7-8 months is about 212-243 days... Yes it is very possible to get that a tenor around the days. You can get a good tenor in First Bank secondary market. Just try and go early.

Greetings to all forum members,

Please I am new to Treasury bills and very much interested in investing in it.

I would like to know if I can purchase treasury bills in Zenith bank as l have an account with them and I currently reside in Benin-city.

In 2015, I once tried purchasing NTB from a first bank branch, Ekehuan road branch in Benin-city, but the then branch manager swayed me into putting the cash in a fixed deposit account which I regret doing.

From previous posts I read, it appears like Stanbic ibtc bank and first bank are better for treasury bills investment. Is it possible for me to purchase treasury bills in any of these banks with my Zenith bank account, or is it compulsory I use a first bank account or stanbic ibtc bank account.
Also, does anyone have any idea of a first bank branch in Benin-city where I can purchase treasury bills.

Many Thanks!!

I have a slightly different view on T Bill rates in the short term. I think some people are overestimating the impact of the hurricane. So far, only about 11 percent of US refining capacity has been impacted. This will only have a temporary impact on oil prices so I while I agree with Alikote's analysis of the impact of higher oil prices on TB, I'm not convinced that oil prices will go up and remain elevates for long.

I do think that T Bill interest rates will remain high for a while until the economy starts to grow again at a brisk rate and the current inverted yield curve is an indication that the economy may not recover for some time to come. The recent dismal subscription of CBN long-term bonds may push the government to increase issuance in the T bills market to generate funds since they cannot obtain them in the bond market. An increase in issuance in the T Bills market will provide support for T Bill rates.

Very sound perspective.....

I second ur thoughts.

Yes you can buy treasury bills from Zenith bank or any other bank but you will have to have an account in the bank you intend to use. Your assumption of FBN and IBTC being better in treasury bills is correct based on my own personal experience.

The DMO and CBN need to do better job at coordinating their issuance strategy.

The interest rates being offered for these bonds are ridiculous relative to what one can get in the T Bills market. Imagine an interest rate of 13.817% for the 2-year bond versus 22% (true yield on 1-year T Bill)? What this effective means is that in order for the 2-year bond to be attractive, you have to believe that the true yield on the 1-year T Bill will have to drop to below 6.22% after one year. The likelihood of this happening is almost non-existent.

Brothers, if you are considering investing in these bonds I urge you to reconsider. We are much better off investing in T-Bills. The only advantage I can see is that the minimum subscription is N1,000. This is a joke.

I just got a call from my Stanbic branch that i should come and fill the form tomorrow morning for Wednesday's action. I went there last Friday but was told that they were waiting for directives from head office and that once they get a go ahead, they will call me.

@ GODAKPAN

You will get N370,425 every quarter and your 10m will be returned to you after 3 years.

That means you invest N10m for a 3yr bond and earn average of N120k monthly for 3 years, although you will receive it every three months, that is quarterly.

The only constant feature here is that you are guaranteed of your earnings until your capital arrives. Hmmmmmnn.

If I invest say 1 million in T bills for 365 days at say 18% and I terminate after 60 days, what's likely to be my penalty?

The situation is confusing as Iam still yet to see the CBN 4th quarter TB calendar. The TB officer in my branch said that she called head office as she promised me last Friday and she was told that she can now start accepting and that was why she now called me to come. Iam waiting for what will happen. If there is no auction, my money remains in my account.
