Bros this is a Stup1d article.
There are no types of 1st class graduates and luck doesn't help a student to offer 60 courses, score 40 As and 20 Bs.

Ur blog will die if u keep playing this kind of empty n S1lly articles.

Bro, perhaps he had not see it from different angles..He is doing so now. There's always room for expanding views.

Seriously undecided I believe thoroughbred graduates, particularly those in STEM, should be able to put to practice what has been learnt.
What is the use of a First Class degree or any other degree when all you know is theory? Who theory help?

Apart from medicals n law, 99% of Nigerian graduates know only theory.

Nigerians & the worship of school degrees. SMH. How much has our worship of degrees done for our country? NOTHING...NOTHING TO SHOW.

Nobody cares about your worship of degrees if the knowledge does not translate to bettering real life situations on ground.

You people say this all the time. But a degree is needed to advance to the level where a higher knowledge will be attained to stimulate advancement.

Some will mouth Facebook, Microsoft etc, but the people hired to run these places have degrees from the best universities around. In addition, contemporary research that has led to technological advancement was performed by people who had degrees...In this case, research degrees

NIGERIA DOES NOT HAVE EVEN A SINGLE UNIVERSITY.
Just expanded secondary school equivalents... And that's why we are predominantly unemployable.

Wen Nigerian graduates get, the firm that hired them still spend from a few thousands, hundreds of thousands or millions training them.

Don't u know why u see expatriates everywhere u look in nigeria

If you wish to carry the discussion further, define theory.

Meanwhile, that expatriates work in a country does not mean the higher level education in that country is crap. There're many reasons why firms bring in foreigners to work domestically and this cannot be used to gauge the standard of education in a country..

I thought I was going to see something like this by Alpontif

"There are first class people, and there are First class people. Real First Class Graduates have had Consistent A level results since there Kindergaten days. They are the ones that had A's throughout their primary and secondary education. They have A's in their WAEC and score between 290 and 380 in their jamb. In other words, Real First class people have academic brilliance in their Blood, and personality..and they usually, without too much effort make Outstanding---not borderline, first class in the University. These are the guys you see having 4.7-5.0...or in some rare cases..4.6.

The other First class guys are the ones who studied extremely very very very hard in the University, just to enter into that First class range, their O level, Secondary and Primary Education results is not usually stellar....and their First class CGPA usually rarely exceeds 4.5-4.59.

The previous First class guys are the True First class people with very high IQs....They rarely fail aptitude tests. The Second class of First class guys, have to be prepared for every test, else they fail it. They are the types that will always be looking for past questions on aptitude tests...which is basically a measure of Intelligence.

One way to know a Real first class guy from a swotter-First class is to ask any of them to teach you fourier transforms years after they have studied it last. Without blinking, a real first class guy will start teaching you IMMEDIATELY...the swotter first class guy, has to go and revise , before he can teach you.

That is how you know First class people, therefore if you are truly a first class material, you do not need to become Jesus Christ before you graduate as a top of the class First Class graduate."

I belong to the second class of those first class guys

OND expatriates mainly are the ones that work in nigeria. They have the skill, we don't.

Wen we do, We will know.

Meanwhile,...

First class degree holders who graduated in the last 5 years (maximum) and looking to pursue foreign graduate studies should contact me. I'm happy to provide guidance. Final call for the year..

Good luck people. First class is still a noble achievement if you can. Don't let somebody deceive you.

you made sense until you tried turning the table around to favour public grad who are mostly guilty of the bold part.
Are you telling me covenant allows bribing, cheating, phones, blackmail to pass 50% of workload? That sounds like uniben, unilag, or lautech.
As a matter of fact the average public uni grad has about 6 years to study 4years course (lesser workload) unlike private uni.
are you minding him. People tend to talk ill of any system they are not conversant with. Either of the types of graduates stipulated by the op can come from anywhere

what we don't know there is applied science and research( theory) those theoretical analysis don't come from the street they come from research. So theory help

thank you. They just keep hammering on theory this theory that without knowing that that is the basis of science...or o they think planes fly just because some materials are constructed and put together. Forgetting the design processes..aerodynamics..fluid mechanics and power. The painful part is that this people think that repairing a damaged vehicle is the engineering one studied... In advance countries there are engineers and.. technologist as well as technician and craftmen.

let me share my story...Back then in school, there was this girl who was always topping the class...its even surprising because it was one of the engineering courses. She was so keen in getting her grades and coming out with first class..well after the project defense she was summoned by the school senate to ascertain her level of understanding aside the academic grades.....it was a rude shock because she knew nothing else apart from engineering courses.Several questions were asked aside engineering and general life...she couldn't answer well. Her level of understanding about life was so so low.
Well she eventually left the university with her first class....only for me to hear that she spent over 2 years at home without a job.She couldn't fit into the society...she was so conscious of her grades that she didnt pay attention to other aspects of human living.
The last time i saw her in the east....i was not impressed and i felt so bad .

