Nigeria 1-0 Zambia Aftermath: Super Eagle Speak

Troost-Ekong : Sunday Oliseh Told Me Oyibo Boys Are Too Soft

Published: October 09, 2017
Troost-Ekong : Sunday Oliseh Told Me Oyibo Boys Are Too SoftFormer Netherlands youth international William Troost-Ekong has hinted why he found game time hard to come by during Sunday Oliseh's spell as manager of the Super Eagles.

The Bursaspor central defender made only two appearances for the national team, against Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo, under the stewardship of Oliseh before he was frozen out of the squad.

''The Olympics was like a restart for my international career. I was part of the Super Eagles until Sunday Oliseh took me out because he said Oyibo boys are too soft,'' Troost-Ekong said to aclsports.com.

''I hope he’s watching his TV now and see us going to the World Cup.No ill feelings, I saw him at the Olympics last year and we spoke briefly.

''He didn’t believe in me then but I think Nigerians can see now what I can do.''

Nigeria have kept seven clean sheets in fifteen matches William Troost-Ekong featured for the national team, and he partnered German-born Leon Balogun in central defense in five of those games, against Chad, Mali, Tanzania, Cameroon and Zambia.

We have been down this path before. If Nacho did what Ighalo performed against Zambia, he would have been roasted on this thread. Many would have been calling for a replacement.

Let us call a spade a spade. Ighalo was awful in that match. Let us hope he does not perform that way again.
Ighalo was awful against Zambia? Pls i need to watch d match again,i thought only Mikel Agu was awful in that match coz Rohr said Agu had a very disappointing match.

I am also not pleased with Ighalo's performance in that game.

1 goal in 3 matches is not acceptable for a top striker IMHO.

If we want to go really far in that world cup we need a very prolific number 9.

Tammy Abraham is in blistering form. Pinick needs to relaunch a bid for him.

Tammy has three goals in nine games for Swansea. I doubt that is anything close to blistering. We should stop beating around the bush and put Nacho there. Give Nacho good passes and he will convert it. It is as simple as that. With Mikel he would have torn SA apart.

3 goals in 9 games is a fair performance for a striker in a club that typically does not have so many scoring opportunities.

Let Iheanacho start playing regular football first. If he cannot break into the starting 11 of Leicester City then what are we talking about?

3 goals in nine matches is fair for Tammy(earlier you said blistering form) which one can say on average is one goal in three matches yet for Ighalo one goal in three matches is not fair enough? Now I am not trying to denigrate Tammy or excuse Ighalo but I just want you to examine your submission on both of them based on my observation.

The earlier it is realised that Iheanacho is not a nine the better for you, for us, for him and his club. Cry all his goal per minute ratio you'd still come to realise he's no nine.

Iheanacho is a forward. Not a nine. He can play multiple roles along the front line and the AMF role. Just like Gabby Jesus, Aguero, Sterling and Sane. However, Iheanacho is our most lethal leading the line.

As I said before, why must we leave the fate of our players to the decisions and sentiments of foreign coaches. So even though you know Iheanacho can convert the chances better than Ighalo, we should not play him until Shakespeare who obviously looks confused at Leicester City can sort himself out. Does not add up for me.

Reminds me of Oliseh who refused to play Nacho until he scored against Palace. As Solace Chukwu asked. Does it mean the goal raised Iheanacho's quality?

I agree with you on him being a forward but when you talking of a top hit man in the mould of an out and out striker then he ain't. Look at Muller in Germany. He's very lethal but he's not the main attacker for Germany. He should play behind the main point man and I tell you he would like Muller score loads of goals. Being the main attacker has stifled his game although he still does good by it but his best lies just behind the front lines.

Nacho played top for Guardiola and did well in the few games he played. It did not stiffle him. If Ighalo was marked out and did not get good opportunities, I would not be saying this. Marking him out would require the concentration of the defenders and room for others to excel.

In this case, Ighalo squandered opportunities and was slow to the spaces. Did not mean to run him down but the big powerful striker meant we sacrificed lethal finishing.

England U21's Tammy Abraham flattered by Nigeria interest

Tammy Abraham admits he is flattered by Nigeria's interest but vowed to stay focused on the England Under-21s.

