I'm one of the atheists who is not bothered by being told I'm going to hell... to me it seems so silly-- like someone telling me Santa won't bring me presents. I'm embarrassed for adults who believe in such things. I always wonder if they believe because they are afraid that they might go to hell if they didn't. There's a kind of ugliness to it as well. It's usually used by people who can't answer the questions you've asked them, and it's said in a spirit of vengence- 'you may have defeated me with arguement, but my God's going to burn you alive forever, hah-hah!' . I don't respect people who argue like that.

This seems to be me at this moment but I was born and raised and i have been in church but to leave it all just feels .......

I felt like an alien, like I'm alone in a crowded room, I didn't even know there was any such thing as atheism before I became one, I felt like patient zero

I had to keep my lack of belief away from family and friends but they eventually discovered cuz I told my best friend who in turn told them

Did you feel confused about the whole thing? Did you feel like you should try harder to keep being a Christain instead of changing? If you did please can you explain how it felt and how you dealt with it? If you didn't thanks anyway, you've been helpful.

You are not lying. My own problem with them is the hypocrisy and pride. They act as if they have gotten something, oya show us na, na there wahala go burst. They will tell you to believe. They see people offering sacrifices and they laugh, yet they give offering every goddamn Sunday. What's the difference between giving the money and giving what the money bought? Awon oniranu.

Yes I did, I tried as hard as I possibly could to delude myself into believing again, the problem however is that the more doubt sets in the more EFFORT it took to remain a believer; something I've believed in effortlessly before suddenly requires not only efforts but increasing efforts, then one day I realised I've stopped believing altogether

I handled it by remaining sincere to myself and realising there were many things I believed in while younger that I realised isn't real eg Santa, tooth fairy, bogeyman under my bed etc and Yahweh just joins the everincreasing list

Over the past few days, this thread has become crowded with good comments, bants, and sheer derailment. I have stayed in the background observing the conversations and no matter how many times I have seen it, it still leaves me amazed at the kind of assumptions a lot of people make.

Many people presuppose the Bible is true, but it may not be. So, if you are one of these people, you should preface every contingent belief with "If the Bible is true...".

For example, "If the Bible is true then God exists" or "If the Bible is true then Jesus was resurrected" or "If the Bible is true then a snake could talk".

And you might like to add, "But if the Bible is not true, I've really f**ked up."
