Why Do People Buy Expensive Cars? by Joelete: 11:45am On Dec 16, 2017
I see a lot of people driving expensive cars, yet they live in a one room apartment. That leaves me to wonder "why do they do that?' Can it be attributed to low self esteem? Just curious.

Can you give me an example of expensive cars you see this people in one bedroom apartment driving?

And I hope it's not Toyota camry or Honda Accord.

There are some areas where one bedroom self contain apartment cost up to 1million.
And you don't expect the person occupying it to drive a corolla.

If you don't know, a car is one of the most expensive accessories a person can own.

If I pay 1m for a self contain apartment. I can as well drive a 3m car. The rent will surely finish but the car will stay.

To stand out from others
To show the success rate is not thesame
To brag
To make people jealous
To look fancy
To look rich
To show power and wealth
To be different from others.....
Tland so on
There are more than a thousand reasons why people buy expensive cars..

Mercedes Benz Glk, Toyota Venza, Honda accord 2010 model, Acura ZDX, Toyota Hybrid, honda crosstour etc.
They basically wake up every morning to wash the car like it's the most important asset they own in life, whereas the money used for the purchase of some of these cars could help them start a petty business and even start building houses. Don't you think it's just the prestige and social class and the fact that they want to gain the approval of their peers as being well-off that's driving them to commit to buying such expensive cars?

I absolutely agree with you, I think people do this to portray themselves as being within the highest social class in society whereas in truth, they are struggling to earn a living. Sometimes, it becomes difficult for them to even carry out maintenance for the car and fuel it. It's a sad situation.

Again I think the " I want to be better than my neighbour syndrome' in nigeria is hugely responsible for this expensive cars buying behaviour. What do you think?

This your assumption is biased.
You say you see them waking up to wash this car means you don't even know them personally?
What makes you think they don't have a source of income?
What makes you think they don't have a business?
They have the money to buy the car and also pay their rent. They didn't come for you for help which means they have money to feed.
This your write up sounds more like envy.

And you're definitely not telling the truth about some of those cars you mentioned. Acura Zdx , Glk? Hmmmm.

You don't assume about people's life from afar. Don't say what you don't know.
People live in rented apartments while they have their own houses probably for proximity to work or other reasons.

Nobody will wake up to wash a car every morning. For the car to get dirty everyday that means they drive it to a far place everyday. Which means they actually have a place to go which could be work or where ever.

You sound more like the npf angry .

People are entitled to whatever they want to own.

In the USA there are college students who live with their parents and drive cars worth over $80,000 e.g merecedes E class, Dodge Hellcat , e.t.c
Some people earn 250k per month and they can use 200k to buy a Samsung S8. Different people with different way of life and I feel everyone deserves to be happy. Any one who spends his or her hard earned money on anything deserves it.

The simple thing is to mind your own business and make your money. Whatever thing you use your money for is for yourself and your family.
Good luck.

Lol... am not a member of the NPF, am just someone fascinated by consumption behaviour of people. I am of the opinion that one should purchase something if it is absolutely necessary given the situation one finds his/ herself in. I was in Warri recently, where I went to see a friend and stayed over, and in the area, there were families living in a one room apartment on average, 3 children in the house and a very expensive car is parked outside, don't you think it will be rational to get a bigger apartment for the family than spend huge amount on a car, while the children are literally struggling to feed and attend better schools?

Good point you made here, "everyone deserves to be happy" . I think it all boils down to self fulfillment and actualization, buying expensive things just to help you stay happy and communicate your personality and status to your people. This I believe is a valid point "happiness". I call this material medicine. Lol...

When you have your money.
If you spend it on something you like and someone criticizes you , i know how annoyed you'd respond to them.

Men buy expensive cars in order to appear successful and wealthy. They wish to appear wealthy even if they are completely broke, and paying for that flashy car by installment, BECAUSE they know that women are drawn to the ILLUSION of money, just as easily as they are to REAL wealth, regardless of whether the man they presume to be rich is dinosaur-old and ugly as sin.

Posing in an expensive car is a time-proven means of getting more women to open up their legs for wanton humping by the poseur in the fine car, and for that reason ALONE, many a horn-dog will STARVE himself if need be, so as to be able to afford the car that he needs as a vehicle of deception whose primary purpose is to display status, rather than to serve as practical transportation.

If you only drive a palm-wine tapper's unfairly used rusty bicycle, it will be INFINITELY more problematic for you to find women who will gobble and mount your knob, than would be the case if you tooled around town in a Ferrari 450, like our man Dino, that treasury looter extraordinaire, of the "Ajekun Iya" fame.

