Ilovemystate:In July 2006, Ogunlesi started the private equity firm, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a joint venture whose initial investors included Credit Suisse and General Electric. He currently serves as Chairman and Managing Partner. In 2006, GIP bought London City Airport. In 2009, GIP acquired the majority in London Gatwick Airport in a deal worth £1.455 billion. The Nigerian press has given him the nickname, "The Man Who Bought Gatwick Airport."[6] GIP also owns Edinburgh Airport, which they bought in 2012. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adebayo_Ogunlesi https://www.google.com.ng/url?url=https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Africa_Cup_of_Nations Global_Infrastructure_Partners&rct=j&sa=U&ved=0ahUKEwjGppGXhJDVAhXOJVAKHdS9AzIQmhMIQzAF&q=global+infrastructures+partners&usg=AFQjCNFrTvM7ObhGFi8EwEz7YsLUR-0yaQ |

mercyville:Abeg make we hear word. This is suppose to be your thread, isn't it? Most Igbos would just walk past it. It wasn't meant to be a competition until you started mentioning us. This should be a playing ground for Yorubas but what did we have here, a few Igbos still kicking asses and you showing us how you produced shoes, ororo and tissue papers... Something we had quit celebrating about 25 years ago. However, beyond all that, I wish we all promote this kind of healthy competition... |

Meet the Boss: Tunji Olowolafe, chairman, GZ Industries by Dinfin Mulupi on '28 March 2014' Tunji Olowolafe, chairman, GZ Industries (Nigeria) GZI chairman Dr Tunji Olowolafe GZI chairman Dr Tunji Olowolafe Meet the Boss is a How we made it in Africa interview series in which we pose the same 10 questions to business leaders across the continent. 1. What was your first job? I was a medical doctor. I decided to stop practicing medicine in 1988 and I went into private equity just out of interest. I found it interesting. 2. Who has had the biggest impact on your career and why? My grandmother. She lived with us and she always told me about hard work and ethics. Actually, the way she said it was three H’s: hard work, humility and honesty. She could not speak English so she said it in our local language (Yoruba) all the time. She sang it in different ways and told it in stories in different ways. She brought me up and was my role model. 3. What parts of your job keep you awake at night? Trying to achieve what I want to do tomorrow. I am always awake because I want to achieve all the time. 4. What are the top reasons why you have been successful in business? Honestly, I am not sure. I just do my best every day. Honestly, I have not discovered myself yet. I don’t even know what my talents are. But I just know that… most people that I collaborate with are smarter and deeper than me. 5. What are the best things about your country, Nigeria? Vibrance. Nigeria is the best place to be in the world. There are very creative and sociable people. They understand life and they live life. 6. And the worst? We have not taken our potential to where it should be. That is a pain but it will happen. 7. Your future career plans? I want to continue to invest in Africa. Nothing more. 8. How do you relax? I do exercise. I jog. I do yoga. I run and I read. 9. What is your message to Africa’s young aspiring businesspeople and entrepreneurs? Hard work and diligence are standards they need every day. They should collaborate with others to accomplish their goals. They should pursue what they find interesting, not what parents think they should do. They should also be diverse and open-minded to embark on different things when opportunities emerge and the call of nature beckons. 10. How can Africa realise its full potential? By ensuring we have democracy, rule of law and quality education. We need to educate all our people. That way we will achieve true freedom and prosperity. Dr Tunji Olowolafe is the chairman of GZ Industries (GZI), West Africa’s only aluminium can manufacturer. The Nigerian company manufacturers 1.2bn cans annually for sale to Guinness, Coca-Cola, Heineken and SABMiller. Olowolafe quit medical practice to venture into private equity. http://www.howwemadeitinafrica.com/meet-the-boss-tunji-olowolafe-chairman-gz-industries/. |

