Miui 9 is an advantage not a disadvantage, battery even seems better, though if you want to upgrade to miui 9 now, it means you are porting to developer rom (this is also a plus).
To migrate you'll need to update to the latest global rom, and then download the latest developer rom on miui.com and flash manually. You'll need to backup your data to avoid any loss.

Just download the global developer rom from miui.com, copy the file into your internal memory( in a folder named downloaded_rom), then go to the updater app, click on the 3 dots at the top right of your screen, choose update package, scroll to the folder 'downloaded_rom' and touch the file there, update should begin and takes around 15 minutes to complete.

You have to backup your files before proceeding.

that is the purpose of developer rom. Weekly update every Friday. Na you suppose download am, then give feedback if any bug dey. Before them go package am well give those wen dey stable rom