Fundamentally, this makes a lot of sense from the Nigerian context, and this truly drives people to purchasing things that ordinarily, is beyond their financial capabilities. Being happy and showing off I would say is probably the reason for their decision.

In Nnewi I see a lot of people riding "ladies motorcycle", yet they live in big apartments. That leaves me to wonder "why do they do that?' Can it be attributed to high self esteem? Just curious.

It's a matter of CHOICE.

But if you Really want to know the reasons behind the choice, then the onus lies on you to meet the people involved and get first hand info. Except those on nairaland who fit your description and willingly reply you, your curiosity may not be satisfied.

That mass mental illness that compels the poor to pose as the rich is particularly prevalent in the USA's black population.

In the USA, a steady job held for a few years is all that is required for even "financially challenged" people with poor credit records, to "buy" virtually any car with a 4-year payment plan, simply by signing up to purchase a car by monthly installment, after making a small down payment, or NO down payment at all. In fact, it is RARE to see anyone in the USA who regularly buys cars by making a full cash payment to cover the entire cost of the vehicle at the time of purchase, as is the norm in Nigeria.

Normally, car buyers make payments every month, known in the USA as the "car note", on any car that is bought used or brand new. As a result, many blacks and other broke Americans go into debt WAY over their heads, by purchasing flashy cars whose monthly payments will ultimately prove to be beyond the means of the buyer to pay.

This installment payment trap thus lures generations of poor, ghetto-dwelling black Americans into deep, deep debt, which in turn has resulted in the establishment of another major industry called "Repossessions", that is centered around the stealthy, commando-style grabbing back of cars whose owners can no longer make their monthly payments.

So, while it is not unusual to see a poor janitor, garbage truck driver, parking lot attendant or burger-stand minimum-wage laborer driving a brand new luxury sports car in a bid to pose as a rich man on the streets of America, it is equally common for such cars to be snatched by "The Repo Man" and his trusty tow-truck, literally at any time, day or night, once that "car note" payment has been recorded as late or missing, for just ONE month.

America is truly a debtors paradise, that in the end turns out to be a debtor's hell, for many a low-income poseur who is deluded enough to imagine that driving a flashy car is their ticket out of poverty, in addition to its role as a decoy used to gain honey-hole access with materialistic and gullible women seeking a free ride in exchange for timed humping sessions atop that pay-per-view, high-mileage poon-tang.

I came late to class sha,
what we actually see in life is not necessarily how it actually is, most times we see things the way WE are.

the above statement got to me quite late but it has shaped my mentality for good, I got to understand that only the judge of a matter can actually say this is wrong or right hence some legal systems adopt the jury system.

@ op, u r seeing it as wrong because of ur mentality and philosophy, and as u can see a lot of US don't see it that way.

irrespective of the above, for one to make sound inference to a particular topic, u must have concrete facts readily available for scrutiny.

that person driving that 5m car, living in a 300k apartment might actually be much more comfortable than that other guy living in a 15m building with a 1m ride.... I've met people in both climates, several times.
reasons for their attitudes range from priorities to self centeredness to low/high self esteem even down to pride and definition of certain elements like..... assets.... some people see cars as assets, like someone pointed above, some certain jobs need such rides.

some even have such assets but prefer to live a low key life...... that nnewi own is not just in nnewi, Onitsha too...... they wear short knickers and drive lady bike yet their houses tell of their success stories of which they will never admit to.

don't judge a book by its cover again, that cover might be borrowed sef.
I hope this little post of mine quenches ur curiosity.
u seem like a conservative guy sha, its good to be conservative sha but @ the end........ uwa wu ofu mbia.....

Op, I think I understand where you are coming from. More like, certain things should take priority over others in our lives. In this case, using the story about the Warri family you shared as example above. Getting a bigger house for the family ought to be the logical thing the man should do rather than an expensive car.

You see op, there's no way you'll understand the motivation behind such decisions if you don't first understand the concept of INDIVIDUALITY

According to an online dictionary,
Individuality means the particular character, or aggregate of qualities, that distinguishes one person or thing from others; sole and personal nature

So until we're all able to understand the concept of individuality in its true sense, we'll keep wondering why certain people do things differently from us.

Exactly, that's the point. I do think certain things should be prioritised above others. Of a truth, most people love cars, but there should be a limit one should spend acquiring luxury items owing to one's circumstances. In my opinion, I'll do buy a camry 2.2 and move my family to a better apartment.

Because it boost and increases your ego, status and personality in the society

But in Nigeria expensive cars are bought because most of the owners didn't work for the money...either stolen or ill gotten
While others buy such cars to oppress people and massage their low self esteemed life
