The A to Z of this write up, being backed up by this excerpt quoted, has proven that APC governments have nothing to offer on Education.

PDP governments know the value of Education and relatively trying more than its political counterpart.
So you finally gotna job with PDP..... thank God for your life!

And the APC governments didn't loot?

Because the APC government looted means the PDP looting is not that relevant and they know the value of education while looting all the money that should have gone into education. Praise PDP!

Your logic is very strong!

What is the essence of performing well in WAEC and not going for further education into the University and just diverting into trade just like many people do in the SE.

University Education is the most important form of Formal education and that is the criteria we should be looking at here not basic secondary education.
For more than two decades southeast is leading in SSCE and JAMB it became clear to west since social media became powerful in Naija and exposing their lies and propaganda

I Quite Agree That The Quality Of Education In South West Nigeria Might Have Dwindled.

However, I Dont Think The Waec Ratings Paint The Whole Story. For All That Has Been Said, Literacy In The West, In My View, Is Still On The Rise, Perharps The Highest In The Entire Country.

Sw States Still Do Very Well In Neco( Ekiti Came First Last Year) And The Region Came Tops In Jamb In A Report That Made Fp Earlier This Year. So It Might Not Be As Bad As Stated.

The Onus Still Fall Especially On The Govs To Provide Funds For Education. As Education In The SWest Is Still 3rd World

SE states in particular have been very impresive of recent. Kudos

Don't fool yourself se and ss see everything as competition with their boss pikin, the afonja, it is kudos to special centres cos they want to catch up with afonja. relax, the days of reckoning is coming.

Besides waec is not the only way to get a tertiary education.

Read it slowly, carefully and very well and you would get it.

Once you get it, you will see the fallacy in your post it was responding to.

OP is not in his right senses why would you be using WAEC as a basis of SW dwindling in Education. What happened to University education, number of people going for University Education in the SW compared to other regions. It is a known fact that, the SW has more Universities both Public and Private in the entire country, this makes the percentage of SW citizen going for University Education much higher than any other region
What an arrogant display of willful ignorance. SE&SS still produce more uni admissions than other regions in Naija.

What is the relevance of this post, is it to shame or encourage the SW?

There's no shame here. It's what should happen that has happened. The Media has done its job by highlighting one of the things that needs fixing in the south west. What should follow is holistic effort to fix things. What sort of legacy will the current generation be leaving when education is left in shambles? If things were this bad in the 80s and 90s, the region won't produce its current crop of tertiary graduates.

This shouldn't become a tribal bashing or political issue. I like articles such as this. Kudos to Premium Times. My hope is that governments in the region will recognise the urgent need to do something about this ugly trend.

If not for the civil war, eastern nigeria would have been eons away from the rest of Nigeria.

Now we are bouncing back to our rightful place due to our diehard spirit.

Even in diaspora, igbos specifically have been distinguished among black Africans by their academic success. They are even touted as the most intelligent people in the black race.

The statistics on 2017 UTME malpractice is noteworthy. Most of the affected states are from the South East and South South as follows: Abia (381 cases), Imo (193), Anambra (152), Enugu (114), Cross River (78), Ebonyi (48), Akwa Ibom (44) while the states with the lowest number of cases are from the North viz: Kebbi (1), Kaduna (16), Kano (29), Katsina (2), Kogi (7) Sokoto (25), Taraba (4), Zamfara (1). Yobe and Jigawa states had no reported case of examination malpractice, only 2 cases of multiple registration from the latter. Could it be then that students and CBT operators in the North are more honest than their Southern counterparts, or perhaps less computer savvy? Does the 2017 UTME say anything about national character?

I no fit laff abeg undecided

The screen shot below provides facts and figures of numbers of candidates by tribe that gets admition into higher institutions.

WAEC is a joint classwork exam in Nigeria now, with questions online 24-48 hours before exam.

But this happened in 1930s not now. The ibos came out from the Bush and erase all the position the west had in education.

Waec shouldn't be used to measure the academic performance of geopolitical zones as waec is marred with series of examination malpractices. I served in Akwa-ibom and I know wat goes on in most public and private schools. Competitions like cowbell among others can still be trusted as a measure of academic performance not waec.

It's actually the opposite. Basic secondary school education is the most important. Ask Germany, Singapore, Japan etc.

Not everyone must go to the university, but everyone has a right to quality basic secondary school education.

Well done, now furnish the stats for graduates, post grad and then after analysing the numbers, let me know the most educated. Good job.

Living in calabar and ogun state has exposed me to a lot when it comes education....... the method of invigilation, screening and even teaching in Ogun state cant be compared in any way to calabar. A Third class brain in ogun state is a 2.1 brain in Imo..... quote me anywhere.
my brother, it is a big fat lie! a third class brain is a third clas brain until he proves otherwise via test and the like! I schooled in the east and I turned out to do better than loads and loads of oau and ui graduates in tests and interviews! it is personal! u r either good or not soo good. thats why it is called exams! personal issues can throw u off ur game and u graduated with grade that doesnt represent your intellect. you cant just come and make fallacious statements here cos u have data and talk is cheapM

The writer of this article is either lazy or senile

We have many exams like ; Waec, Gce, Neco, Neco-Gce, Junior Waec, Common Entrance, Uni-Jamb and Poly/College Jamb just to mention a few.

Among those eight I've mentioned, he now dimmed it fit to use only one to form the basis of his conculsion that...(lemme qoute him) "West education is dwindling in furtune."

He didnt even say, "in Waec." But in education as a whole.

He should do a more wholistic analyses because this one right here is highly deficient.

However, the West too should buckle up in Waec
