Bro, it's good you think the situation as abnormal. Just to bring to your notice, recruiters don't like seeing gap on your employment history especially after getting started. Having said that, it's worse if you have an employment period of up to o two years without having tangible projects you were involved in.
If I was a recruiter and meet a candidate who was working like you with no concrete project done, some of the few things that would run through my mind include:
A) He is not saying the truth of his employment. Either not employed or impersonating someone else
B) He was probably one of the redundant employees who's manager didn't deem fit enough to engage him in relevant projects
C) He has no vision of what he wants to make of his career on the long run.

Hello Guys, I know this is not typical of Nigerians to complain of getting paid without doing tangible work. As for me , am not comfortable with it but it seems no way out for me.
I am a very ambitious Mechanical Engineer with experience in various sections within the discipline because I have been working before graduation. Have both HNd and B.Eng. background. You know what that means.

I have been working in an Engineering firm for 6 years now but I have a big issue. I have been soo redundant for about 2 years now at my place of work. No sack, salaries paid as at when due, no project forthcoming and we are resume to work everyday. I have tried to get in touch with the management on we can diversify our operations maybe we can use our resources to get jobs outside our scope but all effort were futile.
I have considered leaving because staying their doesn't add value to me anymore. New jobs are not forthcoming.
Honestly I feel am sitting on a gun powder which I feel will blow one day. Even if this coy has so much money in the reserve, one day the money will finish.

Within this two years I have done some personal development training of Project Management, Maintenance Engineering and Managent because those are areas I love so much and would want to development myself privately. I had MNSE and COREN during this period hoping things will get better and I will move on. Up till now, nothing is forthcoming o. I am bothered. 2 years gone without doing anything and am getting paid. Pls am afraid. Resigning is not an option because I have bills to pay. Their not considering sacking anyone which means we will all remain their. Jobs are not forthcoming . Many interviews no reply . some would say am over qualified while I need to change job asap. Pls I need advice.

Sow the salary into my life(for doing nothing), I honestly would not be complaining.......

Mechanical engineering jobs are not easy to find bt try applying to oil coys or telecoms dey take alot of them. For now keep saving for the rainy day and maybe look into a business plan or investments. Cheers

If you are a mechanical engineer, and you reside in a city, while don't you consider building a standard auto repair centre as a side business. You have all the time, take lessons and perhaps during vacation or leave , you can travel abroad to seek additional experience.

In the interim , use your free time to visit kazeem, join them free and just learn. But don't expose your motive. I believe you will be valuable to kazeem and his company while building your outfit.

In few months you will have a side business and that will settle this your quest to be useful to your self.
If you are into building construction, replicate same by getting like minds in architecture and building. Set up a partnership and contribute your quota. Smart rookie builders and architects are everywhere in our university and will be more than ready to jump at your offer.
You destiny is in your hands, take charge of it and start doing something about it today.
Everybody will enjoy you complain , but we all have our individual challenges so nobody want to really help.

Brother, we share same faith here. My boss ones told me that I joined at the odd period; the office was ones a hub of activities. I guess its all about the current style of governance. Projects are no longer coming, and the ongoing few are improperly funded. And also, with the introduction of some new stringent policies, every major contractor would want to secure his own funds before handing down to us (the subcontractors). Uncertainties Everywhere!

You have an HND and B.eng. You have experienced working before and it's been 6 years if not more. You must be in your forties or late thirties. You most likely have a family. I don't think someone like you need advice from us, what do you want us to tell you that you don't already know? Is it to save? to start looking for alternatives or what? Keep your job and start consulting for other companies. Start your own consulting firm right under their nose. With all the ideas you have been pushign to them. Start with this month when you get your salary get an incorporation

1. Incorporate your new company.
2. Print and design materials like letter head , complimentary cards etc.
3. start hunting for contracts (you will realize its not as easy as you think but then it pays off at the end when people start to knwo you are now running your own business). If possible get a small office and put a secretary there too that may not be doing much and be getting paid salary but make sure salary is as low as minimum wage. So you dont hang yourself). And office should just be a small space desk and and a computer. 12x12ft shouldn't be far from home too for convenience.
4. If you get lucky and things start going well for contracts and bids .. you can quit

Your office is a mere front for a bigger operation...that aside,your job is the dream of many, however,if you feel you have to move on,bid your time,look before you leap and take your chances...however, I would advice you to start some thing of your own,start a side business or a consultancy,it is not just enough to be busy,one must be productive...
