Jathniel
I followed Elliot to the living room.
“What is it Jane?” He asked her.
“Stay with me.” She pouted her small lips. I chuckled and Elliot turned to me. He rolled his eyes and sat with her. I went back to the kitchen laughing and narrated what happened to mum.
“He would have been used to all this now if…”
“Mum” I cut in “I understand what you mean but you should cut him some slack. You can’t spend the rest of your life blaming a grieving man.”
“Jathniel,your brother isn’t grieving anymore.”
“He is mum. Jane is a constant reminder of the times he spent with Tasha. I understand why he avoids her even though I don’t support his actions.”
“I don’t totally agree with you but I’m not in the mood for this discussion Jathniel.”
“Alright mum. I’ll be going out soon.” I strode out of the kitchen to place a call to Jamille.

Jamille
“Hello.” I picked the call without looking at the caller I.D.
“And she’s still in bed by 8a.m.”
The sleep fled my eyes. “Niel,I’m not sleeping.”
“Okay and yet your voice sounds so small and weak.” He mimicked me.
“I slept late last night. Mum,dad and I had a lot to talk about last night.”
“Good morning sunshine and congratulations on your confession.”
“Good morning darlin’ “
“How many hours will it take you to get ready for me?”
“Niel hours? That’s so unfair to me na.”
“You’re a woman and y’all take so long to get ready.”
“I’ll prove you wrong. Be here in thirty minutes.”
“Game on.” He replied and I hung up. The gravity of what I said just stared hard at me.
“Thirty minutes, here we come.” I said to myself as I jumped off the bed and rushed into the bathroom. I had a quick shower. Dressing up was the issue. I finally settled for a black and white short sleeved dress that stopped at my knees. I knew better than to wear something above my knees, mum would slaughter me. I let my braids fall at my back. I used a pink hair band to keep them from falling to my face and I slipped my feet into my pink shoes. I carried a pink bag containing the toys I got for Tristan and Gloria. Twenty five minutes were gone already. I left my room for the kitchen.
“Good morning mum.” I hugged her from behind.
“Mille dear, good morning. I hope you slept well.”
“Yes mum. I’m sorry that you had to prepare breakfast alone.” I released her and she turned to face me.
“It’s okay, are you ready to go?”
“Yeah,Jathniel’s coming over soon.” The doorbell rang “And he’s here already.”
I went to open the door. “You’re three minutes late.”
“And you’re done surprisingly.” We giggled.
“Come inside jare. Mum’s in the kitchen.”
“And dad?”
“He’s still sleeping.” He went to the kitchen to meet mum. Mum convinced him to have breakfast with me. She served us rice and fish stew with homemade fruit juice.
“I’ll leave you guys to your food now. I’m going to have a shower so you may not see me before you leave but we’ll meet up in the hospital.”
“Alright momma,bye.”
“Bye ma.”
“Alright my dears. Take care okay?”
“Sure thing.” I said and she left.
“How’s Jane and everyone else at home?”
“Jane’s fine.” He began laughing and almost choked on his food.
“What’s that na? Take water jare.”
“Thanks. I just remembered what Jane did to Elliot last night.”
“Tell me.” He narrated the whole story to me and I couldn’t stop laughing. When we were done, I packed the plates and washed them before we left.
Niel insisted we took selfies in the car. I made him promise he wouldn’t post any of them on social media. It was a tough battle but I won as always. He knew I enjoyed my private life.
I called Kara and she gave me directions to the hospital. We got there sooner than I expected. I was moved to tears when I saw Kara coming out of the building with Tristan in a wheelchair.
“Tristan! Oh my baby.” I went to him.
“Aunty Jam Jam.” He squealed in delight.
“My love.” I bent to his level and hugged him. Tears rolled down my cheeks. I never thought his situation had gotten so bad.
“Let me hug mummy too dear.” I detached myself from him and hugged Kara. “I’ve missed you sis.”