The striker is expected to spearhead the Young Lions' attack when they travel to Andorra on Tuesday to continue their Euro 2019 qualifying campaign.

Abraham scored and grabbed an assist in Friday's 3-1 win over Scotland Under-21s having already denied he was planning to switch allegiances to Nigeria.

Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd is wary of losing his players, with Sheyi Ojo and Dominic Solanke also eligible for Nigeria, but Abraham remains happy with England.

"There are a lot of things going on and for me that is a sign you are doing something right, if Nigeria are fighting for you and England want you as well," said Swansea's on-loan Chelsea forward.

"I'm happy right now and I just want to keep playing my football. Nothing has happened [in terms of the Nigeria FA contacting]. I'm not too sure what is going on."

And Abraham is ready to take on Andorra, who lost 6-0 to Ukraine last month, at the Estadi Comunal in Andorra la Vella.

"We're in control of the group but we can't take our foot off the gas. We need to take confidence into every game and make sure we get the results we need," he said.

Boothroyd reiterated the point, warning his side they are not basketball team the Harlem Globetrotters and that they must respect Andorra.

The Young Lions boss wants his team to ensure they have the substance before they turn on the style as they aim to maintain their position at the top of Group 4.

He said: "My players are so skillful and comfortable on the ball that one of my biggest concerns is that sometimes they can be too elaborate on the ball.

"I keep telling them that we are not the Harlem Globetrotters and we are not here to do tricks.

"We can express ourselves by all means, but we are here to play as a team and we know when we come up against the big-hitters there will be no time for all that.

"We have some deadly players up front. My biggest challenge is to turn them into a team and a squad that is bigger than the sum of its parts." [/img]

Did anyone notice that Mikel did more of the pressing of the defence and keeper than Ighalo who was leading the line? I wonder what is the craze of this big powerful line. It does not even offer movement upfront.

It beats me how a fan would fervently expect and crave loss for his team to the extent of using it to poke other people in a very sensitive situation as was during the build up to Saturday's match. Didn't you notice you were ignored for those negative predictions?
A fan can have fears but to run around saying there would be tears is beyond the pale.

Super Eagles Coach Rohr To Nigerian Fans : Stop Criticizing Mikel, He'll Learn

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has dismissed criticism over the performance of Porto loanee Mikel Agu in the wake of his side's 1-0 win against Zambia in a World Cup qualifier this past weekend.

It was thought the German will tinker with his formation by moving Abdullahi Shehu to his natural central midfield position and Ola Aina will replace the Anorthosis Famagusta ace at right back as the Chelsea defender was told to warm up following the injury sustained by Eddy Onazi on the half-hour mark.

However, Mikel Agu got the nod from Rohr and his first contribution was getting himself booked after spending less than five minutes on the pitch, and the jittery midfielder misplaced some passes as the game progressed.

But Rohr defended Mikel in his post-match comments, saying : ''It’s not easy to come into such an important game for a young player''.

''Agu did his best and he’ll learn from the experience. This is not the time to criticize him; we should encourage him. He had a difficult game but he will learn''.

The 24-year-old Mikel Agu has collected four caps for the Super Eagles in the last four months, with three of those appearances off the bench.

I don't think Gaurdiola would agree with you on Nacho doing well.
Ighalo missed chances. It happens. I have even said that Ighalo should thank Iwobi because that goal saved him but Ighalo looked sprightly on that front. I know that the Zambian Ngoga is not at the level of Ighalo but you see on that day he was a menace although he didn't score. That's a good sign if a striker worries. It means he has it in him. Ighalo has it. He just needs to be more clinical. He's not big and powerful. Haba! Na Lukaku?

John Ogu, Etebo & Iheanacho Will Play Against Algeria – Eagles Coach Rohr Suggest
October 9, 2017010

A much changed but strong senior national team of Nigeria will be lined up by coach Gernot Rohr when the Eagles take on Algeria in their final World Cup 2018 Qualifiers in Algiers.

Nigeria are already through to the World Cup in Russia courtesy of their 1-0 win over Zambia on Saturday in Uyo, but Rohr insist they will approach the game with the seriousness it deserves.

