Lagos Traffic: Nigeria to divert cargo to Warri, Calabar

September 26, 2017

Agency Report

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has called on importers to utilise Warri and Calabar sea ports to decongest the current traffic challenge in Lagos.

Mr. Fashola, who made the call on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing journalists, blamed the traffic challenge on the ongoing rehabilitation work on Apapa-Wharf road on congestion.

He said the reduction of cargo movement through Lagos sea port would reduce traffic on the ever busy Apapa-Wharf road, being rehabilitated.

“What we can do also is to perhaps, for now, move our cargo to other ports if the content is not to be delivered to Lagos.

“If the content is to be delivered to the east, the Warri and Calabar ports are there, so, we have all of this access, let us also be very flexible about using them.

“Our appeal to importers is to also bear in mind that we are constructing a built up area, therefore, their flexibility will help us improve service delivery,” he said.

Mr. Fashola said the ministry was aware of the challenges faced by motorists as a result of the ongoing project but called for patience.

“Recently, we heard the licensed custom agents complaining about the same road, we hear you loud and clear, we have started work, so bear with us.

OK what does his request matter. Shouldn't the call come from NPA director Usman if anybody. I don't see why importers would care about his personal issues.

While I am a supporter of this administration, I don't think Fashola is sincere with this call. Or at best just to divert incoming cargo temporarily to other states and when the roads are finished, they will simply return to status quo. This is a government that is proposing another port in Badagry. Is it that they don't know the traffic implications for the state? If it is for the development of SW (as people tell me), why not take the coming port to Ondo state because they also have access to the sea? At over 20million residence, Lagos is already too congested. I am not an expert in the shipping industry but from a laymans perspective, it makes no sense to have another port in addition to the existing well-function ports in tiny Lagos.

I'm sorry maybe I am myopic and not seeing the bigger picture so I will appreciate an intelligent explanation. The only reason I can think of is if its is for political reasons. Since Lagos has now become like a fortress for APC and Ondo (even Ogun) may not always be guaranteed to be ruled by APC government.

Hope after rehabilitation the cargo imports should continue in Lagos, or are you people trying to implement the agitation for use of Calabar, Warri and PH seaports through the back door?

A nation held hostage by its leaders. Selfishness and tribal interest would never allow the nation develop to its full potential. These are the reasons for continuous agitations, and if not tackled fast, barrel of the gun can not hold the nation together.

It is clear importers prefer to import to Lagos because it is easier to sell their goods there. Apapa is overwhelmed and Lagos state has shown good vision in initiating Port Development in Lekki through PPP schemes.

We thought Akpabio had the same vision and the FG has approved the Ibaka scheme but he chose to build a fraudulent hospital and stadium.
Those waiting for the FG to build a port will wait for ever. The NPA authoized Ibaka seaport long ago then next thing is to find the money. The FG will never get that kind of money again with all its debts states need to take their destiny in their own hands especially the Niger Delta states like Akwa Ibom,Delta Rivers and Bayelsa. when governors like Ibori and Akpabio plunder their resources the people celebrate them as heroes

I'm just always surprised when people turn common sense to politics. He has not mandated importers, he has only advice them which they need no one to tell them in the first place. I live in Apapa and the traffic here is like nowhere I've ever seen. No wonder the roads are this bad. Other ports should be utilized biko.

Politics is killing this country.

Imagine if all the ports in both south south and south east were all working?

By now, nigeria would've been miles ahead

No doubt Lagos needs at least two more ports One on the Lekki axis and another at Badagry and Ondo state should partner with other SW states to develop another one at least

My dear, it's very painful to see that nations that copied from us in the past are now in their fourth and fifth stages of development while we're moving back instead because we can't even maintain the old status.

Let's hope that one day, we may have a leader to put things right

Why won't Lagos allow it. Where do all these conspiracy theories come from .Akpabio was in power for 8 year with another Niger Delta person as President what did they do?

The port at Ibaka was approved a long time ago by NPA the only thing holding it is money so why did Akpabio choose to build a stadium that we use 4 times a year. Which is of greater value to the people?

DECEIVING NIGER DELTANS AGAIN...FOR ALMOST 60 YRS, IT'S NOW YOU WANT TO DIVERT CARGO TO CALABAR AND WARRI? WHAT'S THE MEANING OF "DIVERTING"? LAGOS SHOULD DIVERT ITS CARGO INTERNALLY, NOT GIVING LEFTOVERS TO SS PORTS. OPEN ALL PORTS IN NIGERIA INCLUDING DRY KANGAROO PORT IN KADUNA, AND LET THEM ALL COMPETE. STOP HOLDING OTHERS FROM PROGRESSING ON PURPOSE BECAUSE YOU ARE AFRAID SOME REGIONS WILL FLOURISH WHEN THEIR PORTS OPEN AKA SS AND SE PORTS.

Anyway the problem with that road is maintenance not just the port. The financing model through the fG is wrong. If they hand that port and road to Lagos State government no matter how busy the road is it won't be like that and this is a case for devolution. If you have a chicken laying eggs won't you feed it?

Government for years takes money from the port without fixing the road and this is the consequence If a percentage of those earnings went into that road yearly to fix minor problems immediately before they become major ones we won't be here today. The same thing with Third Mainland Bridge

This is the sole reason why Nigeria will never grow. Your tribe this, your tribe that. Lagos State is already constructing two other ports at Lekki and Badagry. Is Lagos State going to construct for other states too.

Instead of holding your governors accountable, you keep crying wolf. Igbos are the largest importers in Nigeria. They are not Yorubas but they prefer to import through Apapa wharf because it is close to their target market.

My advice, go back home and develop your cities. Let a large number of people move back home so that there can be demands for these imported goods in that side too. Lagos can't divert it's cargoes internally like you stated. The importers would incur additional cost to bring them down to Lagos. They can only divert temporarily to fix the damaged roads. Follow my advice, Lagos is not your problem, your leaders are.

The port at Lekki is being built in Partnership with Investors. Lagos state provided land and Tolaram the cash. Why is Tolaram not going elsewhere.
No one threatens people in Lagos for jobs or takes workers hostage or takes coffins to their gates.

Akwa Ibom was lucky under Akpabio to enjoy $100 oil . Delta state was lucky under Ibori. Where is the Money

Arrant nonsense. Successive government deliberately left the seaport in Warri and Calabar to rot in other for the one in Lag to flourish due to political reasons. Now that the place is congested you now want to use the abandoned facilities.

Nice one. But what about Port Harcourt (Igwe Ocha) Port? Why is it not included?

We expect Gov. Nyesom Wike and Ndi Rivers to ask Fashola this question.
