I am Married to a Lady from Mbano and i was given two lists on that faithful day. We were busy chatting and laughing over some plates of Akpu/Village soup,Palm wine/Ugba and finally Rice and stew. I must confess it was fun. When the people realize you are not from the tribe,the list seems very tough but even at that if you can go there with a good SPOKESPERSON that understands their tradition and you have won the hearts of your In-laws the whole process is just a Walk-over like mine. Bride price n other items paid for a bride in Nigeria and other cultural practices should be looked into. The cost expended on purchasing these items are exorbitant nowadays when compared to the good old days when things were cheap and affordable.

To start with, it is a Nigerian (and for the most part, African) culture but I don't really like the generalisation. I know, of a truth, that in some culture, the amount paid are usually returned, at least my pops in-law did. While some group of people demand an arm and a leg, others ask for inconsequential amounts because they consider it as symbolic than actual sale of their child.
More so, it also depends on whoever you are marrying; I hear people complain about Imo state (fyi, I'm from Ebonyi) but my brother married a lady from Imo state and he didn't pay a dime because the lady insisted she was not for sale and her mother backed her up. At the end of it all, when some of the "elders" insisted, the lady's mother told them she has collected it and that put paid to the issue.
Besides that, some Asian countries too ask for dowry, either to marry their sons or daughters, so why is theirs not considered scam? Most everything we do in Africa be painted bad?