A whole lot of players will be given the chance to showcase themselves in the game according to Rohr as he wants to provide every player with a chance to stake a claim for a start.

It means players like John Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Anthony Nwakaeme and co who have been frozen out of the starting line up are going to be strong contenders to start in Algiers.

” We never go to a match with second team, we want to win our last match as well. At least not to lose so we can qualify without losing any game, it will be wonderful this is another challenge but I think we will play a second friendly game perhaps in Morocco to see all the players who couldn’t play in our previous games”, the coach said.

Rohr – Iwobi Was The Only Tactical Substitution I Made Against Zambia Because…
October 9, 20170133

Alex Iwobi was the only player coach of the senior national team of Nigeria Gernot Rohr introduced against Zambia ‎in a bid to change tactics in the 1-0 win.

Rohr who made two other substitutions admitted the other changes were made due to injuries to the players who started the game, but that of Iwobi was planned before the game.

Iwobi who scored the winning goal for Nigeria replaced Moses Simon, and according to Rohr he was lucky to have tuck home the winner 16 minutes from full time.

The coach made this known while discussing the severity of the injury suffered by vice captain Ogenyi Onazi, which lead to his substitution early into the game.

“Onazi has an injury. He started the game very well. He has an injury it looks like a hamstring, it’s not easy as we have to make two changes due to injuries and only one tactical change but they did well, I only was afraid in the end, no any other injury please because we can’t make another substitution”, Rohr said.

‎”We were very lucky that the player (Iwobi) who came in ‎got the goal for us. But I believe starting with Simon Moses and bringing in Alex Iwobi when he was brought on was not so easy for us, but we know he could make the difference”, he concluded.

I think Rohr is grooming Agu to take over from Onazi and that's good because apart from going to the World Cup let's keep our eyes on building for the future. And the young man just needs encouragement which is what the coach is giving to him. That's even the meaning of a coach. You've not even really coached if you cannot turn a mediocre into a success.

Nigeria: Eagles Get Adebutu's N50 Million As Rohr Turns Attention to World Cup

By Christian Okpara
Members of the senior national team, Super Eagles, were all smiles on Saturday following the avalanche of rewards that came with their qualification for the Russia 2018 World Cup at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

Nigeria defeated Zambia 1-0 to book its place in the 32-nation FIFA World Cup billed for Russia next June.Coming moments after defender, Shehu Abdullahi got N1 million and 10 bags of rice for his man of the match performance, multi-millionaire business mogul, Chief Kensington Adebutu rewarded the entire team with the sum of N50 million for becoming the first African country to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

While presenting his cheque to the team, Adebutu praised the Super Eagles for their determination, professionalism and commitment throughout the qualifying campaign, which saw them overhaul the so-called Group of Death with a game to spare.

Speaking with the duo of midfielder Ogenyi Onazi and match winner, Alex Iwobi, the successful businessman urged the team not to rest on its oars, but to prepare hard to be worthy ambassadors of Nigeria and Africa at the FIFA World Cup finals in Russia next year summer.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles' Manager, Gernot Rohr has revealed that the team would begin preparation for the World Cup immediately.

Nigeria has won four matches, including the 2-1 defeat of Zambia in Ndola on match day one, 3-1 victory over Algeria in Uyo, 4-0 bashing of Cameroun also in Uyo and Saturday's 1-0 win in the reversed fixture against Zambia on Saturday. The team's only draw came against Cameroun in Yaoundé.

The Super Eagles will go to Algeria for the final game of Group B already assured of a place in Russia.Speaking after Saturday's game against Zambia, Rohr said: "It is not over yet. We need to build a solid team for the World Cup.

"We won four of the five matches played. With the quality of teams in the group, I didn't think it would be possible."On the game against Zambia, Rohr acknowledged that "it was a very difficult game... in fact the most difficult for us in the qualifying series because of what was at stake; because we knew a win would take us there and we were eager to finish it off.

"I commend the Zambians for their spirit. They fought very hard. This team was different from the one we defeated in Ndola last year; this was a much better and stronger team.

