I am not a Christian neither do i belong to any Religion whatsoever, but i do believe Religion is still an absolute necessity For a lot of people, especially those from Third world countries like Nigeria! Yes, and here's why i think so: :
I am a deist, or theist at best, But contrary to my previous beliefs, i don't think our people,that is, ordinary Nigerians are Ready for the Raw undiluted truths about Reality and Life just yet. Religion was designed by a Group of Extremely smart men as a Tool for General mental slavery for the masses by playing on the mind of the individual, Providing them with easy answers to the most fundamental questions we ask as humans, Thereby keeping them all away from seeking further truths, and instead more concerned about other less complex things. The Truth is that this has really helped in keeping the masses in a tightly controlled state and also helped avoid the chaos that would occur if people discovered the real truths about Reality and Life itself. I do think the decline of Religion is inevitable and someday, our future generations to come will look back and laugh at how stupid we were for actually Believing some of the most unrealistic, extremely obvious fables man has ever known, and still claim to be advanced people. But That is still a long way to come and as for now, people especially in countries like Nigeria don't need to know the Raw truths just yet, Imagine a Murderer or a kidnapper,or a robber or rapist eventually turning to an atheist?? Doesn't sound too Nice right? What will be the inner force that will torment their conscience after committing Horrible acts? Some people haven't developed stable minds up to this time, to be able to act Right and possess good moral standards without religion just yet. So most people still need Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed and the rest in their lives for now before they can talk about moving on to deeper truths. So contrary to my previous beliefs that we as a people need to be free from Religious slavery, I now realize that Religion is absolutely necessary to Help maintain Order in the Society so for now, Daddy freeze should let Christians and other people practicing their various religions to be. This is my own take on this issue.

Every society need a steady and potent placebo to keep the majority a peace.
Religion is that placebo and I am in support of her existence.
Not in support of her fanatics though.

Daddy freeze can be likened to prophet Moses who saved Israel from slavery. I had serious contentions with tithing for so long because I was never at peace with myself for paying tithe. Daddy freeze and especially Dr Abel Damina freed me from the struggle. No more guilt because I used to give the 10% to a growing church near my house for building project BT I always felt in between guilt and righteous. Now I know I have been doing the right tin all along. I don't call it tithe, I just give it to make the church fine and God has been blessing me. Thanks to the new generation generals of the gospel. I love daddy freeze

First of all, is tithing mandatory according to the scripture after the death and resurrection of Christ? Is there a curse attached as many churches preach daily?

Nobody is saying Christians should not assist their church. Some can even assist with more than the value of the tithe.

But any true church has both a moral and religious duty to stick t biblical rules and teaching. Not make up ones for own financial benefit.

Paying my tithe is not the problem. The problem I have with most churches nowadays is that they teach us "doctrines" instead of "religion". So many churches go as far as recording the names and amount paid by every member as a reference in case you are having problems or need assistance. Why are pastors close friends to the highest donors in the church?

I have been on Nairaland too long to know that majority opinion does not mean being correct. When a post about an employee and her employer comes up, the vote always goes to the employee because more people on nairaland are employed and vote from their own experience without putting themselves in the employers shoes.

The same goes for church matters, majority opinion does not make a thing right. I base all my judgements from scriptures and personal convictions. If anyone is to advice me on spiritual matters, definitely not Daddy Freeze because his lifestyle and the way he talks shows he is just an attention seeker. Let a real minister attack tithing and I will be interested in the discussion not a man who talks like women and fights dirty with no shame.

What remains worrisome is, why do Pastors harp on tithe as if their lives depend on it.
What do they do with all these tithe offerings in the face of abject poverty in the land?

If these Pastors can show little compassion with commitment or poverty alleviation schemes in diverse communities which is in every sense, Christlike; then we would know we are actually being led by Christian Pastors.

And not businessmen and demi gods.

It seems you understand the Bible only superficially.

Who was mandated to pay tithes even in the old testament, under Mosaic law precisely? What kind of professions were mandated?
Who received those tithes?

We seem to just accept anything, without knowing it in detail.

