Dear, there is no form of mediocrity in my thinking + I'm neither basic nor simple.
What I am trying to point out is, don't ever give up on a college degree!
At the moment I'm gaining experience from one of these companies, trust me in a matter of years I could peel off and either venture into entrepreneurship or seek greener pastures.

My point is, I dint favour apprenticeship over a college degree to gain experience or fend for myself; rather I chose a college degree which is in turn paying me very well and equipping with over x3 the knowledge an apprentice will gain in the same time frame.


However, you may be right to conclude 'it won't work for you that way'...

Friend, I think they are talking generally and statistically. There must still be a few exceptions to the rule - like yourself. But how many multinationals are there in the country, and how many can they employ. We need to create our own indigenous industries. We are thinking of possibilities of entrepreneurship and self-employment. The fact now is that the University and polytechnic system in Nigeria has failed and people have to device alternative and useful education or perish.
Besides, even in that industry u are, the training u think u are getting is highly specific and biased to that industry to enable u function as a useful part in a vast and complex machine. [s]If or when u leave that job after many years, you will be like a fish out of the water unable to function competently anywhere in the real economy[/s]. I know u may not accept all these but its good that u know it.

Apprenticeship training in advanced country is world class. Alot make more than senior engineers in the same company, but it could be physically demanding.
They go to polytechnic or colleges for 4months in a year and for 3-4 years.

Do you know what employers are looking for these days? Experience. If you've spent 5 years in uni, and you've never worked in the industry that you have a degree in, you're practically useless. That's why so many graduates all over the world are lost when they graduate. I'm not saying a degree is useless, but at the end of the day its just a certificate, and employers want more. What sets you apart from the crowd? When you've had experience, you will always have the upper hand to someone who hasn't. Don't look down on apprenticeships. Educate yourself and get out of the closed box you're in.

Apprenticeship in Nigeria without education is the best way to forever remain a nobody.

Just walk down your street and see the life of a vulcanizer, mechanic, barber, panel beater and the rest.

Among the richest people in Nigeria, how many are practising apprenticeship.

How often do companies advertise for positions that require ONLY apprenticeship skill.

@Op, you can even communicate effectively because you are educated.

How do you expect a roadside mechanic without education to master the art and science of business management, marketing strategies, Research and Development and Quality Assurance which are necessary requirements in today's business world?

Your arguement is that apprenticeship is better than College degree and you are still arguing that he/she can combine both. This is illogical to me.

If you choose apprenticeship over education, then stick to it and let us see how many of them will be more successful than those who are truly educated.

Darling, dont accept being mediocre. Being basic and mediocre will not get you far in life. Just because a company doesnt require experience at entry level, doesn't necessarily mean that they wouldn't choose someone who has over you. Grades are not pratical. You have to set yourself apart in the employement world, esp in this day. So many 1st class holders with no employment because they think 'grades' only, will take them far. Think outside of the box, it's a characteristic of successful people.
