You don't have to pay the 20k damages or any amount outside your rent.

I will advice you send text or Chat the agent , so you can always have evidence to rely on.

Quit Notice is nothing bro. That you are served one and taking to court doesn't mean you will be evicted.

Stay in your apartment and ignore them. Just send a text that their rent is ready anytime they want it.

You can even contact my signature if need be

Did you sign any agreement about paying 20k every year for damages?

Don't pay, if he decide to give you quit notice, you will have 6 month na before leaving.

It's better to move than stay with a troublesome landlord.

Dicksonpal:
Good morning nairaland
Please, this is not a counter thread to yesterday's....

I stay in a self con, just because I felt like I needed to be a man of own and not stay in my fathers house any longer. So I got this house last year December, all packages was paid for including damages and likes. I was told light was stable, water runs into the house, pump fully working and other amenities.

Fast forward to after I moved in, non of this was working, for a whole year it was a low current, I fetch water from the well, in fact nothing was working. After four months in the house I noticed the land lord was living close by, this got to me cause I never wanted a monitoring sprit as a landlord. The man is so naive and wicked, he creates problem with his tenants so he can them out after a year for refreshed packages. Anytime he wants to try that with me am always calm,so he doesn't have a reason to misbehave.

After 6 months of no light he brought the bill and asked us to pay, I was reluctant cus I felt at least we should pay half the money since there had been no light. The next thing was to cut all light entering each rooms, promising reconnectection after payment. I made the payment cause 6k is not the problem.

With all these observations I called the agent and told him I hope he won't give me too quit notice after a year, the same way he does to others, he told me blatantly that "shey be e se landlord ( u dint offend him na"wink. I was like so quit notice is the reward for annoying the landlord. I was like no shaking, I go show una.

Just a month ago the light was fully repaired, not very high current, but at least TV is working and fan.

My rent is due, i was asked to pay the new rent, wanted to wire the money when the agent called me and told me I was to pay extra 20k for damages, I was like, what the flying Bleep!!!, does one pay damages twice, I told him he should point out what I damaged, he said that's how the landlord wants his own... I felt bad and betrayed, used and dumped. After a whole year of running on generating set. This is a movement driving towards very obvious quit notice. Of which me sef no be butter but I like respecting people.

Dear nairalanders, how do you guys think I can go about it, 20k makes a difference in the economy oo.

Lalasticl.ala, help me ask well meaning Nigerians

You are not yet man enough to stay on your own! Go back to your parents house. angry

Haba... You guys can rant on the social media but cannot deal with a landlord that is clearly trampling on your right... Please just leave the house and get a better one.. Infact l am really ...
Re: How Do I Deal With My Landlord? by papae1(m): 5:18pm On Dec 17, 2017
Your landlord an agent are very wicked n evil... The reason they don't want tenants to stay more than one year is to enable them (agent n landlord) charge new tenants agent fee n other utility charges....
That's why they're asking you to pay 20k....
Usually the agent gains tremendously when tenants rotates each year.
I'll advice you to look for another house with functional light n steady water supply.

Ask for 6 months quit notice. Use the 6 months to raise money for a new place and move out.
Re: How Do I Deal With My Landlord? by Noloss(f): 5:20pm On Dec 17, 2017
Well I am not a lawyer but I think lawyers in the house can prove me wrong and shed more lights. If u signed an agreement before entering the house, u should not be paying damages every year and even the money u paid for damages should be refunded provided u don't damage anything when packing out. Now if they insist u park out you have right to stay without pay for 3months from the day you r given quit notice. Staying with landlords could be annoying atimes.

It seem you are the gentleman fela was talking about in his song. who gentleman eppp? Remove your sokoto and show him some craze. Bring some bad boys to smoke indian hemp in his house for like everyday and let him smell it. Next time he comes with the payment for damages, look him in the eye and tell him to "Bleep OFF".

When your house rent expires, tell him you will pay him but dont have the money yet. postpone the payment till about 4 months into the new year. By then he will know you are not a gentleman.

Op is not ripe to stay on his own, he should move back in with his parent. angry

You have no problem, pay your normal rentage and ingore the fitious damages, wait for him to react,as per the light he is not the supplier and he had no,l repeat, he has no right to demand for light bill payment, let your area disco handle that..if he make noise tell him to approach court..l bet you are going to stay 24 month free..teach him a better lesson..

So many wicked and cultist landlords in that axis of the country...though they are every where but that side own ..no get part 2. I hope the house is not a 'scorpion' house..alias scorpilolo.....there are many scorpion house there.....only the landlord and his family prospers while the tenants do not progress....you need prayers o. ...as far as you live in his house...just pay the money and move on with your life..making trouble with those people is just sheer waste of time. ...

I won't forget my experience in the house of one wicked landlord in Omole...hotel bus stop area...

The only day the baba smile with you is the day ..you pay him his rent...if you buy property ..na wahala..

But thankGod for today ...

As for the light issue....you can park out on the second thought to an area with better light availability ....then as for the damages....na hungry landlord. ...na their way....increasing rent before the current payment expires....

to the op

please start to look for a suitable accomodation elsewhere

I"ve got to ask... why the landlord wants fresh pple every year aside a marginal rent increase if there's no underlying sinister development

burning down the property/ destroying parts/ non-payment of rent is not a responsible nor mature way of handling things

Karma can be a biaaatcch, remember
moreso very quickly

Nairalanders have no issue wit this.the case settle itself.u said u already played for all these before packing in.and from all I know.these are refunded when u want to pack out and nothing is damaged.since u have ur receipts. Stood ur ground and follow him where ever he want it
Re: How Do I Deal With My Landlord? by Medunah: 5:58pm On Dec 17, 2017
Dicksonpal, don't renew ur rent, stay for as long as six months without paying a dime, then move out. He can't do nothing. Infact, u av have the right to stay 6 more months after quit notice. That's d best way to teach the man a lesson.

And pls, make sure ur landlord is not living with you in the next house u move to.
So, start looking for somewhere else while u enjoy ur rent free period smiley

It doesn't make sense to remain there. Start looking for another, let them issue you the quit notice. You kuku are a yearly paying tenant, that translates into 6months freebies. It is well.

Why do you want to continue in fear of the known and unknown? Start looking for a new place, let him take you to court and give you a quit notice then let the court case drag for months before the eventually verdict that will give you extra 6-12 months without rent to move out. The sweetest part is that you are not obligated to pay a penny while the whole process is ongoing. Free housing for you for like a year(give or take). That will teach him to respect his tenants. Your name Dicksonpal is strange sha cheesy
Oga, madam. If you xdrag it to court,
it may take months B4 the case is settled. But once it is settled he must pay the difference. Cause he was living in the house. And he didn't pack out or something. As long as he lives he will pay the difference for the months he spent. Simple. Better ask ur lawyer wella
Re: How Do I Deal With My Landlord? by Nobody: 6:24pm On Dec 17, 2017
Oga, better don't listed to all this people saying u have 6 more months oo. Don't even try it.... You cannot stay in some1 house and not pay. It is never done. You must pay the once you've stayed. If you decide to owe him more than 6 months he may decide to use police. Or use his lawyer. They will give you quit notice. And he may not post it on your door and claimed they gave it to you. And they will invite you to court and you will miss it. And the judge will other the believe to take your goods to the court untill you pay all, or they will sale your property right there in the court. I'm a landlord don't try nonsense ooo
