Long before people new the periodic table they were smelting iron from ore and producing knifes, swords, and axes; making beer from fermented grain; distilling alcohol; producing soap and paints and dyes for coloring cloth. When gun powder (the infamous black powder) was invented the chinese didn't know what was the periodic table.

Yet today we have chemical engineers and phd chemists who cannot make this simple substances without using sophisticated imported apparatus. But our grandmothers in village can still 'cook' soap. Our 'educated' chemists must import chemicals to produce paints but dyes were commonplace here long before the whites stepped foot on Africa. Local Blacksmiths were smelting ore into iron with crude earth furnaces, yet you tell me without imported factory you cannot produce iron.

Stop rote science. Science is a practical endeavor. You dont learn science as you will literature or history. Even history has to be enacted sometimes for it to sink in.

So our Intro tech teacher ( Mr Benshak-God rest his soul) was passing by and when he noticed, he came in and tot us a song he learnt when he was in school. I ll recite and hope it helps someone. The word "perhaps" does not belong in that sentence. You certainly are deeply ignorant of what you speak of. Rote learning and memorization are hardly the same thing. In fact, they're very incomparable. What you should have asked is whether learning by rote memorization is similar to learning by way of creative, personalized mnemonics. To that I would have answered no, 'cause the latter is by far the more superior means of learning.

I sense you harbour a slight disregard for memorization, perhaps you out of ignorance think the art of memory is an unnecessary and futile labour? Well, you couldn't be more wrong. Memory is a required staple if one is to learn. Even much further, if one is to apply all that has been learnt, it's imperative that one's powers of recall must nearly be infallible.

Quiz yourself: would you have been able to post on Nairaland if you hadn't "remembered" your log-in details? i.e. your username and password.
The business of memorization is as noble as it is necessary, the mode by which it is executed are where the troubles lie, and not in the very art itself.

So, rest your tirade against that beautiful art of memory and go memorize something today. A sonnet would be a good place to start.
