Some pics of COB Semuliki, Beni, DRC, which was attacked on Thursday evening.
What's known so far, pending an official investigation:

1) The attackers wore FARDC uniforms which is how they gained access to the small FARDC base next to the COB;
2) The Tanzos didn't perform the twilight stand-to;
3) The attackers first took out the comms tower and Sector HQ in Beni only raised the alarm 2 hours into the attack, when COB Semuliki missed its scheduled report and couldn't be raised on the net;
4) The FARDC also had a base around 15 km away; it is unclear why they didn't respond when asked to check out why COB Semuliki was radio silent;
5) 2 Rooivalk were despatched but couldn't intervene as the fighting was close-up and there was exceeding danger of blue-on-blue;
6) Someone has been training the ADF as this was their most sophisticated attack with accurate mortar fire, RPGs and machine guns in multiple phases;
7) Someone has also been funding them as RPG launchers and rifles they left behind were brand new;
cool The number of missing is no longer 3, but 1.

RIP to the dead and speedy recovery to the injured.

Yep. With so many attacks over 3 months in that area, that base was criminally left too vulnerable.

Good luck with that in the middle of the jungle. That's why we asked the CSIR to investigate a solution.

I'll say they're not just willing to spend the money. Nigeria did that after series of blue on blue fire.

And you'd be wrong. Google jungle canopy and radio comms.
Or are you referring to handheld radios to co-ordinate with helis? Guys on the ground were Tanzo, with no way to communicate with the Rooivalk, and there was no FAC on the ground. Besides, no one is dropping ordnance when fighting is within 50m. It's called "Danger Close".

Lol I know what I'm talking about. Deep in the jungle, deep forest etc whatever. Our guys are now been able to operate handheld radio.

Let forget about handheld radio. What about a back pack with a separate antennae operating on a very low frequency? Radio relays etc?

My point is there are other options that could have been abducted. At least a backup deep down in the forest.

Handheld radio to communicate with anot.her close by unit. Not a direct communication to the FOB and chill even if it wasn't danger close, how do you differentiate the bad guys from the good?

i can't find any Defensive fighting position,those watch towers are made of iron sheets thus offering no protection ,the thick forest offers an added advantage to an attackers.this peacekeeping missions simply degrade African countries armies to foresee future threats or to adapt to counter them.this is a wakeup call to those countries that have contributed troops to DRC

Zuma in Burundi with Recce protection

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYe2Blxbhxg

I find it very interesting when Statesmen do this. Zuma has the Counter-Assault unit as was as the PPU to call on, both are para-military and both could certainly handle the threats one would likely face in Burundi.
It's determined by the threat assessment. The PPS is a pretty large organisation with for example intelligence officers, so long before there's any boots on the ground there's a substantial advance team which arrives with a technical unit e.g. metal detectors, comms, video surveillance. Then sniffer dogs, just watching that video I can spot 4 PPU vehicles. The Vito would carry the CAT team, but don't assume that every suit is a bodyguard as CAT also wear civvies although they aren't hard to spot (usually tactical boots with formal wear). Remember that the motorcade is in transit protection, so once they disembark they'll already be a team waiting for the principal. Basically imagine the American president travelling, but on a much smaller scale with the same purpose. These teams all in all can number well over 50. Looking at the video JZ is in the X5 and the tailing 7 series is a back up vehicle, both are armored. Also different countries have different protocols for example from the video I can tell that PPS flew their vehicles to Burundi. But if they were going to Britain then the SA embassy would have to supply them with vehicles and the Metropolitan Police would book them firearms and provide an escort. Also if the principal is taking a personal trip then the PPS must provide ALL relevant personnel. I wouldn't know much about SASF though. I'm not in SAPS or a former officer just know someone under PPS protection so now and then I chat to them. Somethings will, admittedly, be ego driven!

radios obey cretin laws of physics. You need the tower so the radio can rely long distance.

Yes I know. I mean communicating with a nearby unit.

You should have at least 3-8km in a jungle with a back pack radio operating on an external antenna.

Sorry at least, you should be able to communicate with a nearby unit.

3 to 8 km range when they 15km from. The nearest freindly base. The distance evolved here are large than you think.

A radio system itself shoukd give you a medium ranger of 3-8km in a jungle/ deep forest.

Include an external antenna designed for such. You'll have a 15km range.

A dp4800/01 will give you a 5-8km in a jungle. After extending the range with an external antenna designed to work under such condition you can have up to 15km.

Using a low Tx/Rx antenna then such is a billion times possible. A research was conducted using radio wave propagation through forests with tree canopy reflection effect by a guy I know shows the dp series itself has a talking range of 23km using an external antenna in a jungle/ forest. Of course the antenna was specially designed.

Now the issue is what jungle was the test done in. Was it the flowing hills and thick jungle of DRC.

2 how much does it cost. You think the DRC has money for nice radios.

You comparing Apples to oranges here. I mean SANDF have Secure SATCOMs for emergency use. But you can't expect the DRC to have that or a company of Tanzania infantry. They probably had long range radio tower and a few short range radios.

Any case communication was only one reason the attack was so deadly.

I would focus more on the fact they never did the morning Stand to has the biggest issue. That shows a lack of care for security.

The base it self is not that big a deal has people think. It surrounded by earth embankment's the watch towers have sand bags in them and if they actually caired about security it would of been sufficient. ADF does not have tanks.

Possible increase the number of radio check inn's to be once a hour. I mean it stand to do hourly rounds in any case.

Yeah. I agree.

But on the issue of the base isn't a big deal, I feel there should always be a normal standard to be maintained by the military even at the lowest unit.

Communication is very important. They knew their weak point, Destroyed their communication tower first and then attack them massively.

About the money, If you need to win the war, why not spend the cash on necccesary equipments than wasting human lives.

Frumentum said something about communicating with the Rooivalk helicopters in which I have a question to ask, isn't there suppose to be a free channel where the Rooivalk can communicate directly with the Rooivalk pilots if it wasn't danger close?

This!
Evening stand-to, by the way. Seeing what time the attack commenced, if they'd done the stand-to, they would not have been caught out as they were.
I disagree on the base. It could've been better prepared for defence. I'll try and find pics of the base 2 years ago when the Moroccans were there, and successfully defended it from an ADF attack from the jungle and by boats from the river. But the ADF then was poorly amed and trained.
As one FARDC officer said after the October attacks:
I have been fighting the ADF here since 2014. But something has happened. They suddenly got a lot stronger.
Yes, hourly radio check in should be the standard, especially for isolated small outposts in hot zones.
Apart from the Tanzanian lapses - which will be addressed; FARDC will simply ignore its problem areas. They've never bothered to investigate where ADF gets new FARDC uniforms, and I'll wager there won't be a convincing explanation why their base 15km away never went to investigate the radio silence from COB Semuliki.

1. That's a really shitty post - I know it's hard to cut back triple-canopy jungle, and that the UN probably isn't to wild on slash and burn, but the could of at least thrown up some sand-bags and put together some decent fighting positions

2. Looks like the ADF is intent on cutting the road to Beni.

With the comms tower gone, their handheld radios can't communicate with the Rooivalk. In such a situation, only way to communicate is via a FAC, which the Tanzos don't have.