“Me too Mille.” When we disentangled,I noticed she was crying too.
“It’s okay honey,he’ll be fine.” She nodded.
“Did you come alone?” She asked.
“No,Niel went further in to park his car. Why is he outside?”
“Doctor said he shouldn’t just stay inside all day. I take him around the compound every morning and evening. This compound is big so there’s enough space for movement. Oh! See Jathniel.”She pointed behind me.
“Hey champ.” Jathniel said to Tristan.
“Uncle Nail.” We laughed.
“So,he still calls you ‘nail’.” I said.
“My dear,na so I see am.” Niel replied. Tristan had his own version of Niel and it always made everyone laugh just like aunty Jam Jam still remained funny to us.
“Kara,I’ll walk him around.” I volunteered.
“Thanks,I’ll just tag along then.” We began our walk. True to her words, the compound was big.
“I’ll join you guys later. I need to see Eric.” Jathniel announced and made to go inside when Tristan held his trousers.
“Uncle Nail are you going?”
“No champ. I’ll be right back. I want to see your daddy.”
“Okay.” He let go of him.
“Hey baby. I forgot to give you your toys.”
“Yayy! Toys mummy.” He was so excited. I brought out his toy car and a teddy bear for him.
“Thank you Aunty Jam.”
“Okay,he has subtracted one Jam from the name.” His mum commented and we laughed.
“You’re welcome love. Let’s continue our walk.”
“How are you Mille?”
“I’m fine o my sister. Lagos hustling no be here.”
“Eya and I know you don’t like those kind of places.”
“Yeah. How is Eric?”
“Mille,he’s inside there. “
“Kara,so mum was right. He’s also an accident victim. You know that right?”
“Why is everyone telling me that? I can clearly see it.”
“No,you’re clearly seeing with your two physical eyes. You’re blinding your mind’s eye from seeing that he’s suffering.”
“Mille,I thought you would understand me. He almost killed my only son.”
“It wasn’t deliberate Kara, why would he want to kill his own son?” We stopped under a big tree and sat on the pavement while Tristan was carried away with his new car.
“It wasn’t deliberate but it could have been prevented. How could he be making a call and attempting to cross a road with my son? I know Eric and he knows too that he doesn’t have the gift of concentrating on two things at a time. Why did he decide to experiment it again with my son?”
“I understand how you feel Kara.” She had started crying again.
“No,you don’t. It’s easier said than experienced.”
“Mummy are you crying?” Tristan cut in.
“No,she’s not. Something entered your mummy’s eyes.”
“Sorry mummy.”
“Thanks baby.” She turned back to me. “As I was saying Mille, you don’t understand what it means to hear that the child you carried for nine months with all the stigma of being a single mother may never be able to walk again. It’s painful Mille and everybody is busy shouting ‘It’s not his fault, forgive him.’ To hell with forgiveness Mille. I used to think it was easy but it isn’t and I’d rather stick to my own way. I don’t care if the world judges me Mille. If you talk to him, better tell him that if my son can’t walk eventually,I’ll surely deal with him.”
“Kara, that’s too harsh. I’ve never known you to be like this.”
“Don’t worry Mille. I haven’t changed much, it’s only one layer of me that has changed because of Eric.”
“Sincerely Kara,I don’t know what to say.”
“I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me.” Her face transformed within seconds. She now carried a bold face and I wondered whether this was the same Kara that was crying minutes ago

Aunty Kara Kara the woman of different phases please take it easy don't make a decision you will later regret.
Anger clouds judgement just like dark saturates the cloud and then comes the rain after which a bright weather.
Re: Hidden Diamonds by Emperor380(m): 4:05pm On Aug 02, 2017
Kara should pls be easy on herself and Eric, I know that it ain't easy but she should no that no father will deliberately hurt his child that bad...I think she will be doing a lot of gud to Eric if she stops blaming him for the unintentional circumstance

Liz
“I understand Brian. I just don’t want you to lose hope yet.”
