Some tips for the driving

Know the hand signals
Always use your indicators (traffigators) even when you are asked to park
Follow speed limits
Pretend as if you are making use of the mirrors (even when there is no need)
When you are asked to reverse, look directly back not the mirrors.

Good luck

I did the driving test yesterday and passed! cheesy

Full authorization gotten!

It was an 'easy' process.

The test started with me turning all the rear lights - break, left and right turn signals, and the reverse/backup signal.

Instructor then moved to the front and i turned on the left and right signals, no headlights of wiper tests were demanded.

She got in and said she will be testing my use of proper vehicle lights/signals, vehicle control and traffic rules. Warned that my head needed to turn each time I was watching my mirrors (this people too like to give person expo) cheesy. Then she asked I backup whenever I feel it was safe to do so and that was how the "actual" test started...

Meanwhile, a lady that did the driving test before me didn't drive more than 90seconds and she was brought back to the office shocked - I am guessing she did a 'critical error', this results in an immediate fail but you will be told while you failed so you know what to work on
My greatest problems are the yellow and white road markings, but I knew a few things about those.

I turned the vehicle ignition on and the 'eye service' started - looked back, left, right, up, down and under cheesy then drove outta the parking lot.

I did the first right turn, did another right then realized only my left hand was on the steering... This was a fail looking me in the face! shocked Naso I correct my mistake - 10 o'clock, 2 o'clock.... the instructor, a female, wrote something on her sheet.

Drove for about two minutes then went into their parking lot - two poles spaced about 20feet apart, this must be time for the dreaded 'parallel parking'.
She asked that I park and backup in a straight line, I did but I wasn't looking back as I did it - I lost some marks here.
Drove forward, then did the parallel park in one go and got it.

One mistake, I was a little far from the curb - I couldn't see the floor properly from the driver seat - I preferred to stay away from the curb beyond the allowed distance (I think she said 16feet, I think I read 18feet from their book). Climbing the curb will backing up or parallel parking is a critical error - end of driving test if you do it.

Cleared the parallel parking and did another drive round a living area, did the driving well but came to a point where I had 'right of way' but I didn't take it - another mistake I did, but i refuse to take than refuse to give - not giving right of way when I should should be a heavier traffic violation.

I then drove back to their office and parked the vehicle - then she told me about the one handed driving, lack of looking back when reversing, parking a little far for the curb after parallel parking and where I failed to take right of way.
She also said I was turning too close to the curb when making right turns, all the same I passed - no grades for me but I shouldn't have scored below 80%.

A paper was issued to me, the driving license in card form will be received in the mail 2-3weeks from now.
License to drive the whole of Texas acquired! smiley I don sharply drop a copy of my license inside my guy car... 'I no like nonsense' cheesy

I wrote on exam yesterday, the second part is due tomorrow - that one WILL be harder.

The first part was straight forward, the class review the prof. did helped a lot. The second part from next two chapters are more 'tactical' in nature - SWAT things....

...but I heard my major is not difficult, why people come deh see pepper inside exam hall??
I hope to bring good news... It has not been easy but I am pushing it.
6 more weeks before the semester ends and we have already started registering for the Spring 2018 courses, I cannot wait to be done - the stress is too much for people that try to read.

Even if I had such plans, there are some problems with that - this city is small, less than 30k inhabitants - Uber doesn't exist here, there is only one cab that I know is in existence here.

The benefit of the license is that I can now aspire to own a car.

Someone in Corpus Christi can hustle around baytown, Beaumont and pasadena and Pearland area even Houston. Uber is not only restricted to where one lives

God has done. Car is really nothing, it's the insurance as a new driver that really counts.

This one also gives me headache but I will survive.

Just got back from Corpus Christi...

Most weekends, I try to leave school for a change in environment, it clears my head and I forget all about school work while away.

Finally fulfilled my yearnings to play WW2, I enjoyed it. smiley

It has been almost 100days since I got to the US and a lot has happened within this period...

To the Spring 2018 students -
* Come with as much money as you can lay your hands on and remember to spend it little by little when you arrive.

The cheapest items in Nigeria are expensive here, get your foot socks, inner wears, belts, cuff links and other similar items in Nigeria.

Even the price of shoe polish here is abnormal.

Be prepared to spend money in the early days but look out for ways to save costs e.g my school picks students from the Corpus airport at a very subsidized rate.

Instead of hotels or motels or airbnb, get someone to house you even if it is for a week - most students would have left school for X'mas/new year break by the time you will arrive.
Just find a way to get accommodated.

* On clothing,
They do more of t-shirts here, all dem packet shirts will amount to over dressing - I can't help it, I still wear my button downs.

The jean trousers are very important, I think I came with 6 and that will take me as long as a full year.

Shorts are cheaper here, that is if you can be bold enough to wear it to class.

Suits are necessary for college, you will need 'them'.
Ties should cost less in Nigeria too.

Spring will be in the middle of winter, come with the appropriate dressings or cold wee kee you.

Shoes - one formal pair should be fine, I wear mine occasionally. The casuals would be of great use, I wish I bought some low cost 'all stars' from naija - twuld have served very well as a walk about.

Designers don't matter much here, good quality is key. People here are too busy worrying over school work than what the latest designer is...
The springblades, shox, duramo and bennassi slides, gato, superstars, airmaxes, romas etc etc are mostly worn by Nigerians cheesy, most Indians are on sandals and 'slippers' (I kid you not!).

Don't break the bank, save the money.

*On Housing
There are different forms/classes of housing but budget between $250-$400 for rent + all utilities monthly, this is on the low end.

Will explain this point further when I wake, need to sleep now.
