zoedew:Eco-wetin? God forbid bad thing. I believe in moving forward, and not backwards. I am surprised that nobody is talking about the Carlyle Group. The Carlyle Group is a global alternative asset manager with $174 billion of assets under management across 306 investment vehicles. Founded in 1987 in Washington, DC, Carlyle has grown into one of the world’s largest and most successful investment firms, with more than 1,550 professionals operating in 31 offices in North America, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and Australia. https://www.carlyle.com/corporate-overview |

Grundig:You call the Carlyle Group mushroom? laudate:Few Nairalanders know about private equity and the players. ACA formed by the current minister for Trade and Investment even has a higher chance than Dangote ditto Carlyle whose senior board member is HRH Sanusi Lamido. Let a private equity firm buy 9mobile jare! |

Gerrard59:I do not wish to get into any argument with you. But I need you to understand that what Nigeria needs are not Portfolio Investors. We've had enough of people with 'gift of the gab'. Nigeria needs professionals. People with money, the requisite skills and chutzpah to back it up. Basically, we need the dogs bollocks! See what happened to power? Use that as a case study. Suavemente! |

Grundig:The private equity firms have cash. Lots of it. Basically, what they would do is bring in telecom experts to manage the firm, turn it around and make it profitable, so they can then cash in their shares and exit the firm, with a tidy profit. Private equity firms did not make a bid for the assets in our power sector. |

Grundig:Same "portfolio investors" invested in Diamond Bank, Ikeja City Mall, MTN, ABC Transport, Hygeia Group, Transcorp International, Mouka Foam, Farmpride and Jabi Lake Resorts? Nigeria needs professionals but Carlyle Group does not have them? Managing more than $175BN globally certainly needs an "unprofessional touch"! |

Gerrard59:The Carlyle Group is not a mushroom company by any standard. They are an experienced private equity firm with a financial war chest. What most private equity firms do after buying up such companies, is to bring in experts to manage the firm and turn its fortunes around. After they have put the firm on a solid footing and made profit, they cash in their shares, and take their exit. By the time this is done, the company has already become bouyant and has become a more attractive option for new investors. |

Gerrard59:Lol. I really do not want to do this. But let me try. MTN came to nigeria on it's own. No money bag brought them. MTN was and is still the biggest telecoms company on Africa. They had to lobby OBJ. . .sorry, story for another day. Diamond bank? I hope you are aware this bank is struggling? I read somewhere they will be focussing solely on Nigerian market. All the malls in nigeria are crap. They are good example of what I mean when i say we need professionals. Anyways bro, I'm not casting aspersions on anyone, but I wish we'd get something right. Ghana has Vodafone. Can you imagine? Ghana. I pray our rail system doesn't get in the hands of money bags aka portfolio investors. |

Grundig:Vodacom is in Nigeria too, but it functions as a telecoms infrastructure company. Vodafone through certain subsidiary companies, holds 50% of the issued share capital of Vodacom. Currently, Vodacom is jointly owned by Telkom South Africa, which holds a 50% stake in Vodacom, and Vodafone, which also holds 50%. |

Grundig:Same here, I don't want to, but I've to. ACA invested in MTN when she came into Nigeria, provided needed funds as at then. Actis Group profited so much from ICM that they invested into another, Jabi Lake Resorts. Not every mall is the same. My problem is that you keep underrating the likes of The Carlyle Group, Abraaj and ACA. Any will be the best 9mobile need presently. After five years or so, the difference will be visible. By then, your beloved Vodafone can purchase it knowing fully well that much work has been done in restructuring and management. As for the rails, same "portfolio investors" are required if you desire the modus operandi of Japanese trains. |

laudate:Huawei is also in Nigeria. We do not need them at the back end. We need these guys at the forefront of our industries. How can nigeria have main one (there's another one but i cant remember the name )and we still get exorbitant charges for data? I don't know about you guys but I'm sick and tired of crappy services, Appalling customer services and the likes. Again, I refer you to the power situation in nigeria. These were sold to portfolio investors. But you and I can attest to the shitty supply and service we are getting. |

nobilie:Still so amused by your logic that you outrightly believe an acquired Etisalat can overrun MTN Even a merger of all of them cant do it. Your statement already buttressed my last statement Bro, You re new to Telecoms. Averegely about 2years in the industry |

Grundig:The same Vodacom tried to buy Econet (now known as Airtel) in 2004, but had to abandon the deal several months later, due to a variety of reasons. ![]() Vodacom first intended to buy a majority stake in Econet Nigeria in a deal worth some USD150 million in equity, and another USD100 million in operational loans but Econet Wireless International had contested the deal in the Nigerian High Court. It sued Vodacom for what it describes as "inducement to breach of contract". http://www.balancingact-africa.com/news/telecoms-en/8603/nigerias-vee-network-the-transaction-that-sunk-a-deal-and-cost-two-senior-people-their-jobsIt later came back into the Nigerian market and acquired a telecom infrastructure company,(i.e. Gateway Integrated Telecoms Co.) in order to offer carrier services business, wholesale satellite cellular backhaul, as well as international and regional voice and mobile broadband solutions to the Nigerian telecom industry. International companies are wary of taking on liabilities in emerging markets, as any breaches discovered locally may be held against them in their home country. ![]() Here is more: Knott-Craig former CEO of Vodacom said earlier this year that two of its shareholders - Vodafone, which owns a 35 percent stake, and SBC Communications, which has an indirect stake in Vodacom through Telkom - were concerned about compliance with the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. The law, which threatens fines and jail terms, is designed to stop US multinationals and corporates and those companies with business in the US from engaging in corrupt practices. "If it were not for that, we would be operating in Nigeria now," Knott-Craig told Moneyweb earlier this year. http://www.balancingact-africa.com/news/telecoms-en/8603/nigerias-vee-network-the-transaction-that-sunk-a-deal-and-cost-two-senior-people-their-jobs |

Jejosan:But Nigeria is not a developed nation. We are still battling with power supply. A lot of foreign investors have shot down. Almost every family in Nigeria have generator, and we can tell how costly it is power a generator. Don't blame DANGOTE, blame the government. |
