Make sure you try to update to the latest version of MIUI 8 which is 8.5.10, i think is (536mb) then you can manually upgrade your ROM to MIUI 9...

Luck really matters, you can backup and nothing bad happened, but i will advise you to backup and then upgrade, in my own case i back up and nothing bad happened, and the upgrade was successful

Why is it so slow using wifi to upgrade my Xiaomi mi max 2 to MiUi 9 is there anything i can do to make it move faster or even move at all....wifi will be on and it won't download always on 1% downloading and after that, nothing else

Slow when downloading generally or just slow when updating?

Either restart the wifi or use as vpn with Chinese ip

I didnt reset either before or after upgrade and I used the updater app.
I'll advise you to use any blazing mobile network in your area instead of WiFi. It's a light stuff
