I think it'll be a combination of physics and neuroscience. As for neuroscience, I have the benefit of absolute ignorance and naiveté going for me here, so I may have fresh perspective to offer, or I may drown in my own hubris haha! Physics will just involve mathematical modelling of our organic processes to test the predictive power of my hypothesis. By the end of my project I'd want to definitely prove two things: (i) That all living organisms, including humans, are super predictable, and (ii) Therefore, freely willed choice is an illusion.

It's same as any other drive! It keeps eating into your thoughts, increasing its mindshare in your brain, tormenting your every wakeful hour, whispering soundless words and gratifying your every hints and ideas, good or bad, with imaginary Nobel recognitions, until you yield in the belief that there's no other way to satiate or silence the drive. If you're even lucky, it just might convince you that the world would be a better place with your work...then you start to think you're not just indulging your ego, but you're also a messenger delivering something immensely bigger than yourself! And then you just do it! No choice involved, just an illusion of!

About harnessing highly efficient UV light using semiconductors. I don't know my word count. I need to collate my published papers first. Presently writing two more on the same subjected, so I'll probably finish this whole project by next year.

I'm trying to think about something that makes me feel the way you just described. The closest thing is when I start fantasising about nigerian food, sometimes this particular Cantonese street noodle . Makes me hop on the train to london when I cannot bear torment anymore.

On a more serious note, maybe politics. I keep toying with the idea of it, maybe running as a local councillor and then proceeding from there. But then again, I enjoy the simpler things of life, family etc.

I fear it may become all encompassing.

Well, I fear that level of passion for something. In order to be really dedicated, other things will suffer. You cannot say that your academic pursuits haven't come at the expense of other things.

Maybe I want to have it all, just haven't figured out how; there are only 24 hours in a day afterall.

You've got it all figured out sounds like a plan. But seeing the week May had last week is enough to put anyone off politics. That woman isn't having a good time of it, quite rightly so.

At making sacrifices, we are in agreement. Not necessarily suspicious of those who have it all figured out. More like not taking them seriously, the only way to grow is to keep questioning what is even when there isnt any apparent flaws. It can always be improved, we can always improve.