Christians are not under Mosaic law. And also not under pre-Mosaic law of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob. Though Abraham & Jacob tithed, it was not on regular wealth or income. Abraham tithed his spoils of war. And Jacob promised a tithe if God kept him safe. These were specific situations. (Gen. 14:20; 28:22). Because people are arguing that tithing existed before Moses. So even if we are not under Mosaic Law, what of Pre-Mosaic Law? We also are not under many sections of it. That is why circumcision or burnt offering are no more needed.

The new testament talks about everything regarding giving to widows, orphans, the poor and other aspects of Christian life. How could Jesus, Peter, Paul and the early preachers have missed mentioning tithing if it was mandatory upon us?

Simply because modern Christians are not part of the theocratic nation of Israel, hence liberated from certain Mosaic & pre-Mosaic laws including circumcision and many others. We need to remember that early Christians wondered if Christianity should be preached to biological descendants of Abraham only. But ultimately recognised Jesus' mandate to reach out to all the inhabited earth. Matthew 24:14.

Leviticus 27:30-34 clearly states how tithe should be done.
Numbers 18:20-21 states who should receive it.

Deut 12:17-18 and Deut 14-28-29 talk about the whole package of tithes, giving and gifts. Estimate is that all may amount to about 22% of wealth/harvest, not even 10% as mandatory upon the Israelite.

So we cannot just pick one convenient part not supported by Jesus' teaching because it suits us and make it a doctrine.

Yes 2 Timothy 3:16-17 makes it clear that all scripture is God-given and therefore important in training, teaching, correcting, disciplining Christians, etc But Jesus also liberated us from certain parts in real and practical Christian life. And re-iterated the parts we must keep. Like the Ten Commandments.

It is easy to say "whatever, I am not complaining about the money". But is it not important to you that your church should not spread false doctrine??

This whole controversy on the use of tithes will be solved when the religious body regulatory bill is passed into law. Then religious bodies will be forced to publish yearly audited accounts so it will be transparent.

But no, churches are kicking against it and making it look like a battle against the lord.

I've watched his interview his interview several times now. Dady Freeze never condemned Tithe out rightly he's only after how the Tithe Is being used in the hands of Tithe collectors (Pastors). How will a pastor collect enough Tithe and members of the church will be living in abject poverty, how many of Oyedepo's church members can afford to send their children to his University? How many of his church members from whom he got the money to buy private jet can be allowed to enter the private jet? Until there is balance, and pastors cease to monopolize the proceed of Tithes, people should stop it because Tithes should be used on both themselves and the needy.
This things are not happening in western world, are we now saying Nigerians are more religious than those they got it from. Let pastors start distributing the wealth with members of theirs churches from whom they got it.

I don't think payment of their salaries is a concern if the G.O has enough in the coffers to buy a private jet which is equivalent to the lifetime salaries of all the pastors.

Pastors are entitled to good houses and cars. But mansions and Rolls Royce? Not one, not two but sometimes 10 exotic cars and still find ways to convince followers that they need more money. The saddest part is that most of the workers in these churches are volunteers.

The best part is that anyone can wake up any day and claim that s(h)e is called. There is no test and no proof. Since when are human beings totally honest? The good thing is in good times you come for thanksgiving and in bad times you are coerced to pay more tithe.In all, it is a win-win for all the scammers. Ever wonder why all of a sudden there is a proliferation of churches in Nigeria. Just about anyone now is called. To be a good modern day christian in Nigeria, you must leave your brain at home. Those pastors that got caught in scam, molestation, fraud and embezzlement; who called them? Every pastor is credible as long as his or her secret has not been revealed.

I won’t bore you much Mr. but references you to watch a documentary titled “books banned from the Bible part 1 and 2” on YouTube.

After that movie you will be forced to do more research to know the true history of Christianity. And the good part of the documentary was that it was backed with live facts from lost books found and still exist till today.

If you must pay tithes, you are obligated to do it correctly as stipulated in the Bible.

1. You only pay tithe on the 1st,2nd,4th,5th and 6th years.
2. On the 3rd year, you are commanded to distribute your tithe to the poor, widow and hungry...this is not a choice, it is a commandment.
3. You must not pay tithe on the 7th year, it is the year of jubilee...you are commanded to eat your tithe before the lord.

But, if you want to give unto the Lord and his ministry as a new convenant Christian...you should not tithe, you should rather give willingly, cheerfully, not coerced or out of an obligation either to tithing in the Old Testament or from a preacher.
