If we are to keep asking. There are so much question. Like one of my lecturer would say whenever we ask him how some formular came into existence. He would say "Gbabeskie" means "accept it that way".

A bachelor's degree (from Middle Latin baccalaureus) or baccalaureate (from Modern Latin baccalaureatus) is an undergraduate academic degree awarded by colleges and universities upon completion of a course of study lasting three to seven years (depending on institution and academic discipline). In some institutions and educational systems, some bachelor's degrees can only be taken as graduate or postgraduate degrees after a first degree has been completed. In countries with qualifications frameworks, bachelor's degrees are normally one of the major levels in the framework (sometimes two levels where non-honours and honours bachelor's degrees are considered separately), although some qualifications titled bachelor's degrees may be at other levels (e.g. MBBS) and some qualifications with non-bachelor's titles may be classified as bachelor's degrees (e.g. the Scottish MA and Canadian MD).

The term bachelor in the 12th century referred to a knight bachelor, who was too young or poor to gather vassals under his own banner. By the end of the 13th century, it was also used by junior members of guilds or universities. By folk etymology or wordplay, the word baccalaureus came to be associated with bacca lauri ("laurel berry"wink in reference to laurels being awarded for academic success or honours.[1]

Under the British system, and those influenced by it, undergraduate academic degrees are differentiated as either non-honours degrees (known variously as pass degrees, ordinary degrees or general degrees) or honours degrees, the latter sometimes denoted by the addition of "(Hons)" after the degree abbreviation.[2] An honours degree generally requires a higher academic standard than a pass degree, and in some systems an additional year of study beyond the non-honours bachelor's. In some countries, e.g. Australia, there is a "postgraduate" bachelor's honours degree, which may be taken as a consecutive academic degree, continuing on from the completion of a bachelor's degree program in the same field, or (in a similar manner to the UK system) as part of an integrated honours program.

Historically, there were three standards for academic qualification:

Bachelor, Master and Doctor

Bacheler (pronounced bash) was firstly the basic qualification for a knight. (The term knight bachelor is also used.) This was a young man who had learned how to bash people and had other attributes (mainly money and family) so that he did not have to work. However, a certain standard of use of arms had been achieved for him to receive this recognition. He had to do more in order to be a full knight with his own standard.

As not all young men of good families wanted to spend their time with swords, it began to be used for a man qualified in other areas, such as a Bachelor of Law, or just one of an age and income to be worth marrying.

The early versions of universities worked in Latin, so converted the English word to an invented Latin one of baccalaurus, which later led to the baccalaureate. (This is also basically a sort of Latin joke, referring to the laurel crown given to a winner.)

A higher level of proficiency was then required for someone to be pronounced a Master. Further achievements allowed some men to be considered sufficiently knowledgeable to be academic teachers, for which the Latin word Doctor (meaning teacher) was applied. This usually meant he had written a book on the subject.

Thus universities based on the Western Europe model have degrees of bachelor, master and doctor.

Basically, bachelor is the first level of adulthood in terms of becoming in man, so at this stage it is assumed that you have no experience of many things, so it is a stage of learning. This is what first degree stands for.

However, second degree is called masters and it's a stage of perfection. You are a master in a game or in life when you have gained a lot of experience.

Reason why they call the first bachelor is obviously becos back then more men are into education than women who were majorly known to take care of the home.

just read it was named after the laurel wreath the new graduate was crowned with, called the baccalaureate, Anglicised as bachelor. We use a mortar board now but the principle remains the same. Chamber's dictionary says it's also ultimately of doubtful origin though, so the sides are split.

Because bachelors have multiple women with different specifications. That's y they bombard us with multiple course units from different disciplines (some of which are irrelevant) during the B degree.

The word "Bachelor' comes from the Latin word 'baccalaureus' or 'baccalaureatus' which means "Junior member of the guild or night". Another meaning is "student of the first degree".

Because there were no feminists & feminazis then. tongue tongue

If not they would have lobbied for it to be called "Unmarried People's Degree". grin cheesy

Folks, your degree would have been UP. Sc, UPA, UP. Ed or UP. Tech instead of B.Sc, BA, B.Ed or B.Tech. grin cheesy cheesy

It actually came from Latin word "baccalaureus". Some call it baccalaurate. It just means first academic certificate. Not really about age or marital status originally. Though in practice people began its study in late teens.

Bac in some countries like France is equivalent to British A'level.