“I only have few years to live Liz. It’s better to start accepting it from now.”
I sighed. How would I make him stop saying rubbish about dying? He came over to the house after Mille had left. It wasn’t the first time we were talking about his condition and I was certain it wouldn’t be the last. He insisted on taking me to the hospital since Liam had to rush to work so we were in the car together.
“God can do anything Brian.”
“When will you stop being so religious Liz? It’s part of the plan of life to die.”
“And when will you go back to trusting God? Ever since Kimberly died, you’ve been completely uninterested in God and His ways.”
“I’m a busy and dying man Liz. I don’t have such luxury.”
“You’re not dying Brian. Don’t say it again.” I yelled and he looked at me in shock. “I didn’t mean to shout but you’re getting on my nerves with all these death talk.”
“It’s alright Liz. You don’t know how I feel because you’re not the one suffering from cancer.”
“I’m still praying for you. Nothing is gonna happen to you.”
“I hope so. So you said Mille’s in town?”
“Yeah. She’s at the hospital, you’ll see her.”
“Okay. I haven’t really been the best of fathers to her. Our relationship is terribly strained.”
“I don’t think she has a problem with you. Mille isn’t like that.”
“Maybe. I was surprised when she told me her introduction ceremony will be at our house.”
“Why the surprise? Aren’t you her father anymore?”
“I am, but I just thought she would be more comfortable doing it at your place.”
“No, Mille would never do that. You’re a big man oh. See my junior brother, Brian is giving out his daughter’s hand in marriage.”
He smiled “And my big sister is a grandmother already.”
“God has been kind to our family Brian. All of us ended up well, even me of all people.”
“Yeah. I remember when you were an outcast. You used to be bloody in those days.” He laughed and I joined him.
“Badly bloody. Nobody expected that anything good could come out of me.”
“But you’re a wonderful mother of two girls.”
“Hmmm.”
“What is weighing on your mind Liz?”
“It’s my girls. I feel like I’ve failed.”
“And how is that?”
“I’ve been able to get over the fact that Kara has a child out of wedlock. What bothers me is how she is clinging to the past. You know Tristan was with his dad when the accident happened right?”
“Yeah, you told me he was making a phone call.”
“Exactly. Kara still believes it’s all his fault. She doesn’t even talk to him and the young man is having a very hard time. She’s become very stubborn and set in her ways. She’s not even dreaming of forgiving him anytime soon. As for Rachel, she doesn’t want to get married at all. She has frustrated all the men that have come her way. I mean what kind of funny decision is that? These girls are giving me headache without knowing it. I fear that she’s attracted to females but she has always denied it.”
“Liz,your thoughts are straying too far.Should I still drive forward?” He asked.
“Take this turn. We’re close.”
“Okay. As I was saying, don’t let your thoughts go too far Liz.Give them time. I know you’re concerned just like any mother would be.”
“I hope God does something for me.”
“Kara is hurting, you know that right?”
“I know but does it mean she should take it this far? Even Liam that didn’t want anything to do with the guy has forgiven him o but Kara is still swimming in unforgiveness. Brian, will you help me talk to her? Maybe she’ll listen to you.” We had arrived the hospital but were still sitting in the car
“I’m sorry sis but I won’t. You all are putting her under pressure Liz, that’s what you don’t realize. Let her be, give her space and advice the young man to do same. I didn’t say you should stop showing her love. Love her all you can but avoid anything that’ll make her heart more stiff than it is already.”
“I never thought of it that way. Thank you Brian.”
“You’re always welcome. I’ve been a foolish father for so long and now,I’ve finally come out of my foolishness with a few lessons.”
“You’re still a great father Brian. Let’s go see them.” We went out of the car.
We met Jathniel trying to place Tristan on the bed.
“See grandma and another grandpa.” The little boy spotted us immediately we stepped in.
