With some flood-damaged cars it may become necessary to REMOVE THE ENGINE and have the crank-case and cylinder heads opened up to check for head gasket damage, and water damage to bearings and such. If the vehicle was NOT running when it was flooded, the engine may only require an engine oil and oil filter change, along with a transmission fluid and filter replacement, to restore normal operation of the car.

If, on the other hand, the car's engine WAS running during the flooding incident, and thus ingested water via the intake manifold, then MAJOR irreversible damage to the engine is guaranteed. If any attempt was made AFTER the flooding incident to start the engine WITHOUT first expelling water by removing the spark plugs and turning over the starter, the engine could also be damaged beyond repair already.

Even for those cars which were fortunately NOT running during the flood, it is NOT enough to simply open the drain-plug in the engine-oil sump, to remove water that leaked into that oil-only crank case, before re-filling with fresh engine oil. In many cars that get flooded, the sump MUST BE REMOVED, to drain the dregs of water and sludge in the engine that WILL remain in the sump, even after the drain plug is opened and apparently "empty". That remaining soup of oil and water can ONLY be drained by taking off the sump completely.

Youtube videos correctly advise to remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over with the starter, to expel any water that might be in the cylinders. The video tutorials also advise replacing all fluids in the car, from the engine to the transmission, and even the axles, in cars that have been submerged in flood waters. Oddly enough though, I have not as yet run across a Youtube tutorial that discusses the importance of removing the sump, to drain all residual watery sludge in a flooded engine.

I am not paying duty on this car, so i am not shipping it to Lagos, I am shipping it to Benin, Popularly known as Cotonou, I see most people don't know Benin is the country and Cotonou is just a city.

But just to bring it to your attention, land border has been closed and cars can only be smuggled through Benin Republic, except you want to get the car into naija fast and furious style or Rambo style using long bow apache.

Still following with keen interest. Recently worked on a flooded Honda Accord 2008. It's not been a nice one. Steering column all rust. Instrument cluster not powering up the normal. Current was looped from another source to power up the instrument cluster. Engine harness and dash board harness would be changed. cry. Harness are very expensive

Just the same thing I was about to ask him, how will he get a nonstarter across the border. The only option you've is to separate the car into different components, ship as spare parts and clear for a cheaper price at Tincan.

Don't be too sure that customs won't come after you inside Lagos, we've seen them jumping fences in Festac and a friend's 2011 Benz E350 was impounded around toyin street, just last week.

Nna this is a terrifying new dimension. Are you saying that these customs men now leap over tall fences with a single bound like Superman, in order to seize escapee cars ?

I don't trust that man,
As you can see he is a clearing agent,
How do you expect a whole custom squad to go to someones house (a complete stranger) to seize a 2011 E350 whose custom duty is not even up to 2million.

There are two things involved, It's either he blew his friends whistle, or his friend is a lousy person and he casted him self, But either way, the chance of him casting himself is very slim.

Do you know how many 2017, hilux, prado, benz and porsche that are roaming the streets of lagos without custom duty. I know peeps with Gle Coupe without duty. Yet nobody dn enter their house.

Before custom can jump into your compound, it's either you have a big car lot with lots of smuggled cars or you're a car dealer.

Benin is not a state. Edo is the state, Benin is the capital city.

I destroyed a flooded engine because I believed that water would dry off inside an engine, only to discover too late that my assumption was completely wrong.
