What has seaports got to do with VATs? VAT is a consumption tax, which is highly correlated with purchasing power, no? Tax experts, your inputs will be appreciated here.

Off the top of my head, I'll mention cities that have no significant body of navigable water, yet they're economic powerhouse in their own right: In US-Phoenix, Denver, Atlanta, Dallas, Orlando, Las Vegas; In Europe: London, Madrid, Warsaw. In south/central america: Sao Paolo, Mexico City, In China: Beijing. You should envision more than seaports for your region if you want your region to be competitive in the 21st century. Seaports drive commerce, true; but technology is roaring engine of growth.

You undermine the achievement of Lagos if you reduced it's success story to mere seaports, and Lagos can do even better than it already has.
A lot of these hungry fanyogo boys are illiterate, I tell you.

The whole SE can not boast of 2% of the total VAT. I wonder which area they actually contribute to national growth in that region.
The same SE the Federal government and Yoruba people are ready to go to war with just to make sure they remain in Nigeria. Simply pathetic!!!!

Loooool.

I have never seen a country spending money fighting to keep a useless region.

The joke is on you.

You Flattiess keep using this same line thinking everyone on NL are stupid and ignorant enough to keep swallowing your lies and propaganda.

These are pictures from the port at PH/Onne. There is nothing stopping Igbos from using it if they wanted to. The success of Lagos and the West is much more deeper than having just a seaport. What many of you don't even know is that the port in Lagos is MUCH SMALLER than what Nigeria actually needs, and less than half of foreign products in the country come through Lagos. Most come from the Cotonou, Lome and Tema ports in Benin, Togo and Ghana, YET Lagos is thriving just fine.

Use PH/Onne port Ndigbo. It is working and functioning just fine. No be by force to come Ragos!

Onne port is not dead at all. It is still very much alive. It receives oil & gas cargoes on a regular basis. The only problem is that the importers from the SE refuse to use it for non-oil imports. They are attached to Lagos ports...
cos since the Onne port was concessioned, it became very expensive to import non oil commodities tro it

...will all humility,i strongly disagree with the finance minister. 1st. what is VAT?..ans..its is the name given to taxes on goods and services produced in a country and expecially consumed within the country.. now, let's analyse. does she mean to say that lagos state now consume more goods than p.h delta and say edo put 2geda?...does sh min that lagos consumes more than the entire south east? or even more than kano and kaunas put 2geda?......it is evidently clear that the one gathering the data on the economy are mistakenly double counting...what I mean is that in thier calculations, they attribute VAT of good produced in lagos to lagos mindless of the fact that most of these goods are consumed else where...if for example mtn recharge card of 100billion is produced in lag and a worth of 81billion of recharge card is distributed to the entire nation, where do you think the generated VAT should be attributed to?...lagos?...I guess that s where our honourable minister might be mistaken...the numbers doesn't match.if lagos contains a population of about 14million of nigrria's 180 million how then does it consume more than an entire region which isn't knw of for high poverty rate
This is the sort of comment I was expecting to read on the first page.Sadly tribal e-warriors ruined the whole conversation with their usual "my Lagos", "we developed Lagos, "leave South West" useless childish comments. The ministers assumption is clearly mistaken given the reasons u just highlighted. There's no way more goods will be consumed in Lagos than all the other thirty six states combined.

FG knows what they are doing, they should create port in Warri and PH and see how Lagos becomes broke. instead of mocking SE why not think of way to improve the academic activities of the region I. e by suggesting a port that will be close to the region and see how fast they develop.

That's where you get it wrong. How much is generated in Lagos as a result of the ports in Lagos and who do the bulk of importation there? Retailing serves the local populace and retailers are small players in thebscheme of things. Lagos is the trading hub for West Africa and when I tell you Igbo commerce contributes a lot to Lagos I don't include those retailers in my calculation. Igbos are the major importers of goods in Lagos and most if the imported goods leave Lagos via wholesale distribution channels.

It's people like you that were asking how those unknown Igbos people were able to afford $1M as ransom to Evans. I just laughed on seeing those comments. There are 100s of thousands of Igbos traders who can conveniently part with that in Lagos and I know plenty personally.

Let's look at the pharmaceutical industry/market in Lagos; the Igbos run this multi billion dollar industry almost as a monopoly. Some if them are;

Emzor
Greenlife
Orange Drugs
Elbe
M & B
Neimeth
Embassy
Vixa
Richy Gold
Neros
Clarion Medicals
Geneith global
Beta Drugs
Jopan
Maydon (one of Evans victims)
Jubilee
Award Global
Agary
E-Chuks
Etc. These are all big time players in the industry so please when I talk of commerce, I make no reference to retailers.
Then ship those things via PH ports or onitsha or WHATEVER and create one no man's land in your side too.

Open up the seaports in Rivers, Delta, Cross River state and see if the VAT will not increase, the Lagos we see is because of the see ports and the airport, there's nothing special about Lagos, all the. Coastal states had same value both they neglected them and focused only on Lagos, but if the Govt should open up all the ports in the Niger Delta, you would experience a lot of growth.
I do not really know what is wring with the FG..

This report is useless because it is the FG that empowered only Lagos to function like that.

Is it only Lagos that has waterways in Nigeria.. ?

And what is the Percentage Contribution of the VAT to total national income viz a viz Crude oil ?

Most of you igbos are sick in the head. You claim FG should create adversaries to diversify income n benefit to Lagos it as done that Nigeria as about 4 international Airport now but Lagos is still the number one. The same goes for seaport with Onne Calabar n PH yet known is able to rival Lagos soon Igbo madness will drive them to ask FG to close down every industry in Lagos so theirs can grow. Igbo have a formidable adversary in Yoruba and find the competition to demanding to challenge thus the reason for the cries of marginalisation.

Like i said to the previous guy stupidity clerly does not know tribe.

What is IGR? Nobody shares IGR so I dont understand what relevance east or North's IGR has to SW.

VAT is not IGR! You keep all your IGR you send VAT to the center. So because some states in the North have a higher IGR than some states in the south does not mean they are contributing....states keep ALL their IGR!!!!

Let me explain something to you. The reason why VAT is highest in Lagos and Abuja is because vat is paid by registered companies and most companies have their head offices in Lagos or Abuja even when their major operations are elsewhere...it's a simple as that. When did you buy spare parts from Emeka in isolo and saw VAT on your receipt, do you pay VAt when Jelili your mechanic brings bill for work on your car do you see vat, does he even give you receipt?
Those with the least IGR are least viable and less likely to survive on their own hence dependence of FG allocation