“Sweet baby.”I went to him. There was a round of hugs and greetings in the room.
“Where did you take him to?” Brian asked.
“We went for his morning walk uncle.” Kara replied.
“Alright. Big guy how are you?” He directed his question to Tristan.
“Fine grandpa. See my toys.” He displayed his new toys for us to see.
“They’re so nice darling. Who got them for you?” I asked.
“Aunty Jam Jam.” He replied proudly causing everyone to smile. I wasn’t surprised that he was still so lively. He took after both parents there. He rarely cried even when he was still very little.
“I brought food for you. I know you’ve taken breakfast at the hospital canteen already.”
“Yes mum but I’ll feed him again.”
“Sorry for taking so long to get here. Your uncle isn’t staying long so you’ll follow him home to rest a while.”
“Okay mum. How many food flasks did you bring?” She asked while searching the bag.
“The other one is for Eric. Let me go and give it to him.” I said and she remained indifferent. I took the extra flask to the next room. He was moved there on Kara’s request. At first,he didn’t want to stay apart from his son but to avoid embarrassment from Kara, he moved.
I knocked and I heard him say “Come in.”
“Good morning Eric.”
“Good morning ma. I didn’t know you were around.” He wasn’t lying down. His back was supported with pillows on the bed and he still had a bandage around his head.
“I just came few minutes ago. How are you dear?” I sat on the chair beside his bed.
“I’m fine ma. How’s daddy?”
“He’s fine. He’ll come later today.”
“Okay ma.”
“I brought food for you. I…”
“Hello Eric.” Mille walked in.
“Welcome Jamille. How are you?”
“I’m the one supposed to be asking you that Eric. I’m alright though.”
“I’m fine too. I’m recovering fast though I have to deal with terrible headaches from time to time.”
“Sorry about that.” Mille said.
“Thanks.”
“Mille could you please excuse us? Eric and I need to talk.”
“Alright mum. Catch ya later Eric.” Mille strolled out of the room.
I didn’t say anything for some minutes.
“Is something wrong ma?”
“No…no nothing. I just needed to tell you something I think could help.”
“Is it about Kara?”
“Yes. I need you to let her be for a while.”
“I’m afraid I still don’t understand what you mean ma.”
“Don’t attempt to talk to her. Just leave her alone till she comes to you by herself.”
He sighed. “How do I make her forgive me if I leave her alone?”
“You really crave her forgiveness. Are you a Christian?”
“Yes ma. I became one after the accident. I even told her but she laughed me to scorn saying a leopard can never change its spots. I’m so broken right now ma. I knew I made a mistake once and almost put her life on hold but I’m now a different person.”
“You should try and understand that it’s a hard nut for her to swallow. Like I said earlier, just let her be. She’ll come around one day. Just pray for her.”
“I’ll wait ma.”
“That’s good. Is your sister coming today?”
“Yes but not now. Her husband is coming back from the States today so she’ll be here later.”
“Alright. In case I’m not here when she comes, send my regards to her.”
“I will ma.”
“Go ahead and eat your food.” He opened the food flask like a starved child.
“Hmm,this is tasty ma. Thank you.” He said as he took the first spoon.
“You’re welcome son.” He ate and I watched him quietly. He had changed a lot as he adjusted into being a real father to Tristan. What made me happy was that his family accepted Tristan as part of them. Kara made sure she allowed them access to him whenever they wanted but she didn’t associate much with them. She treated them even better than she treated Eric. I felt for him but there was nothing like stopping Kara from doing what she wanted.
“Alright Eric, I’ll be in the next room.”
“Okay ma. Thank you so much.”
“Thank God dear.” I exited the room and stepped into Tristan’s.
“Mum are you guys done?” Mille questioned as soon as I stepped into the room.
“Done with what?” Kara asked.
“Yeah Mille.” I ignored Kara’s question.
“Alright.” She pulled Jathniel with her despite his protests. I could see her father smile as he watched them. I went close to him.