Ekealterego:Mouth does not win a competition or war but plan, strategy, action and facing the realties do.Anybody who wants to know who produces or owns companies more than the other between Yorubas and Igbos should just read from page one slowly and would be amazed and know why Yoruba or SW is the 3rd economy in Africa...such big biznesses some I know and beleive were owned by Oyinbos before but now I know better .This thread is really an eye opener especially for me but I hope the Igbos are not keeping back some companies which might overturn this landslide victory for the Yorubas. All said I think the govt should help Innoson because he has a very big dream and I think the sky is the limit if he can get it right.I really enjoyed this thread.Yorubas have really locked down the Nigerian economy..WOW!. |

Ilovemystate:Point of correction. Oando was started by 3 guys: Jubril Wale Tinubu, Omamofe Boyo and Jite Okokloko. Their start up was called Ocean and Oil holdings and it was very successful from inception. They were engaged in bulk trading of petroleum products cargo for several years and also owned a number of vessels. ![]() When govt decided to sell the old Unipetrol, Wale and his team made an audacious bid for it, and bought it with a loan from a consortium of banks. Unipetrol was then renamed Oando. The boys also bought the downstream arm of Agip and merged it with their business. There was no Ibori input at that time. ![]() Ibori only bought a few shares many years later, when Oando listed some of their shares for sale on the floor of the exchange, as they were trying to raise additional funds for expansion. Even at that, he still remains a minority shareholder, and these boys can pay him off at anytime in order to reclaim their shares. He did not help them set up Oando, in any shape, manner or form. Heck, he was not even there when the boys put it together from scratch! Understand? In 1994, Wale Tinubu decided to venture into the oil and gas business leading to his co-founding of Ocean and Oil Limited with Omamofe Boyo and Onajite Okoloko. In fact, some sources say that Ibori only owns 443 shares of Oando, and not the 30% he was claimed to have held. The Group Chief Executive, Oando Plc, Mr Wale Tinubu, on Friday said the company would publish names of shareholders on its web site to ensure sustainable corporate governance. |

Ilovemystate:You are very funny. Your research is incomplete. Who owns Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP)? Who is the founder of the firm? And who has been managing and running it? And where were you in 2006 when that same firm bought over Gatwick Airport, in what was dubbed "a landmark deal?" Do you even know the relationship between Ivy holdco and GIP?Nobody denies the fact that GIP does not have additional shareholders. Heck, managing other people's funds is what they do for a living, in the same way a bank manages the funds of its customers, in order to make a profit. In early 2016, GIP sold London City Airport, their first acquisition which they had bought for an estimated £750million in 2006 from Dermot Desmond, the Irish financier, to Canadian pension fund investors for an estimated £2 billion, more than doubling the initial investment by the firm and its partners. https://www.ft.com/content/2d675756-dbe6-11e5-a72f-1e7744c66818?mhq5j=e1 Adebayo "Bayo" O. Ogunlesi, JD (born December 20, 1953) is a Nigerian-born lawyer and investment banker. Ogunlesi is currently Chairman and Managing Partner at the private equity firm, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). Ogunlesi was the former head of Global Investment Banking at Credit Suisse First Boston, before being promoted to Chief Client Officer and Executive Vice Chairman. Despite his long sojourn in Europe and America, Ogunlesi still manages to stay abreast of developments in Africa. He has helped champion the African economic renaissance and in 2009 was appointed non-executive chairman of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), a financial institution set up to revamp Africa’s critical infrastructure and invest in key sectors of the continent’s economy. Global Infrastructure Partners, founded in 2006, now manages about $40 billion in assets ranging from ports and pipelines to London’s Gatwick Airport, a liquefied petroleum gas storage facility in Visakhapatnam, India, and a vast wind farm in the North Sea. Over 10 years, GIP has expanded its roster of backers to include some of the world’s biggest sovereign funds and a slate of U.S. pensions. The firm operates three funds. GIP I raised $5.7 billion in 2008. GIP II closed in 2012 with $8.3 billion. In January it announced its latest and largest pool, a $15.8 billion fund, the largest-ever dedicated to infrastructure.