To my greatest surprised, the university didn't offer her any lecturing job as the usual case.
They didnt see qualities in her.

Bottom line....while going after academic pursuit....prepare for life after school and equip yourself to face the world beyond the walls of the higher institution.
babes, your comment make sense die. This what the Japanese refer to as yoi shinai, yoi kangai.

This point is very valid.
That is why in the West, Schools of medicine, dentistry, etc interview each candidate long-listed for possible admission. A massive job but deemed imperative.

Surprisingly, very little is asked about academic ability. You will have proven that stellar grades already. And they have it on record.
They focus on your personality, interpersonal skills, life experience, hobbies, knowledge of foreign languages, record of involvement in charitable, volunteer or community service. Better still if have been in a care home or hospital environment or the sick or homeless people of some kind.

Basically trying to recruit people who are more rounded instead of just bookworms only. It enables candidates prepared for the profession to be admitted, not just those pushed by parents or who just have top grades without passion for it.

This can be a big ask if people interviewed are under age 20.

This increasing focus on matters in addition to academic brilliance has seen the age of medical students increase dramatically. With many now holding MSc or PhD before returning to study medicine.

Guy, I wanted to ask what are you saying, but that would be rude, not okay. I actually logged in because of you.

Contrary to what you believe, there are many non-straight A's students in high school and primary school that went ahead to become the best graduating students at their departments or entire school. I have worked with so many people on Nairaland, I've seen many things, personal experience and from the younger generation..Your first sentence will hardly fit real life data if you put it to test. There are very many above average students at primary/secondary school who went on to achieve GPA's in the neighbourhood of what you termed real first class. On the contrary, there are excellent students at primary/secondary level who went on to make a weak first class, 2:1 or even lower. Your point connotes that those making top, top GPA at uni were the excellent ones in high school. Data doesn't support this. You cannot draw the conclusion you're trying to draw. I've seen so much to accept such conclusion..Perhapsthis post of mine will help you motivate the above average high school students you know that they can be excellent at university and get the best grades...

So, average/below average/above average high school students, don't think you can't come tops in your class at university level. Perhaps you were average in high school because you studied wrongly or didn't have the academic guidance that the more privileged ones had. Many students attended secondary schools where all they do is write notes written on the board and many of these students hardly did problem solving sessions, e.g past questions, exercises etc. They were not exposed enough and tried to read and read what the teacher wrote on the board for them to copy. Of course, such students would hardly achieve the grades that befit their academic gifts, even if they are seriously gifted academically..But such students get to the university and it's another ball game entirely. Some of them were even more gifted than their highly performing age mates in other high schools but didn't have the same exposure....I remember in those days in unilag when some brough 8 A1 during registration, lol. We were dodging our own occasional A, more B's and C's...4 years later, another story was told.
grin grin, I can relate to the Unilag story , kai, Unilag is a change of destinies aswear grin grin

Don't get me wrong, degrees are needed. School education is needed but it doesn't stop there. What good is the knowledge acquired if it does not provide practical solutions to problems on ground.

Nigerians just like to acquire all kinds of certification on paper & usually there's barely or absolutely no application of the 'knowledge' behind these certificates to real life situations....so what's the use?

If the knowledge from the worship of paper certificates in Nigeria(like we do) were anything worthy, Nigeria won't be as messed up as it is. You see? Nigeria is chaotic today cos our environment doesn't recognize our many degree certificates.....it will only be able to recognize practical application of the knowledge.

Corrupt tendencies happen in both private and public institutions.
Lets be realistic here. It is easier to get a flawed First Class degree from a private university than a public one. What you get at best in a public University (when you compromise the system) is a second class upper in most cases.
Also, I didn't insinuate that all private universities are culpable. So the issue of you citing CU is unnecessary.
You made sense until you brought up private uni.

Any first class with no practicals on his or her knowledge in real life remains a half baked first class to me anywhere any day.