“You wish Kimberly was here right?”
“Yeah. She would have been so happy to see that Mille could come out of her shell and is even getting married soon.”
“I’m sure she’s happy wherever she is.”
He went silent and I left him to stay with Tristan. As usual,Tristan started downloading lots of gist.
“I should be going Liz.”
“Kara, you should follow your uncle.”
“Baby,I’ll be back. Mummy needs to freshen up and rest okay?” She said to Tristan.
“Grandma are you going too?”
“No, I’m staying with my baby.” I caressed his hair.
“Okay mummy, go and buy meat pie for me.”
She laughed “Okay son. Bye baby.”
“Bye Tristan.” Brian waved.
“Bye mummy and another grandpa.”

Mille
“I understand. My sister can be hard when she wants to be but I believe she’ll come around.” I said, hoping it would comfort him.
“I understand. So you’re my boss’ fiancée.”
“Yeah. I never knew he was your boss.”
“I know you didn’t know but I’ve never seen you both together so I was surprised. If not for the accident, I wouldn’t have known till the wedding day.”
“This is actually the first time I’m coming here. I haven’t had time ever since and I didn’t even know you were an employee until Sharon told me last night.” Jathniel put in.
“Ah! I understand. Many of us haven’t actually seen you physically, we only know your face from the company magazine and a few business magazines. You have your way of sneaking in and out unnoticed.”
“Yeah. Once upon a time, almost everyone knew me and interacted with me but I stopped it when we expanded. Popularity is one thing I have always tried to run away from. I apologise though for not coming to see you early enough. I’ve heard your name several times as one of the most hardworking employees that Crystals is proud of.”
“I’m honoured to be at your service. I’ll resume work as soon as I’m discharged.”
“No,no,take your time and recover before you resume.”
“Thank you sir.”
“So you guys finally shooed me out of the conversation with all your company talk.” I pouted.
“Sorry sweetheart.” Niel said.
“My apologies Jamille.”
“It’s alright. I just wanted the attention jare.” They laughed. We talked for a while before announcing our departure. We had to leave to purchase some items for our introduction. I told Tristan I was leaving but I promised to be back again in the evening.
“So where are we going now?” Niel asked as he turned on the ignition.
“I wanna see how far my seamstress has gone with my clothes.”
“When did you give her the material?” He asked as we drove out of the compound.
“Niel why are you so talented in forgetting important stuff? I thought I told you mum gave it to her last week after I sent my measurement.”
“My bad, I think I remember something like that.”
“I’m proud of you.” I said
“Fine, fine, I’m sorry.”
“Apology accepted sweetheart. You know my seamstress’ place right?”
“Yeah. Like the back of my hand.”
“Alright dear.”
And so we drove to my seamstress’ place. She hadn’t finished my attire yet. It was to be a cream coloured lace blouse and a royal blue lace skirt with a wrapper on top. I didn’t have the strength to tie two wrappers so I opted for a skirt with one wrapper of same material on top.
“I assure you it’ll be ready by Wednesday.” She said.
“I hope so Imaobong. I seriously don’t want to be disappointed. I told you my introduction ceremony is on Saturday.”
“No problem.I’ll surely deliver. Let me parcel your husband’s own.”
“Okay.” I was happy that she had finished Niel’s own. She was a designer for both men and women and she always did a wonderful job. Her major flaw was delaying delivery but she had improved a bit.
“Here it is ma’am.”
“Thank you. Does he need to try it on?”
“No. I’m sure I got the measurements right.”
“Thank you. I’ll be back on Wednesday for mine.” With that I strolled out of her shop.
“What’s up babe?” Niel asked immediately I entered the car.
“She’s done with yours but mine is still ‘under construction’.”
He laughed “Under construction indeed. Where’s the next stop?”
“Market. I need to get rice, some tubers of yam, other food condiments and my shoes and accessories. Mum’s customers will supply whatever remains. After that,we should go to see Jane.”
