As far as the majority is even concerned, he is hardly compared with both Pele and Maradona simply because there's more to football than just goals.

The status of the GOAT is not of self declaration, a king who calls himself a king is NOT a king. Messi or Oponunaldo need to win the world cup to be considered GOAT. But if we want to be sincere, looking at overral influence on the pitch...critically examining the roles each player, and what they do with their teams...you would fancy Messi to win it.
