Some do block off the dates because they don't want any guests at that particular period. Just keep searching. In my own case, after canceling, they said they would be traveling and will block the dates in their calendar. But as at now those dates are still open. People have had good experiences, but I won't advise you to mention anything Nigeria. If they ask me again, I'll say Dublin, after all my flight would transit there.

Lol@dublin. Abeg no make them think say we be liars for naija o

Ok. Great

yimiton:
I cancelled within 48 hours of booking and my trip is still very from now, so I wasn't charged a service fee.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I honestly think you should report the host that’s discrimination, and it goes against Airbnb rules. If they don’t want a certain nationality etc they have no business being host. I’m surprised you were even asked that, when I booked mine, nothing like that came up, just a thank you from the host for choosing their home. Please no need to lie about your nationality.

Boss,

Not that bad though.

Although some jobs (some bank roles, some front desk roles etc) do require it. In the real sense, there are as much bilingual jobs as usual one language jobs. You just have to search for that which suits you. You might also want to pick up a bit of french along the way (Dont be like me, I never even start french course sef).

If you are the type that don't shy away from all kinds of job, then you should be good.

Let me point out here just like our seniors have been saying, some jobs require certification ( So if you intend to continue with your line of work or switch to a job and if these require certification etc,) be kind enough to yourself to acquire them. It wont kill you but will help you in the long run.

Also, if you get a job (and perhaps it aint in your line of work or it is just to make body and soul meet until a better one comes), please do it with all your heart. Recommendations go a long way here from what I have seen so far and this helps you build your network.

PS:
I never start work, so I might be wrong.

So my supposed airbnb hosts canceled my reservation grin
We got chatting and I answered their questions. Though, I could sense this dislike for black people from the undertone of their inquiries. But hey! a stranger is coming to stay in your apartment, hosts need to be rest assured that they too are safe.
Then the question of my nationality, avoiding to answer that would seem dodgy, there was no point stating another place, since they could request for my ID. Conversation ended with me mentioning Nigeria. Lol....I already knew what that meant before they replied me 36hours later that they'll be traveling and I should keep exploring, which I'm doing right now. Please those who used this platform and had good experience should pls share theirs

Stayed in three Airbnbs within a three week period recently (Did not want to stay the whole period at one place incase it was one chance). The first was a room in a two bedroom apartment, the host was not around so we had the entire apartment (Calgary) to ourselves..from Name and pics the host should be from Fiji islands or so..never met her in person. The place was so nice and homely. started to wish we had stayed the whole period there. Since it was her home, everything was available. Very fast internet, Washing machine and dryer, blender etc. It was home away from home.

Second place was the entire one bedroom apartment (Calgary). This one was strictly for Airbnb. It had a small TV. No cable or netflix, Internet speed was like etisalat 3g. The TV was not even connected, found the power cable in the kitchen drawer. A good thing we had an android Tv box. No washing machine, blender, etc just the basic stuff.

Third was an attic accommodation (Vancouver) with the hosts an elderly couple and they were really nice and friendly. Had good internet with cable TV. They said we could use their Kitchen but we hardly did. Gave us a great review when we left.

For us our target was a private bathroom (En suite). For some reason Airbnb does not provide a filter for that and you have to research or ask the host for that option..That was when our first host said she wont be around so it can still pass for a private bathroom.

Airbnb asks for profile pics to be uploaded. Put one with my wife...not sure if this helped our cause. About one or two hosts claimed their place was not available even though it showed available on the calendar...but all in all we did more of the declining because of shared bathroom or Kitchen. Your hosts may have been racists though as the conversation went a long way before they suddenly realized they were traveling angry

Will definitely do Airbnb again.

We stayed in airbnb for our first 12 days in Canada. The initial host we booked cancelled our request (or rather didn't not accept it). we moved on to another one and it was A okay. Our stay was quite good, one bed basement apartment, tv, internet and separate entrance. There was a kitchenette where we could cook, pots, plates and the whole nine yards to make you comfy. The place was not to far from buses and trains but we rented a car for the most part while we stayed there.

If one host turns you down, move to the next one. We were quite open about about who we are in the introduction (we didnt mention color) but family composition, our status in Canada and why we were staying at the air bnb (transition to find our place)!
All the best!

Hi Yimiton,
Hope you are well and thriving. Have you purchased your ticket now?
Quick feedback on Ethiopian from an unrelated trip: The Addis Airport is quite busy/rowdy with lots of people in the terminal but very functional.
My flights left on time and no issues with luggage.
Having experienced it myself..+ their affordable fares: it’s a great option

yimiton:
Really!? All the reviews I read here were pretty positive, although, I didn't check TripAdvisor. Could it be that they've improved their services or people just have much higher expectations than Nigerians? Were they specific about the result of the disorganisation? Maybe lost luggage etc?

I'll be with my 2 little tots too (first will be 3 years and 11 months while the other will be 1 year and 6 months). Good thing is my husband will be there to ensure things are in order and we'll be landing for good.

I'll find out more about them before we finalise. I don't want my precious luggage lost in any confusion.

Please it would be nice to read an elaborate post on how long it took you guys to get a job, what type of job and what you did or could have done differently. Also, how you made the transition from a job that pays the bills to your career. I think thats the missing link right now.

Thanks alot

Actually, would like the recent migrants to share their job hunting stories. That is, those who moved in the last 6 months. It would be interesting.

Thanks for the pointer. I wasnt ignorant of those before i made the plea. infact they are actually not many, and in most cases isnt as detailed as the info on landing, housing etc. that people seem more eager to provide.

maybe i just feel since jobs are a lifeline, we could do with more elaborate info of the hustle.

Hello Everyone,
Its so good to be here, feels like I just graduated.
I got PPR and planning to land in Alberta by December. I need advice on drivers license. I renewed my license in June and till now the card isn't ready and not likely to be available by the time I leave.
What can I do, can I request a letter or anything from FRSC?

Landed Calgary a month ago, shared my landing experience earlier. Calgary is cold, I’m mostly indoors except when I go for Dr’s appointment or lil shopping. The people are friendly especially when they realize you are expecting a baby soon.
I’m still eating my naija foods (brought in supplies for minimum of 6months, LOL) but recently went to farmers market in NorthEast to get tomatoes, pepper etc which is way cheaper than buying at Superstore.
Here is the address for anyone interested with pictures.

I’m looking for where to buy MEAT in bulk, will appreciate contacts cos I wanna stock up cos baby is due in 2weeks or even less