“Alright my lady. Market here we come.” He drove to the market and walking around was so not funny. Niel didn’t even look at me twice when I asked him to enter the market with me. He just reclined on his seat and shut his eyes. Getting the food stuff wasn’t the issue but getting the shoes proved to be a herculean task. I needed cream-coloured shoes. The ones I saw were either looking too ancient or too low. I never imagined that cream-coloured shoes could be so rare.
Finally, I stopped at a boutique reluctantly and luckily,I found just what I wanted. I hurriedly paid for it as if the shoes would disappear. I got a truck pusher earlier to help me convey the heavy items I bought soI just led the way to the car. I was tired and dehydrated. I paid the guy off and woke the sleeping Niel up.
“Hey baby,you’re back.”
“Yeah. Wait a minute, let me buy water before I die.” I bought water from a nearby shop before coming back to the car.
“Sorry love. We’ll grab something to eat before heading to the house.” I narrated my whole ordeal to him during the ride and showed him the shoes. We stopped at an eatery true to his words. It’s not like I doubted his words anyway.
When we finally reached the house, there was serious yelling going on inside. Niel just put his head on the steering as he parked his car.
“They’re at it again.”
“Who?” I asked innocently.
“Elliot and my mum. They’ve been disagreeing seriously these days.”
“About what exactly?”
“Basically because she believes Elliot’s not acting like a true father. They’ve argued but it’s never gotten to the extent of yelling at each other.”
“Let’s go inside Niel.”
“Unfortunately, I don’t wanna till they’re through.”
“Come out jare.” I turned over to his side and dragged him till he gave in. When we stepped in, they were both in the dining room.
I expected him to say something reasonable but he said “Alright, you guys should just stop this. You’re embarrassing this family in front of my wife to be.”
I took that as a cue to announce my presence “Good afternoon mum and Elliot.”
“Good afternoon sweetie. Okay, I think I need a hug.” I smiled and walked up to her for a hug, waving at Elliot at the same time behind her. He responded with a wave too.
“You’re welcome. It’s been a while dear but at least you try to come home at intervals or communicate all the time with your family unlike some people I know.”
I smiled weakly. My instincts told me she was talking about Elliot.
“Mum, I recall your favourite son telling us not to embarrass ourselves in front of his wife.”
“Favourite son? Now where did that nonsense emerge from?” Niel fired back.
“I better go check on Jane.” I stylishly excused myself from the upcoming disaster. Bringing Niel out of the car turned out to be the worst mistake of the century. I went upstairs in search of Jane.
“Jane? Aunt Jam Jam’s here.” I heard her squeal and rush out immediately. Her face and hands were completely covered with paint.
“Aunt Jam Jam!” She hugged me with her messy hands and I imagined what my dress would look like after the hug.
“How are you baby?”
“I’m fine. Come and see my painting.” She pulled me to the study room. Mum had made a special section for her. She showed me what she did and it looked exactly like what a three year old could accomplish.
“Oh sweetheart,it’s so pretty. I love it.”
“Thank you aunty Jam Jam.” She motioned for me to bend down then she whispered “Where’s my new present?”
I laughed so hard. She knew I never came to visit after a long while without something new.
“Okay, we have to get you cleaned up first. Your new toys are dying to meet you. So what do you say?”
“I wanna shower Aunt Jam Jam so that I can meet my new toys.” I took her to he bathroom and gave her a nice shower. She showed me where her things were and I dressed her up. I removed the toys from my bag and handed them to her. I got her a baby doll and a toy kitchen set. She was more than happy. She pecked me over and over again till I thought my cheeks would sink.
Later on, when she came down from the high horse of excitement she said “Aunt Jam Jam , can I ask you a question?”
“Sure baby. You know you can ask me anything.”
“Am I a naughty girl?”
“Of course not baby.Where’d you get that from?”
“But daddy don’t like me.” My eyes widened in surprise.
