Two days ago, President Olusegun Obasanjo at an event in his presidential library was reported to have pronounced the death of the largest opposition party in Africa, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in what patriotic Nigerians considered to be an irresponsible comment from “Baba”. According to the report, the former President opined that the death of PDP happened after the exit of himself and Chief Ahmadu Ali from the party.

Obasanjo, A Major Problem In PDP
It is unfortunate that Baba has failed to realize that he and Ahmadu Ali were part of the people that caused foundational crises in the party during their reign as President and party chairman respectively.

The party started experiencing crises shortly after Obasanjo’s emergence as President and during the buildup to the 2003 General election. Obasanjo not only destroy the various party organs and in his bid to make the party an extension of his personal property, he also removed those at the helms of affairs within the party that refused to do his bidding. He destroyed internal democracy in the party and was dictatorial to the extent that Obasanjo would unanimously remove party chieftain that criticized his leadership.

For instance, when Audu Ogbeh was Chairman of the party, he wrote a letter in 2004 to President Obasanjo lamenting on the state of affairs of the country especially with the handling of the Anambra political/leadership crises between then Governor Chris Ngige and his godfather, Chief Chris Ubah. Obasanjo was angry at Ogbeh, he threatened to send Ribadu led EFCC against him, he didn’t stop there. He went to his house, ate with him, and forced him to resign. That wasn’t enough, Obasanjo frustrated Ogbeh and his loyalists to the point that they joined then Lagos state Governor Bola Tinubu in the Action Congress.

Audu Ogbeh’s case is just one out of many. It was Olusegun Obasanjo that frustrated former VP Atiku Abubakar and his loyalists out of the party to AC by using his hatchet man, Colonel Ahmadu Ali, whom he imposed on the party as Ogbeh’s replacement. The Ali leadership of PDP announced re-registration exercise but refused to register those opponents of Obasanjo and their loyalists.

Among those that left for opposition due to the deeds of Obasanjo are late Solomon Lar, Governors Joshua Dariye of Plateau state, Boni Haruna of Adamawa state, Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state and Rasheed Ladoja of Oyo state etc.

Even out of power Obasanjo continued in his ignoble path of party dictatorship, and it was seen in his home state where he used Chief Buruji Kashamu to frustrate Governor Gbenga Daniel in 2011 and succeeded in handing party structure to Kashamu so as to produce General Tunji Olurin as the party’s governorship candidate in the election. Out of protest, Gbenga Daniel and his people refused to campaign for Olurin the party’s candidate, but instead floated a party PPN to campaign for Gboyega Isiaka, their chosen. That event led to the loss of PDP in Ogun state in that election.

Even the present crises in the PDP can also be traced to Chief Obasanjo’s 2011 decision to discard the internal gentleman North-South agreement of PDP that he midwifed in 2006 in his bid to foist President Goodluck Jonathan, his estranged godson as the party’s candidate for that year’s Presidential election. Perhaps if that gentleman agreement was respected, the PDP wouldn’t have had the crises of 2015.

Chief Obasanjo is the grandpatron of impunitive leadership. He is a man that most undemocratic governors and party chieftains learnt from. He should hide his head in shame and respect his age.

Colonel Ali Exit is A Welcome Development
As for Colonel Ahmadu Ali (rtd), he is the same man that rigged out Chief Osakwe in the PDP ticket for Delta North Senatorial District and gave the party ticket to his WIFE in 2007. But as God will have it, Chief Osakwe defected to Accord Party and won the election ahead of Ali’s wife. Is Ahmadu Ali not the same Ali that proclaimed that PDP will rule for 50 years and at the same time destroying PDP structures as Obasanjo’s hatchet man? The same Ahmadu Ali that could not win his Local Government and his Kogi state for PDP in the 2015 Presidential election despite being the Director-General of PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation, an organization that misused party’s campaign funds for their own personal needs? In fact, his exit from the party is even a welcome development.

PDP, Is Very Well Alive
While I agree that PDP is not what it was in the past in terms of strength, I also believe that the party is only a sleeping giant that is undergoing a very important phase in its life in order to come out stronger and better.

For the first time, we have a party that is ready for overhaul and put the party in the path that will be of great servitude to Nigeria as envisaged by the noble founding fathers of the party. For the first time, the role of young people as an important player in the party is recognized and considered as reflected in the report of the Professor Jerry Gana Strategy Review and Inter-Party Affairs Committee.

One thing I know for sure is that the road may not be smooth but as long as the party continues in this noble path it has chosen, the future is bright… Happy 80th birthday President Olusengun Obasanjo, the grandfather of undemocratic politics, I am glad to tell you that PDP is very well alive! Come 2019, the Umbrella flag shall be hoisted in Aso Rock.

The game of politics is about interest, interest ranges from that of the overall populace, a group of people, individuals etc. A close look at both the ruling APC, the Sheriff factional PDP and that of the victorious Markafi camp clearly point to the interest they all represent- The Political Elite

When you look at both the PDP and APC constitutions, they clearly tilt to favor the political elite in both parties. In fact, it is difficult (if not impossible) for an outsider to emerge candidate through a transparent process without the dictate of political gladiators or godfathers in both parties. These aspirants emerge candidates, win elections and continue to protect the same interest of the elitist group. Hence, the phrase, "All of them are the same".