"I am very happy for the players and for this great nation, for us to qualify with a match in hand. It is a good feeling and after this night, we will begin to plan about how to prepare for the World Cup."But we have the final match in Algeria next month, and perhaps we can have a friendly within that window as well and begin the preparation for Russia 2018."

You see things in black and white terms-a one track mind. For you Ighalo is all black. Iheanacho is all supreme. You condemn totally and exonerate totally-no room for shades of grey, for nuances, for subtleties (for eg compare your views on the Tammy issue with that of Joebie). I don't look at things that way. That goal against Cameroon is the mark of a marksman. Again I say Ighalo has it. Dude just needs to be more clinical.

NFF thanks Presidency, NASS, Dalung, Gov Emmanuel, Nigerians, stakeholders

PINNICK THANKS GOVERNMENT
President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick on Monday expressed the gratitude of the Federation and that of the Nigerian Football family to the Presidency and various other individuals and groups who contributed to the Super Eagles’ qualification for Russia 2018 World Cup finals.

The Super Eagles pipped hard –fighting Zambia 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo on Saturday to become the first African team to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals. But Pinnick noted the Eagles would not have been able to make light work of the so –called Group of Death without the support of so many people and institutions.

Pinnick praised President Muhammadu Buhari for his keen love and support for the team, while also commending Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Sports Minister Solomon Dalung and the sports committees of the National Assembly.

“Mr. President was always there for the team and for the NFF; he supported us not only by providing whatever we asked for but also by keenly following the progress of the team. We remain eternally grateful to him.

“The Vice President came to see the team at training session during one of the qualifying matches and showed immense interest in the team’s welfare. The Senate President personally attended the matches against Algeria and Zambia and sent representatives to the other qualifying matches.

“The Sports Minister? He was a pillar for the team and the NFF during the qualifying series. Apart from always taking up the case of NFF and the team at the Presidency whenever we needed funds for the assignment, he was personally present at all the qualifying matches we played in the group phase.”

The Eagles played all their home matches in the group phase in Uyo, and the NFF supremo spared no encomium for Governor Udom Emmanuel and the Government and good people of Akwa Ibom State.

“Governor Udom Emmanuel did tremendously well. He never wavered in his belief that the Eagles would make it. The Government and good people of Akwa Ibom State showed warmth and commendable hospitality throughout.

“We also commend the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Senate Sports Committee and the House Sports Committee for their support and encouragement.”

The NFF President equally lauded the hard work that the Members of NFF Executive Committee and the NFF Management and Staff did to ensure a smooth run of the campaign.

“The Members of the NFF Executive Committee, my colleagues, were marvelous. I doff my hat for them, for their energy and enthusiasm. The NFF Management and Staff led by Dr. Mohammed Sanusi (General Secretary) also did a wonderful job. Everyone put themselves at the disposal of the Federation for any duty assigned to them, and they did their work well.

“We cannot probably mention the names of all those who helped, but we give kudos to our partners and sponsors, and all stakeholders of Nigerian Football, indeed every Nigerian who played a role in this success.”

Mujtahida:

It beats me how a fan would fervently expect and crave loss for his team to the extent of using it to poke other people in a very sensitive situation as was during the build up to Saturday's match. Didn't you notice you were ignored for those negative predictions?
A fan can have fears but to run around saying they would be tears is beyond the pale.

I am sure in your mind Zambia won the match. Sorry
i wont engage you now the great islamic law scholar, come up against a quality opposition and watch here turn to a river of tears

Mikel: Russia 2018 ticket is dream come true

Captain Mikel John Obi has reiterated his boundless joy at the Super Eagles’ qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup finals.

“This is really a dream come true. The team and myself, we worked very hard for this believing we could do it, and we are over the moon that our aspiration has been met.

“I want to commend everyone who has been involved in this: the players, the coaches, the backroom staff, the NFF. It was not easy but we knew from the beginning that we would have to fight hard for every point and we did.”

The former Chelsea FC of England midfielder could have been going to his fourth World Cup finals, if Nigeria had not narrowly (head-to-head principle) missed the 2006 finals in Germany and he had not been injured just before the 2010 finals in South Africa.

“There is nothing one can do about that; everything comes in God’s time. I am grateful to God for this ticket and we will go to Russia and give our very best.”
