The reforms Abe seeks encompass Japan’s entire national security infrastructure but focus especially on the SDF, until now restricted by the nation’s postwar Constitution from playing a role in international security issues commensurate with the country’s economic power. The Abe government regards the crises Japan faces as serious enough that it has considered trying to amend Article 9 of the Constitution, which renounces the country’s right to war as a sovereign nation. But such a measure requires not only a majority vote in a national referendum but also a two-thirds vote in both houses of the Japanese National Diet.

The Japan military architecture limit them from attacking neighboring countries and restricts them to self defence only.

It's driving force is mainly North Korean nuclear test with misses being shot over their airspace, and boundary rows with China over water space and island.

Japan has always have the notion of the denuclearation of the North Korea,it has formerly rebuffed the aggression of the US and favour a pacifist view.it has the SM-3 and the patriot PM-3 which can tract any ballistics miaale form the DPRk...But in recent times due to the recent treats from north Korea it is favouring an aggressive approach and it is in collaboration with China and US to ameliorate this menace.

You didn't get it right sir.
the military architecture is fortified buildings in form of castles.
the current review is to improve its capability of counter attacking/neutralizing enemy base in light of potential NKorea threat

Japan's military can't be compared do other countries her size and even lesser e.g germany ,usa.It is considered out of date.
Reason: they are worried about China and Korea and also they know that the usa- japan alliance is one sided

The proposed changes would allow Tokyo to play a more proactive role in international conflicts and complement its growing cooperation with the U.S. on security matters. They would also help Tokyo coordinate efforts with other partners in the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia and India.

Japan’s evolving defense priorities on China focus on four overlapping areas: preserving territorial integrity and control in the East China Sea; continuing to insist on transparency for China’s military procurement; adapting to China’s emerging military assets (especially those making it an overnight naval power); and mitigating Chinese attempts at cyber warfare and cyber espionage.

The Japanese government has releas a new national security strategy Which highlights an even more comprehensive look ahead built around what the call building a " a comprehensive defense architecture so that they won't be intimidated by North Korea and China . And Japan is not simply arguing in blacks in white terms, war or peace but the necessity to be engaged in shaping the environment which meets the interests of Japan's and allies.

they are currently on the purchase of surveillance tech, aircrafts, f-35 fighter jets, radars, drones, and a missile defense system, and a secret nuclear warhead in response to the testing of nuclear missiles by north korea and protection of its citizens

its millitary main aim is to defend the country from any attack by the neigbouring north korea...

but if the need be...
they could counter attack with the use of the missiles being put in place..

Japan's military posture is a Defence Only posture(Pacifism)

What is driving its review
Japanese strategists argue that such changes in defence posture will allow Japan to help build a regional security network in Asia and respond with partners to emergencies
Right answer.

The key word here especially for the first portion is PACIFIST, which you stated as pacifism, with respect to the first portion of the question.

Japan has always maintained a pacifist posture when it comes to their military architecture. But due to the growing threats in the region, especially from their belligerent neighbor North Korea, the government is seeking, through a constitutional review, to develop offensive military capabilities.

This here is the right answer.

Next time do well to copy me when you attempt the questions. This would have escaped me if I hadn't gone through the entire page.

according to the Pacific Constitution, japan is prevented from engaging in a military action.an act has been submitted for approval for self defense.

China's aggressive actions in the East China Sea, combined with other factors, especially North Korea’s continuing intransigence, have created an increasingly hostile security environment for Japan. Its response to these events can be seen in the impressive political rebirth of Shinzo Abe and the Liberal Democratic Party. While Abe, currently serving as prime minister for a second time, was elected largely because of his economic policies and the ineptitude of the formerly ruling Democratic Party of Japan, he has used his mandate to press forward with long needed, albeit controversial, defense and security reforms that indicate the seriousness with which Tokyo takes its current situation. With China looming up in front of them, and Pyongyang posing lesser but still worrisome threats, the Japanese have become acutely aware of the fact that their Self-Defense Forces (SDF) have one hundred and forty thousand ground troops, one hundred and forty-one maritime
