Chinua Achebe writes beer-parlour stories. There's nothing intellectually stimulating in the tales he weaves. He wrote stories what are better read with a combination of palm wine and peppersoup.

On the other hand, go and read 'The Interpreters' by Wole Soyinka. If you read that story without food in your stomach, you can run mad.

There's no point crying that everyone victimises you if you don't measure up to standards. He had multiple opportunities to win the Nobel but failed.

Failed or denied the prize because of his sympathy for the Biafra cause? What other books of Soyinka can you use to compare Things fall apart, arrow of God and No longer at ease? People should really stop bringing Chinua Achebe into Nobel Prize matter. Even though he was good, he simply was not good enough for a Nobel Prize. Chinua Achebe was a story teller, one who was fiercely committed to promoting and propagating the interest, myth and culture of his clan.

Wole Soyinka on the other hand is on another level, on a level belonging to gods among men who call themselves writers. He creates his own art. He is unsparing when unleashing his brilliance and skillfulness... He tells stories. He writes plays... When it comes to poetry he becomes a lens for magnifying thoughts that grow bigger with the looking.

As Nigerians we naturally find it tricky separating the political realities of both men from their art... But we have to do just that. And when you eventually get to the point when you see both men as writers, then you will understand how insulting it is to think Soyinka's works should be, in debates, brought down to the level when we compare them with Achebes.

After 1986 when Soyinka won the Nobel Prize for literature, there were so many other opportunities for Achebe to have won a Nobel Prize too...But he never was considered good enough for it.

Didn't Wole Soyinka also support Biafra such that the was even imprisoned? Imagine the ridiculous statement that Achebe was denied a Nobel because he supported Biafra.