Before the launch of APDA on June 5, 2017, I was of the opinion that the party is neither a PDP fall-back or a plan B for the Markafi camp, the judgement has clearly given the APDA an opportunity to affirm what they stand for as a party.

The APDA, unlike the APC and PDP, has a constitution that surrenders power to their the people. This is a party whose constitution erode delegate system to entrench direct primary system that will see all members of the party to partake in the election of party leaders, candidates and other elective representative.

The APDA as a party allows for a minimum of 25% elective and appointive slots of members of Youth age (18-35) in all public and party offices. It further state a minimum of 30% for women and 5% for people living with disabilities.

Why then should Nigeria people, youths and women continue to waste their time, resources and votes on the parties (APC, PDP) and factions (Sheriff and Markafi) that only protect the interest of the political elite at the expense of the common man?

I am very happy that PDP crises has settled and PDP political heavyweights will concentrate on their party. I am very happy that the Nigeria electorates will now have the privilege to discern that APDA as a party means business.

One truth we must tell ourselves is that, whether Markafi or Sheriff, PDP is DEAD!!! It has gone 6 feet in the Northwest, it is hopeless in the Northeast, it is the equivalent of Ebola in the Southwest, in the Southeast Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB calls the shot even when PDP controls government (due to the fact that APC is/was no option). In the Southsouth, the governments in power are as incompetent as the government at the center, the story is not different in the Northcentral.

The ruling APC has failed but the only option for Nigeria in 2019 is to embrace a party that they can be active stakeholders in determining candidates for elective positions, so as to have emergence of leaders whose loyalty will be to the Nigeria people not the political elite.

Today I was at the Shehu Yaradua center for the report presentation of the PDP's Strategy Review and Inter-Party Committee, which was headed by a founding member and former minister of Information, the brilliant Prof. Jerry Gana. Present at the event were the National leadership led by HE Sen Ahmed Makarfi, BoT Leadership, founding fathers led by Alhaji Adam Ciroma, and all other organs of the party including former Governors, present and past NASS members, former Ambassadors, ministers, youths etc.

Prayer For Buhari
I was filled with joy when the Chief servant of Niger state Alhaji Adam Muazu while opening prayer according to Islamic faith took his time to pray for the President and asked God to grant him speedy recovery so as to enable him resume his duty as President. Again, Senator Ahmed Makarfi took his time to offer the same prayer while giving his Chairman's remark. The prayer was again reechoed by HE Celestine Omehia during the closing prayer. I was so pleased that I'm associated with a party that refused to make unguarded and insensitive statements over thei health of the President despite political differences.

The Highlight
While the reading of highlight of the report was going on, I was nodding my head, filled with joy because the new PDP is actually what any sane democracy need. Among the proposal was establishment of a Youth wing of the party, institutionalising the social media wing, establishment of women wing, guidelines to ensure every member participate in primaries and conventions, a policy to always put forward the best and popular candidates, a guiding policy and blueprint to ensure all PDP governors and leaders perform. rebranding of the party's image etc.

During the program, the highlight of PDP's achievement since 1999 was read by Hon Rosita Chidoka, a former minister of Aviation and anchor of the event . Also the National Chairman Ahmed Markafi apologised to Nigerians for the mistakes of the party on behalf of the PDP administrations between 1999 and 2015. I was touched by this!

Chief Dan Iwanyanwu lightened the place by "gingering" party members, while Alhaji Adamu Ciroma, a founding father of the party took the Assembly through memory lane. Professor Jerry Gana reiterated the ideals of the founding fathers and charged the leadership to live by it by adopting the report. In fact, Senator Markafi was unapologetic when he hailed the report.

Why Am I Proud Of PDP?
I have always maintained that for the party to make a mark in 2019, serious reforms and rebranding MUST be done. I am so glad that we are at a stage where some of us can proudly come out and proclaim membership of the PDP.

I am also proud of PDP for not playing politics or making reckless statements on the health of Buhari like some commentators. We wish Baba safe health and speedy recovery to lead Nigeria till we kick him out in 2019 to install a PDP government.

I may have criticised some things about the party in the past, but all those was to see the party do the right thing- which they are doing.

I am proud of PDP! Come 2019 we shall march to reclaim Aso Rock!!!

why do I ask? There is an adage that goes thus .... You must first examine what He who promises you clothes is wearing before you accept the offer....

in my humble submission I am inclined to believe that only a jobless yoot will have such luxury of time to pander to the whims and caprices of the political elites as tonyebarcanista has been doing consistently. By now I am certain the only consistent and constant thing about his is inconsistency.... The real reasons he left PDP are a story for another time...

I am neither a PDP or APC member but this character pickles my interest... are Nigerian youths (not yoots) this gone? with characters like this around what is the hope for the future of Nigeria as a nation?[/s]

Nigeria need youths that will stand for a principle and not conform with the irresponsible act of the elitists (which APC and PDP represent).

If you were sensible, you should have asked some key questions:
1. What is the difference between APC/PDP And APDA?

2. Which is important between conforming with the undemocratic ideals of APC/PDP and leaving both for a party that represent everything a sane society needs?

I'm in politics to reform not to conform!!!

In fact, PDP Chieftains and groups still want me back... But I doubt if even a WhatsApp Admin know you
