quick check on the the ETS site showed otherwise so I prevailed on her to try the previous date till it was successful
(Morale: Don't leave your affairs to anyone- one of the numerous takeaways from the "Elders" on this thread)...

Test day

I arrived Abuja the evening before the day, I took the train from Kaduna to Abuja (lasted 2 hours, if only we could have the same system across the country)

The morning of the test day, I woke with a pounding headache (I was using the Ready4gre app throughout the train ride)
I also skimmed the qc strategies videos.

I finally arrived Galaxy uniprep centre around 9am (exam was slated for 10). Interestingly, I was the last test taker to arrive. Since I took my TOEFL at the same centre some months before, I was already familiar with the centre, same proctors...

After the AWA (was just meh, got a claim and reason type question for the issue), then the Quant (meaning the experimental would be quant. I was a little ticked. Tip : don't have any preference for the order)...

First quant was GRE "standard"...
then the first verbal!!! Oh boy!!! Had me staring at the screen for long... Is this English? Made me Forget the plan to tackle the RCs last...

Break: Everyone was commenting on the verbal. I took my snack, gulped a lot of water, still hoping for the best...

Second quant, as expected, I was unruffled...
Second verbal, way too easy. Completed and cross checked every question with more than 10 minutes still left... Took the opportunity to use the restroom (drank too much water during the break)...

Third quant... Easy... The fear sets in, is this experimental? Or is this it?
Reported scores...

Quant- 157 (3 points below target of 160)
Verbal- 152 (again, 3 points below the target of 155, lower than all my practice tests. Well, I didn't prep for it, couldn't complain)
AWA- 3.5 (about 15 days later, so my essay was Indian esque)

[Left the centre not knowing what to think, most test takers were frowning, others left without saying anything, an elderly lady said she'll try again in 3 months...]

The Beginning.

You can write anyone first, what counts is being well prepared for it.

GRE Reading Comprehension and Sentence Completion requires 'GRE vocabulary' and needs more work, Toefl Reading and Listening are normal everyday use of English.

For me, Writing section for both tests was prepared for by learning grammar and sentence structure.

Download the GRE PowerPrep and Ets Toefl materials and see questions Very similar to the actual test.

I used them, though I can see they did a redesign and it is stated on the site. I paid from port harcourt, if you can't risk it please visit their Lagos office.

They also said they are affiliated to testportal.

The company is genuine, over 6months and no issues with my registration. I don't work for them, the cheap price just too sweet for person not to grab am.

Hello house, this thread is very informative. Keep up with the good work. I'm in a state of dilemma and I need some educational advice. I've written gre and toefl with scores of Q155 V 153 and 96/120 respectively. However, I was denied admission into LSU and Texas A&M for fall 2017 admission. I felt the reason is because my gre score is low and have decided to write another but I need advice on safe schools to apply to as I don't want to be disappointed again. I have a Cgpa of 4.13/5.00 in BSc Chemical engineering and would like to go for master's in chemical engineering too. Thanks as I await a speedy response.

There is this saying that says ''If we don't fight we have failed, but if we fight we can either fail or succeed''. So forget the tuition part for now and put in some work. First, you need to decide on the course you want to study, To save you some stress start from this website http://graddecision.org/ to know the application process, So step 1) Decide on the course you want to study 2) Search for schools using a)www.msinus.com (open this website with a laptop, you should see a list of school and ranking for some of the most common courses, you can start from there b)www.gradschools.com c)www.google.com (you can just type 'msc in bla bla in the us in google' d) www.usnews.com e) www.4icu.org . 3) check up the website of the schools you find, to see the requirements. most schools will require GRE and some will require both gre and toefl . 4) Register for standardize exam and take it. You can register for gre as soon as you are ready and prepared to take the exam. Its done online at www.ets.org. You can also get all the information you need about the exam on the website. You will get adequate materials to prepare for the exam in this dropbox I createdhttps://www.dropbox.com/sh/t9ot6d07hp1lkm7/AADL_dTihjEvNBRCBsmAcoXja?dl=0

TOEFL is an English test required by some US universities. though, some schools waive due to the fact that Nigeria is an Anglophone country.
For toefl, all you need are the speaking noteful videos in the link below, the ets toefl guide is enough to ace the exam for other sections. Just download the toefl ETS Guide from there website and the simulation test.

As for the Tuition, if you have good results (GRE, GPA, Toefl), SOP and LOR; US schools do offer assistanship to graduate students. This can either be Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant or Administrative Assistant. Depending on the school, if you get an assistantship, your Tuition will be waived and you will also be paid a monthly stipend that can take care of your living expenses. One advice, once you shortlist schools, send emails to the grad cord of the schools and ask specific questions relating to that course and funding opportunities, be very explicit.

Lastly, there are basically 2 admission session in the US, Spring (Jan) and Fall (August). Schools admit more students in Fall, so Its advisable you plan towards Fall 2018. If you plan to resume in fall 2018, make sure you submit all your application documents before ending of Dec 2017. If you don't give it a trial, you will never know.My philosophy in life is to always do my part, with that I don't get to regret later. Above all, if you believe in God,pray to him..if not, good for you.
