So I dropped my notice of resignation on 11th September, 2017 and all hell seemed to break loose in a sense. Immediately Personnel passed my notice to my direct boss (who is the Managing Partner and son of the overall boss), he called me to his office for a meeting.

He asked me why I was leaving and all. I told him my reasons (none of which included pay, because, unknown to me, he had called my best friend, who also works in the same firm but has now moved to Canada for masters, to find out why I was leaving and that one was talking one nonsense that it was pay) and stated that nothing could change my mind, as I had carefully planned my exit for about a year, so there was no going back.

So why did I leave?

1. No clear career progression: the business is set up to perpetuate the overall boss and his kids. It does not have a plan to raise successful and distinguished non-family members.

2. There is no motivation for performance. Pay is poor and comes with the attitude that they're doing you a favour. There are no incentives. To add to it, they started cutting the already meagre bonuses. In 2 years I only got a 20k raise, despite being one of the star associates in the firm, quote and unquote.

3. The attitude, words and action of the overall boss to his subordinates is one I cannot stomach for too long. It is confidence draining and not good for the pysche. I believe a man's true character is revelaed in how he treats people of lesser status/standing.

I had wanted to quit about a year ago, but I didn't like how just a year would look on my cv, so I reckoned that two years was a decent time and decided to tough it out. Plus, I was working on a major case that I needed to see to conclusion, lest I be perceived as sabotaging the business. Concluded that in June, then I hit the streets.

Getting a new job was almost so easy ( though I was scared at some point). Over the past two years, I have gained like five-years worth of experience, so it was easy to get the attention of serious law firms. Job hunting did come with its own drama. A firm called me to come pick up my offer letter, after acing the interview; only for them to go cold on me. Till today, I heard nothing from them. Looking back, I'm thankful they didn't get back to me, because some big guys in the profession came knocking and I was all too glad to accept. Tomorrow, 16th, I resume with another Tier 1 Law Firm.

Lessons learnt;
1. At every point on the job, keep creating and adding value. That's what would stand you in good stead in the market.

2. Always have an exit plan else you become stuck.

3. Your confidence is your greatest asset as a professional. Guard it jealously. Most people will rely more on the confidence with which you put your points across than the merits of the points themselves (I might be wrong on this).

4. Keep the big picture in mind. Don't be carried away by the occasional peanuts designed to keep you stuck on the job. I had to drop my beloved offical car. No harm in short term discomfort for long term gain.

I left when the ovation was loudest. The admission of my bosses is that I'm a sound and hardworking lawyer, whom they would have loved to keep on. The boss prayed for me in conc. Yoruba language, you know those "ijinle" prayers right?

Were the two years worth it? Definitely yes!, in terms of experience and getting a peep into my potentials as a professional.

Would I want to do it again? Not sure o.

What you did was just too awesome.
A career driven person should always know when to draw the curtain close.
Wishing you higher ground in your new endeavor.

My own analysis?

No self development is a function of individuals, not firm.... No matter where u work, if u want to grow, u will grow

All businesses are built for the endowment of the owners... Though some may appreciate others who help them achieve that ambition, while others will not

One needs to learn how to withstand criticisms n still come out strong, without chickening out (sorry for that term), no matter how bad d criticisms are

Good u had the confidence to leave, especially since you are a professional... But hope, just hope ull b able to withstand t if d new place turns out to b d same as d previous... THOUGH I DON'T PRAY SO

#Thanks# No offence intended Sir

No worries. Your perspective. Ultimately, I wear the shoes and I think I made the best decision in the circumstances.

In any event;
1. I grew tremendously in the 2 years. Note that I said I gained 5 years worth experience in 2. That suggests growth and some effort at personal development.

2. It is too general a statement to say all businesses are for the endowment of their owners. If that were true, no multinational and multijurisdictional would exist today, as the driving philosophy behind these coorporations is more than self perpetuation or endowment.

3. There's a thin line between criticism and abuse. Even criticism must be constructive and one must learn to draw the line between a healthy dose which you need to grow and that which corrodes your confidence. You must know when to "chicken out", if you have to.

4. There are no perfect places. So I'm not under the illusion that my new law firm is heaven but, to me, it represents a push in the right direction.

I hope with these few points of mine, I have been able to convince and not confuse you.... cheesy

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Cheers.

number 3 is so true.

what people fail to realise is that there is a way you criticise someone to the point where that individual loses his self confidence. money isn't everything. imagine having to go to work and your mind isn't at rest because you don't have an idea what missile would be thrown your way.

even when one does a good job, compliments would come in form of criticism. how then does one expect to give his/her all when the one given is not appreciated in first place.

congratulations on the new job. wishing you greater heights.

Good day,

I really want to share my experience but I like being private, so this a 'secret' account.

Well, I started a new job few weeks ago. A mechanical Engineer by profession and been practicing since leaving school.

This new job came at a time where I was contemplating what to do with my life but my Lord came through for me.

I design Mechanical Building systems like the Plumbing, HVAC, Fire prevention and fighting amongst other related things. The role is interesting as no two buildings are the same and the taste, finance of the owners may vary greatly. Hence, the services Mr Dantata may want in his building is nothing compared to what Mr Danladi wants.

I worked with a consulting firm before now and the environment was lovely, but the pay was almost non-existent.

This new place gives me some perks but I have to be on site 90% of the time. Presently supervising an on-going project in Lagos, but I feel somewhat underachieved. Majorly, I would have to just implement the designs of another engineer and make minor corrections. I don't have the opportunity to contribute in the design process and that makes me feel like I am playing second fiddle.

I'm trying to calm my nerves but I know I ain't cut out for something like this. Sighs

Hopefully, I'll get over it or move on to something better suited for me.

For what it's worth I think it is OK to execute other people's designs since you are new. Over time you will likely get to give little inputs here and there, and then you eventually lead your own designs.

And then someone else will be executing your designs. I'm not an engineer but I guess that's the cycle.

So, I think you are doing good.

Dear All,

I work for a Tier 1 bank in the southern part of Nigeria in the Corporate and Investment arm of the bank more specifically I manage Oil and Gas companies in the public sector space and/or JVs or SPVs with annual turnovers of over $500m.

Summary of my role is to drive increment growth on the key names I manage, seek out new profitable relationships (calls), financial investment advisory, cross sell the bank’s liability and asset products, generate reports usings complex financial models, writing FAMs( financial analysis), resolve my customers short and long term challenges as they arise on my own or by liasing with the appropriate unit etc

My week is usually like a rollercoaster, there are highs and lows it depends on my balance sheet and income earned which is a major influence on how meetings can go.

For the most part I like what I do, it’s more sales related than actual investments option which i love more. Been here for a little over a year and I have gotten two offers from other banks here in Nigeria which makes me believe that negotiating from a position of Power (having a well paying job) is pertinent to landing a better paying job.

Thanks for this opportunity to read people's office daily life and be able to contribute.
I concluded my youth service 2 years ago. I recently got a new job and this is my 3rd month on the job. The issue is that my job makes me lazy around for long hours doing practically nothing. I work with a ptsp company and my job requires me sitting around a merchants location for practically the whole day waiting for issues to come up with their transaction system so I can fix . I like the fact that I have a job, but I don't feel fulfilled about it because I don't get to learn anything new for the whole day. I have tried severally to learn something new on my own. But the drive always dies after sometime.
Today has been same as everyday. I still haven't learn anything yet.

Please advice.

#My_Office!

Remember the freelancer that talked about one of his clients falling ill?

Well, I was robbed last month and my laptop was stolen.

Unfortunately, no money to purchase a new one yet so I'm kinda stuck.

It's not all bad news here however.

That particular client sent a mail about a week ago telling me that he had finally recovered. That was the best news I've heard since this month.

God will help me. Amen!!

Hello everyone, I was unfairly dismissed from work last month and my salary was withheld without any reasons stated. I have tried to contact the powers that be but have not gotten any response. Is there an organization that I can contact to look into my case? Also, are there lawyers on this thread that can advice me. Thank you all in advance for your contributions.
PS. I didn't know where to post this, sorry for going off topic.

Hello everyone,

I work in Branch Operations in a DMB. I'm primarily at the customer service desk and basically my duty entails managing customers' enquiries, complaints and requests; cross-selling the Bank's products and services to customers; customer onboarding, etc. For the past two months, though, I've been on relief duty at the Funds Transfer department as a relief Funds Transfer Officer - the sojourn ends next week Monday and it's been an experience!

On the Funds Transfer desk, my responsibilities include: transferring funds at customers' behest, reconciling the branch's internal accounts, raising Manager's Cheques upon customers' request, ATM administration, etc.

This week, yesterday precisely, I had a verbal argument with a customer who always brings multiple instructions after close of business and always has his way because he knows people inside and he has come to normalise it (Today, the customer came early!). While I understand that the customer has urgent needs - and there are alternative ways to meet them BTW - I truly believe that it is unfair for staff in Branch Operations not to get to see the sun on weekdays, when we really should. Anyways, as they say, "it's the job ...."

Welcome to my office!
